  • 13 people want to be a woman.

  • i just love how her eyes r sooooooo red waaaaaaaaaaaaah i want mines like that :D

  • lol that settles it the first ppl on earth were Chinese

  • @Roully09 Failed the first ppl on earth were japanese XDD

  • i bet if she made a video for kremlin dusk, it'd be epic.

  • i heard this in a steve and barry's store

  • this video is bad ass. love it...

  • i love this. cant believe i just found it. loved both songs for kingdom hearts

  • this vid and music is kinda weird, i cant say if i like it or not...

  • hmmm the mv is pretty interesting but i don't like the song :(

  • Utada Would Be A Cute Guy, And I'm A Guy

    Not Even Gay LoL

  • She is talking about not understanding how each other feels in a relationship, and it slowly breaking down, NOT having a sex-change

  • Basically, we all complain that we don't understand how each other feels. It's like having a partner of the opposite sex. Have you never thought - "If I was the same sex as you, would I understand you more?" - it's quite simple, and we've all thought it once or twice but in different ways. The video is about her being a robot purely because it emphasises the idea that it's hard to understand someone who is something you're not, as woman and men are completely different

  • and what she means is she wants to be human not a robot or other words controled

  • she lloks like brenda song

  • All of her videos are so unique. x]

  • I agree n.n though I heard that she made this song after her and her husband got divorced

  • The song was recorded 4 years before she divorced her husband.

  • she's not talking abt having a sex change

she wants to know how it is to be a man, to know how they feel,, blah blah,, i think this song is for her ex hubby

  • @patheticbaka

yup, they got a divorce reason being they 'couldn't depend on each other for emotional support.' It's about how she wanted to understand him better and had a better relationship but they can't since they're different; shes not a man (like he is).

    >Misconception on her part though, not all men are like *that<

    *implication

  • @patheticbaka it is i think...

  • @patheticbaka Sorry to replay to this it's over two years, but no. The video is about how she, as a machine, sees how much humans have archived and she wants to become human, but they default it to "man" since we all know that it refers to mankind.

  • Maybe it's her take on sexism? In the video they show all these things like these male athletes, first men on the moon blah blah blah And then the ending is kinda like a spin of adam and eve, eve being created for adam. She's saying that women come second in society and she couldn't help the way she was born?

  • I think this song is really cool cuz people can take it in so many different ways. I personally plan to get a sex change so y know i feel like i can relate its just cool tho =]

  • I think the song is about not being treated with respect because she's a woman. She wishes that she was a man so she could be treated with respect. ^_^ Good luck on your sex change. :D

  • Also, the song is about her relationship with her husband. (According to some interviews/Utada's website). She wants to be a man so she can understand him better.

  • They really put a lot of work into this mv. Expensive, expensive, all that labor in the computer workings.

  • I want to say the meaning has something to do with the fact men can't seem to get past the fact that we are women.

As in, they only see the differences between us.

I think she's saying that if she was a man then maybe things wouldn't be so difficult in the sense of gender the way it is now.

  • i luved the album exodus...this song was one of the best songs on it!! (apart from animato ...durrr!) wooo ! the vids also amazing :) yay 4 hikki !! <3

  • this vid is great but weird

    tks for posting

  • Dude.. I have fallen in love with this song. It has so much meaning, and the vid? I love the ending. It's a different take on Adam and Eve.. with the complicated machines being God.. and.. so much more meaning that I can't even put it to words. Simply AMAZING!

  • This video is ... wow! but I just can't seem to figure out why she wants to be a man?

  • she makes me want to be a man

    cuzz shes mad pretty

  • Yes... the title of the song may be a bit disturbing (personally I reckon it should of been called something different)But when you actually understand the song it actually really makes sense! At first when I didn't get the meaning of this song I didnt really like it but now that I get it I really like it it's one of my favourite Exodus songs along with "Devil Inside," "Exodus '04," "Animato," Kremlin Dusk," &"About Me."This song really has a deep meaning!Well done Hikaru Utada, you're awesome!

  • i love this mix of the song (even better then the real song)

    YAY TO UTADA!!

it sux that her husband (ex) and her divorced not so long ago TTnTT

  • ???

    This is the real song?

    lmao

  • like the song...vid is WIERD

  • I think that's the style of Utada's videos. Most of them are...weird, as in very usual from what you'd expect of music videos. Sakura Drops was weird for me too, but I like the song.

  • um anyone have the mp3??? its really hard to find.....

  • Do you have the download of this =)?

  • the cigarette stuff seems personal, so i'd guess its about her husband. awesome song!

  • *sniff* she and her husband split in May.

  • lol have you seen him?

    ....i believe love is blind

but hes like 15 years older than her lol

    seriously

  • You don't believe love is blind then. Who cares how older he is than her? Age does not matter.

  • YES IT DOES

40 yr old guys with 5 yr old girls is FAR FROM NOT MATTERING

  • he was only 15 years older than her, how the heck does your example work? o.O

  • oh i didnt realize we were talkin bout utada hikaru. so he was fifteen when she was a baby?? hmmmmm....

  • ::sigh:: Um, please look at the comment I was responding to. Thanks. Utada and her ex-husband were ADULTS. It doesn't matter how older her husband was.

  • truce, cause i have no idea wat u talkin bout =D

  • The age doesn't reaally matter..

At first it bothered me too but I realized as long as they were truly in love, it's fine. (:

  • I think its very clear, she´s talking about her exhusband, not the human race. And when she says "dont light that cigarrete" maybe she refers when in a discution with her ex, he smoke to avoid the conversation, and that bother her very much! Love u hikki! ure the man!!!

  • im not sure what the message hikki was trying to say in this song but i think she might've wanted to be a man so she could express her love and feelings and know what it's like to be a human. to know that feeling of love that a human can feel. and maybe too feel the freedom of a human too instead of having to be a machine. maybe thats why. im not sure but it's just an idea

  • The end what the male robot puls his rib out... is a part out of the bible... The robot at 2:44 is supposed to be Adam, the first man... and then he pull out his rib... and out of this rib Eve comes, the first woman...

Well its the meaning of a part of the song...

  • At 1:36 you see a snake... in the bible there is a snake that persuades Eve to eat an apple... she does what the snake says and sins enter the world...

and yet again it could be part of a meaning^^

  • that's good idea. maybe it was that, maybe it wasnt. i hope we can find the right one.

  • And there where she sings about paby please, don't light that sigarette... That could have something to do with eve eating the apple of knowledge of good and evil... she was fobidden to eat from the fruits -- maybe the lighting of a siggarette was forbidden...

    in their paradise... of machines...

  • that's true. or maybe it's like lighting the cigarette is taking a risk..........

  • Ye, we'll probably never know for sure

  • Oh and wiki says, The song describes how she could better understand her husband.

  • yea we prob not gonna find out. but that goes for a bunch of different songs.

  • I want this one as mpc file

  • *Mp3 file

  • i love this video and song!! Utada is simply amazing!!!! while watching this i was thinking how awesome of a movie this would be! kinda like the matrix...

  • Strange in a very cool way! I love Kremlin Dusk though- it's my favorite song by her!=)

  • Her music is truly unique.

  • Utada-san always has the most interesting unique videos!

  • You are amazing a different type of music but altogether one of the best real musicians out theres (voice is an instrument.)

Btw if you actually listen to the lyrics in the song its a metaphor, she doesnt want to be a man, most relationships are based off a patriarcy and she wishes to have that freedom.

She would like to have the free will of man, culture does change perspectives and well yep... "arguments that have no meaning" Its true especially in a divorce so everyones right!

  • dumb ass. These are utada hikaru fans. not like p0rn0s

  • shes ammmmmazing!! luv u hikki! <3

  • I love it.

(artgeek it's not because she sings in english than it's american pop sound lol)

  • Utada is.. simply amazing..

  • i interpreted the song as a message...she and her boyfriend are have communication probloms and if she were a man it would be easier for them to talk to each other...

  • you guys are all wrong. What she meant by "man" is mankind, human, not male. watch the video.

  • It's about her wanting to better understand her husband ._o

  • you don't need to give him negative points for that.

  • u are totally right, is about being a human but is too about to could see a man perspective for a woman, if u see... the whole Exodus Cd is about sexual and pair issues.... expepting ones like Kremlin Dusk wich is my favourite one, but the video is about ur idea of makind

  • The video is a different take on the meaning of the song. The SONG is about her relationship with her husband.

  • speaially when she sais i want to tell u sum thin but i cant!!!

  • Yeah, its about man kind and the mind of men, not saying she wants to be a man because she loves a woman...Utada's not like that. She's straight!Hikki's da bomb!

  • would it really make that dferent if she was a lesbian or a trans or sum thin...

  • I really preferit when she sings in japanese. There's a difference in the way j-pop and american pop sound and I despise Pop but I love J-pp. Really the music industry in America is making her into a pop star, when I think her voice is really better suited for j-pop

  • well that was.... weird...

  • fuck yes.

  • her videos aren't the videos that you mostly see around youtube

  • Well i like it.

  • Reminds me of a Bjork video. Hmmm...

  • "You Make Me Want to Be a Man - To me it was pretty simple and straight-forward. I was trying to deal with my husband,~~~ I felt like if I could be a man, I could understand him more, in some ways, so I wanted to understand him, and I thought, 'I wish I were a man!'" - Utada Hikaru

I'm sure she summed up her own song nicely. (made shorter for comment.

  • they got divorced recently.

i wonder what he looks like.

    but yeah..

i bet there are plently of men that are happy to know she's single now.

  • lol, I do know how he looks like, and he looks like sasuke but like in 30s, what i mean by that is imagine a 30 year old sasuke with short hair, and that's kind of how he looks like.. and I'm sure she'll be happy off.

  • liek me rofl

  • actually youre all wrong...the song is actually about her not being able to understand men soo she wants to be one so she can understand them....duh

hahah im jk jk....i dont really know but thats what i got from it

  • Not a huge fan of the song but I love the video.

  • she is SO AMAZING!!!!!! just a pitty she hasnt released anything in the UK yet :(

  • You have AMY WINEHOUSE! She's great!

  • who the hell wants to be a man?

lol no offence to those who are men...

  • Utada is a Japanese citz now she was both till 22 but japanese law states you can be both till 22 she took japn becasue she spends more time here and she is bigger here this song is to her ex hubby yh its hard for japanese women in japan...Ohh wicked thing!

  • she wouldnt be particularly used to that because she is from the US

  • i must say i was readin the comments ppl posted THSI IS ABOUT HER DIVORCE.. not hwo she wants to be a man bc they have more power in japan lol.. retarded

  • no, I think its a love story about a robot/anamatron thing that fell in love with someone and wants to become a man (person) so she can live with them

  • im tellin u what it IS about not what i think.. it IS abotu her divorce

  • ohhhhh now i get it lol

  • uh...your wrong!!!! it is NOT about her divorce, because if you read about her album and her song, you'd understand!!! Its about HER WANTING TO BE A MAN TO UNDERSTAND THEM [something like that] if you go on answers dot com, look up the song

  • go on her firgin web site .. its about her divorce

  • check out my new video : )

  • I love Utada and I hope she is really famous in the US whenever she decides to put out another album in America. I hope she does it soon, too!

  • I love this song so much!! I really don't understand why people aren't getting the meaning of this song. Listen to the lyrics. The meaning is pretty much smacking you in the face it's so obvious. Unless you're a little kid, you should know what she's trying to say. Use your brain people!!!

  • sorry i didn't mean to post my comment twice lol!!

  • Dude she wrote this song in honor of her ex-hubby..and wanting to understand him..how you guys come up with these ideas are like...woah.

  • Which goes with what I said... in a lot of Asian cultures, women are portrayed as submissive and inferior to men. She wrote this song in honor of her ex-hubby... to understand where he comes from. Because as a male, he doesn't have to live submissively or second in line. And this isn't an idea I just came up with. I'm Asian and come from a traditional Asian family. It's typical living.

  • In a lot of Asian cultures, women are portrayed as submissive and inferior to men. And I think a lot of what this song is saying is she wishes she could be a man or of equal levels of a man's playing field. I don't think she wrote this song in a homosexual context. And the line "Don't light that cigarette" is a metaphor of... don't turn your head to me or pretend you can't hear me.

  • thank you..... finally a comment with real meaning....

  • AquaGrunty200 you do not understand music at all do you?

What Mohama said is correct "it's actually about her wanting to understand her husband better. And the only way she thinks this can happen is if she was a man."

I know i am correct because she said it when she was being interviewed that she wish she could understand men better.

  • i have felt that way before... "oh things would be easier if i were a man!" i'm glad utada gets me at least! stupid boys with their crazy ways of thinking. >.< haha

  • That's what I thought when I first heard this video but it's actually about her wanting to understand her husband better. And the only way she thinks this can happen is if she was a man.

  • Um...I think this is a really great song. Awesome. Really. I...uh...just want to know what she means by "You Make Me Want to be a Man." Anyone know what she means?

  • I think what's meant by "You Make Me Want to be a Man" is that she doesn't understand this person, so she wishes she was a man so she could better understand this person's feelings.

    Or something like that.=P

  • I was just wondering if it was that or if she might be singing to a girl. Anyone know what Utada-san's orientation is?

  • AquaGrunty200, I have no idea if Utada is 100% straight or not, but I think you raised an interesting point because as a homosexual individual I didn't see any contradiction in the lyrics when I watched the video again assuming she was singing to another girl, except the reference to smoking cigarrettes cus often times smoking cigarrettes can emphasize one's masculinity while it is not usually considered or supposed to indicate one's femininity.

  • I don't think she's singing to a woman. The song is talking about how she doesn't understand someone, and this makes her want to be a man. If she was singing to a woman, it wouldn't make sense because generally women tend to understand each other's feelings. There's also a reference to Adam and Eve, where Eve is created from Adam's rib bone. She is portrayed as Eve, therefore she'd want to become a man to understand Adam...

    That's what I'm getting from it. o.O

  • um xKairax, AquaGrunty200, matzmt, she's singing to her (now ex) husband lol i can give you the link to the interview as proof if you want ^_^ its in english too, but she wrote the song during a time when she and her husband were having problems, she felt that maybe she could understand him better if SHE was a man lol that is the meaning behind the song and like i said, I can give u her interview as proof ^-^

  • I believe you, but I'd love to see the interviews anyway. could you send them to me?

  • sorry! i forgot to check for replies lol i'll send it to you if you haven't seen it yet lol

  • sorry it took so long i forget to check for replies lol sure i'll send it ^-^

  • thank you so much! I am so obsessed over her<3

  • I sent the interview to you and i'm just checking to make sure ya got it ^-^

  • why are people arguing over if this song sucks or not? x__x its a matter of opinion~~

i, for one, love it :3~~!

  • Is this song about a woman being abused by her husband? I'm not completely sure.

  • no no this song was her way of expressing what she was going through with her husband at the time, she felt it was a gender issue, meaning they couldn't understand each other well because he's a man and she's a woman and she felt that maybe she could understand him better if she was a man lol did i make it clear? i tend to be a bit wordy lol!!

  • amazing video and my favourite utada's song. i don't like typical j-music, but Utada is so original... and she really can speak english. not many japanese singers do it so well.

  • that's actually because she's bilingual. she grew up in new york, which is why she's fluent in english. :)

  • even if in this video shes a robot, shes hawt!!

  • This video has a message.

  • I believe the live version is much better!

  • I like how its soo fake ..it just exceeds reality and thats trail blazing I love her crazy videos like this...like..Sakura drops..I lived for it!

  • I think Utada is inspiring, but this is just too fake :(

  • really fake and crazy right? XD i know

  • what do you mean by fake?

  • how? It looks very impressive too me. At least she can make music! Utada's very original. She'll rise to the top. They probably had to squeez in a lot of technical looking scenes for this video.

  • This is an interesting song and video! I like it! :)

  • i feel it wierd. dont like this pv at all.

  • the part where the man takes one of his ribs and there's a woman created around it THAT'S SO COOL! like adam and eve

  • cooooooooooooooool

  • I love the video and the song. I can really relate to what she is saying.

  • where can you get a copy of this vid?

  • this is my fav song off of exodus

  • Ever such a slight DnB influence in tis. Love it. Different, pretty and catchy.

  • i LOVVVVEE utada but this is just okward

  • well, I know why she's one of the richest ppl in Japan. Her music is so genuin, so ppl love it and buy it. love her!

  • Maybe the best song in exodus and great music video for it. So much better than 'easy breezy'

  • it's really cool :) I like the over all effect it gives, its something totally creative but very sensable, and the lyrics do make sense for those who listen :P its a positive attribute, and its just unique for a music video of todays genre

  • i think the song is great. she can express so much in a song. the vidoe is amazing. its so unique. i dont h#think any1 else would dare to do a song like this

  • The music is almost bad, and the video is too weird. I only like the singing and lyrics.

  • hey athenashadowraven this ur fellow utada online peeps who hang around the song challenge thread ^_^. I clicked to watch this pv and saw ur user. XD thanks for the up

  • I love how Utada has so much ability... This songs so emotive, the video so creative, I cant help but love it. Its so there.... so full of anything and everything...

It describes my relationships perfectly. And I like the Adam and Eve connect she has.

    Go, Utada, Go!

  • this was a single before exodus came out.

  • whoa...i can relate to this song...scary

  • I liked it..

  • I dont think its a scary video, in fact I love it! Its unique and creative, things you dont see that often in music anymore.

  • The video makes sense. Great song and yes people she said that she wanted to understand her husband because she doesn't understand him.

  • i got scared..lol that video clip is scary..awks why cant utada make nice sweet songs =(

  • I love the song and video, she put a nice message in there for women, (we wish we could understand things from a man's point of view -.-)

  • maybe so, but the song is still terrible. No wonder she failed the US.

  • The song is not terrible. She has a unique sound, and I think people failed to actually listen to what she had to say. She is an extremely successful artist, she's sold over 40 million copies of her albums worldwide.

That's an accomplishment to think about.

I'd much rather listen to this than rap and hip hop which has taken over the music industry and the interest of most young people.

  • This is an amazing song from an amazing album!! I think that with some publicity this album could be really sucessful. It's so fresh and original sounding, even now!

I don't know about the US but something like this could do really well in the UK. We like original music here :)

  • for half a million the video coulda been better.

for all her experience of the music industry u think she woulda executed her western releases better... obviously not.

  • she makes me want to taste a gun

  • thanks for posting this, its a great video and song, the lyrics really could be much better. its such a difficult message she is trying to articulate... the way she accomplishes it is too too awkward, but she is still experimenting. wish they had released hotel lobby as a single instead, much better lyrics.

  • this is fuckin scary

  • Shaolen, I agree with you. She said that in her interview with I belive it was MTV (i might be wrong) but it was in the Netherlands (that im sure) And its because she, like Shaolen said,

'wants to see from a mans point of view'

b/c she doesn't understand her husband...really how is that hard to understand?

Great song, vid a bit odd but still
