  • Justin I would like to say a personal "thank you" to you for all the time and effort you put into passing on your expert knowledge. I'm beginning to get somewhere now! Dr Paul UK.

  • so how do i play the riff in the dannon yogurt commercial at the beginning?

  • my fingers hurt!

yeah? well now your back's gonna hurt cuz you just pulled double landscaping duty!

  • I got 34 changes in my first attempt! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!

  • YOU ARE THE BEST !!!

    LOVE YOUR LESSONS <3

  • I muted this video and used it as a timer..

  • 42 decent onces and about 50 but like 8 were just awful lol, mate your a sick teacher

  • this reminds me of when i was in elementary school we did these things called mad minutes. we turned over a piece of paper and did as many math problems on the paper in a minute. if we got so many we move up to harder problems XD

  • Dude,my fingers are killing me after changing D-A and D-E. But results: 30 and 34,I'm satisfied,for now :)

    Thanks a lot man :)

  • Learn guitar from the Geico gecko

  • 31 first go but i have been practicing each day one vidio at a time so it wasnt to bad, im loving the vidios they really help thanks

  • I've been practicing this for about 45 minutes(ish) now and I'm already seeing an awesome improvement. I went from 8/min on the first try (like you said in the video) and am now up to an average of 38/min on 5 different combinations of 2 chords. This is helping me a lot! thanks :D I usually just give up on this because practicing is so boring and frustrating sometimes, but if I feel like I've accomplished something then it gives me more motivation to keep going! Good luck beginners! :)

  • @CallMeDilbert Dude I know exactly how you feel. I keep trying to practice, but I fail so much at certain exercises that I just give up. I've been that way for one year and still can't play any song.

Now I finally found an exercise that motivates me. Yeah!

  • Justin, I just discovered your lessons yesterday, and plan on ordering your lessons and first book of songs. But I have a quick question regarding chord changes. My pinkie finger keeps straightening out as I go from A to D. Should I try to change that or not worry about it? Thank you

  • yeah....i did 25 of them !! Whhooop Whhoop!

  • Sorry for the comment flood but 90 in one minute, second try, I'ma drop that count down to 85 since 2-4 of em I kinda hosed it, but this time using that anchor finger you mentioned in the last video and hitting both D and A chords properly. All with downstrokes, and for the guy asking about callouses, it takes between a week and a half to two months playing at least an hour a day for callouses but the more you play, the faster it happens. If it hurts, good! Don't stop. Hardest part of learning.

  • Also not to be a buzzkill but after 45 seconds (timed the video at 5:05, started at 5:08 leaving 1 minute till the video was over) I lost count around 80-84 between D and A chords. But it should also be known I bar the A, bad habit I need to get out of since it kills your high E string from fitting into the chord.

  • really incredible how much more this motivates me to practice the chord changes! hah seriously great, wasnt expecting it

  • two days ago i didnt know a single chord, now im getting there! thanks justin:)xx

  • my fingers hurt... when will i start to develop a strong callous to make playing hurt less?

  • I tried to find how to play 115 by Elena Seigman and this popped up

  • Cheers Justin....I am loving these lessons. I have tried many online lessons but your's actually allows a begginer like me to understand the basics. ! Can't wait to learn more.

  • I'm sorry but u just missed the point was to practice how to speed and be able to move your fingers quickly. Justin you are the best

  • i made 21 changes yaaya

  • Thanks Justin!, this lesson helped me change chords 90 times in one minute!!!

  • hey justin man feels like i know u from theses videos great job quick question how long should we be practicing and get it to move on to the next practice 1 week 2 days?

  • I had 130 switches in 1 minute, my hand hurts like HELL now. xD

  • Finally got it. D to A - 32, A to E 35, E to D 33. These are complete changes per minute. I have Guitar Rig, so i used this for recording one minute of me changing the chords. After that i turned playback on and made a count of all changes. It's now time to practice rhythm and my first songs!

  • @mcRYSHER

    how much trys?

i needed 30 trys each, so 90x 1 minute total to be able to play a cicle more often than 30x a minute.

Is that good or am I learning very slow?

  • @Juergen6 I'm not sure if i understood you...I've practiced about a month, so i speed up my changes up to 30 per minute for each one chord-change. You don't have to count your "trys".. Just learn it. Don't hurry. Remember that you have to play it comfortable to yourself. It doesn't matter if you learn it slow of fast. You have to play it GOOD.

  • thx you got me motivated to learn guitar.

  • I really respect Justin's lessons! But.. Justin saying that if you playing chords not clear enough - it's ok, main thing is speed here. But my opinion is that it's far better to practice changing these chords slowly. Try to spent a few days slowly changing between chords, concentrate on making them sound perfect. Soon you will find that your fingers are naturally starting to move faster. So, speed will come naturally don't try to force it. Otherwise you'll play fast but with lots of mistakes.

  • @mcRYSHER I've helped hundreds, maybe thousands with this and I'm telling you for sure, that if you work on doing these fast - AS WELL as spending time getting them perfect and clear - you end up with them fast AND clear. It works man!!!

  • @JustinSandercoe Ok, sir, i will. Thank you for answering. I will definately make a donation to your site! Your lessons are the best on market! And you are a great teacher sir! Lots of respect!!

  • @JustinSandercoe Its Realy watever way Works Best For You! :)

  • @JustinSandercoe Been playing for almost 6 years and unfortunately most of that was wasted on generic metal. I want to develop my own style so I'm committing chords and scales to memory as a stepping stone. Your videos are dead on, man. But by practicing them slowly at first, the finger movement and positions of these chords is committed to finger memory. Slowly first to memorize the movement of the fingers, then fast to build speed. Can't play fast what you don't know by heart.

  • @JustinSandercoe Just wanted to clarify on what mcRYSHER was saying, I still think this exercise is a great idea and your lessons are very helpful. After 6 years I still haven't learned my chords, lmao. Kinda embarassing but hey, gimme a few days, already got finger strength and a good bit of speed down pat so should be pretty simple if I can just replace bad habits with proper ones. =P Not disagreeing with your method, just stating a rule of thumb that helps loads for faster exercises.

  • @mcRYSHER Shut the fuck up dude. I spent one year and a half doing as you said in your comment, and still I have gaps while playing. My rhythm sucks because of this gaps between chords. I'm doing as Justin said, and it's starting to work. It feels like months of inutile practice are over. Thank you Justin.

  • First time ever found myself learnin guitar Its all bcoz of u, u make it simple n easy to understand..thanx justin

  • msg from Korea. you are such a great instructor!! amazing!!

  • Counting up once per chord change, not once every time I got back to D, I did 51 changes in a minute :D On my first try!

  • man i did 41 .. is that good???

  • @MichaelJhoan in my opinion that is very very good, i can only do 6! So if i could do 35 than, I would be happy : D

  • I just picked up my first guitar (first time ever touching one) on Sunday, 4 day's later following your program to the letter I'm getting chord changes in the 30's thanks to you. At this pace I'll be knocking out Stevie Ray Vaughn tunes in a matter of months lol. Thanks for the priceless help!!!

  • grady sizemore?!

  • my guitar keeps making this like thunking/ not holding out all the strings in a chord noise, what am i doing wrong??

  • i did 35 in my first 1 min changes:D is that good?

  • @MichaelJhoan it's not if you think it's good, but if you can do better

if you think you can do better, then keep going

then after doing the best you could do, after practicing so hard, then i'll believe you did good (:

  • 168.3k views and only 1 dislike. Keep doing what your doing Justin!

  • I LOVE YOU! no homo

  • ok i get it, ill be back when ill be good at it, see you in 2012

  • ok you taught kids, so you are older than kirk hammet o.0 ?

  • Very helpful and clear!!

    Greetings from France!

  • OMG U are amazin!! I almost went and spent money on online teachers I didnt even like and then I found you and I felt like an angel had been watching over me you are amazing the things I learned in 1 hr alone!!! pllllzzzzz keep it up I definitely willl donate u deserve it 1000 times!!!! thank you thank you thank you

ps: typing this coment was extremely painful my fingers r so sore haha but u are worth it! ^_^

  • my fingers are sore and i've noticed they're getting pretty hard on the tips..is that normal?

  • @celinioidd Better than normal; that's exactly what you want! That hardness on your fingers are called callouses, and it is absolutely imperative that you get these callouses. They will be sore for a while -- this is perfectly normal and will last approximately a few weeks -- but when those callouses have fully developed, the pain will go away, and you'll find yourself playing better than ever before. Keep going, keep practicing! :D

  • @HealyHQ yay!thankyou.I have been practicing a lot and i've noticed the pain is not as intense anymore:)))))))

  • you spin me round round, justin. Like a damn record, round round. Seriously though, you rules and are awesome, and in contrary, suck. Thank You! all of your instruction is SO appreciated and useful and I am very grateful.

Sidenote: If I was a hot woman with extremely hot breasts, I would volunteer to be your love-slave. or i could just wear a wig..

  • I'm glad I came across your videos because I was starting to get frustrated and I thought maybe not everyone can learn to play guitar?? Thanks to you I have found new hope and motivation to keep trying. You're an awesome teacher! Thank you

  • A great teacher. Pace is perfect (not too fast/slow) and he appreciates beginners' problems. So very helpful - thanks Justin.

  • wind instrument? twice as difficult

  • Justin thank you so much! Youre the best

  • Justin, your fab, and make this very interesting to learn. many thanks

  • heeeeloo Justin here.....what a lejj!

  • thx mate u help a lot ;D

  • Awesome

  • thanks justin, you're awesome. u should sell DVDs world wide in different languages of ur lessons. you are an awesome teacher, awesome beyond words to describe.

  • O_o lol oh wow I guess I don't suck as bad as I thought. I got up to 21 A-D, using A as my main count. Total confidence booster!

  • Guys how does your 3rd finger move? When I move from A or E to D, I can't press strings by 2nd and 3rd finger at a same time, at first I press 2nd, only then 3rd is on the right place. M 3rd finger is DEAD(

  • this is awesome.

    I can do 82 D - A

    76 D - E

    over 80 (always lose count) A - E

after 1 week and a half from getting my guitar.(fast not perfect right ?)

  • When I'm writing this it's been exactly a week since I started playing guitar.

I can safely say that you, Justin, is the sole reason I'm making progress. Me and my friend started at the same time. After about 3 days I could do the A E and D chords fairly well, and I'm just now starting with the Chord Change... while my friend was still struggling with his D chord. I recommended him to follow your course, and now we are even steps again. Hoping for 1 c c /sec =D

All I can say is thank you.

  • 1 c.c./sec

  • Thank you so much

  • dude thank you sooo much, really appreciate it

  • man i just love u....u r the best teacher.

  • Best guitar teacher I've find on youtube so far.

  • Thank you so much Justin. This really helped me.

  • " That's the whole picture dudes" LMAO....found it funny Idk why

  • hahah i lost count at like 50 seconds :(

  • cooooooooooooool :)

  • ouch, my fingers are on fire. like the saying goes, no pain no gain :) thanks again justin, a great exercise to do.

  • 9 is good? I had 21 lol. (Although he was probably only counting every 2 changes, so I guess thats 10.5... lol)

  • just started learning to [try] play... & find myself to be very fortunate to have discovered your programme!!! NO other on-line instructor's methodology is NEARLY as effective as your approach, training curriculum or exercise techniques... Thank you, Sensei!!

  • @dugongyogurt

right on, bump this comment to top.

Theres always someone who is negative, but being a noob to guitar, i think Justin is the most thorough, shows techniques to makes it easier to learn, and explains the why's WHEN i run into troubles.

Learning an instrument is priceless(i play piano), and having a source like Justin is beyond cool.

Thanks Justin, my anxieties are gone...and i just started, lol.

  • i got 18 switching between all 3 =]

  • I've just now been tracking my progress. 26 for D-A 16 for D-E 21 for A-E. that really stinks

  • I know young people catch on faster than adults, but is an average of 27 per set (AD, AE, and DE) normal for a first try? O_o

  • uhh can you please make a vid about how to get your pic uot of your acoustic guitar i keep dropping mine in :(

  • someone help, when i change chords and strum i get a buzz from the chord i just played? would it be from sliding my finger across? thanks!

  • you should be able to do like well 60 changes in a few weeks, it just takes practice, Of course they won't be perfect, some may be buzzy but still

  • lol i got 11:P

  • These lessons are easy to follow and so helpful. Thank you Justin!

  • got 1,000 changes and i onli bought i guitar ther now... hell ya :P

  • should i focus on which strings i strum? cause i find that using up alot of time

  • this is so good, i got 50 D/A, 52 A/E and 50 D/E. i only started learning the guitar yesterday!

  • Got 56 on D to A, 41 on D to E and 40 on A - E. Gotta keep practicing and hit 60+ with all.

  • i got 20 in the cycle version

  • I do 89

  • When he said 60 in aminute I was just like D: NOOOO. I can't : P.

  • Haha, I bet you can do it now, 2 months later, eh? =)

  • I havnt picked up my guitar due to School work and exams and coursework.. So no.

Im gutar is fairly out of tune aswell, Though I think the tunes are intune qwith themselves, bnut sounds SO differnt to when he strums : |.

  • OK, well did you know you can google "online tuner" and click on the first link and that's an easy way to tune your git?

I hope you get back to it, bye! =)

  • i did 9 changes between d and a in 1 min thnx i will keep practising :)

  • 11 changes in one min.

    ...

  • this really works! in 4 mins i did 28 the first time, then 37 then 45... and the kept getting cleaner and cleaner too:) thanx bud!

  • I'm on my 5th day and I managed about 11 (sets of two, 22 individual chords). They really didn't sound the best, but I think if I do this every day a few times it will get better.

  • Yeah arrggh my poor fingers:) All for the greater good though, Really lucky to have found this guy.

  • very good idea - i 'll try this method - thx justin

  • That's so not true. I think they're NOT boring at all! I started playing the guitar just a few days ago and it actually helps! If you think u can do better, go on and prove it instead of giving these sorts of comments!

  • @yourpalcliffy Well these lessons actually helped me alot and I'm not crying like a girl! (though I am one) U know what, if u have a comment just keep it to yourself.

    Good luck with your guitar.

  • BOOO HOOO..... lol

love the passion.. to all d ppl on youtube who beleive in perfect world and perfect teachers like justin and wudnt change it no matter what,,, all the best to you too...

  • Wow thanks justin you're a great teacher

  • I always have a problem with "lingering" or "inbetween" notes.

  • arrrghh my poor fingers :(

  • Ok, I've prepared with 5 chilled homebrews, the AF105 is tuned.... and the strap locks are secured 8-) B.R.B

  • Ok, to be fair, I was noodlling this last night until my middle finger tip went numb but... Results are (depends which counting way you use) D-A 20 or 10, D-E 24-12 and A-E 26-13. No prizes for guessing that my fat fingers prefer E to D. Thanks Justin for presenting this stuff in a way that makes sense to me (and many others). 5 stars.

  • This is really a good tecnique, some chords gets mute every now and again, but in 3 tries on each swap(a-d, e-d, a-e etc) I saw improvement by each new attempt. A couple more days and I'll be ready for the next step I think.

  • this technique really works thanxs justin

  • thank you so much!

you make learning fun and easy :D

i did the 1 minute challenge thing and between D and A i got 22 in a minute... did i do something wrong? cause i was playing the chords right...

    anyways thank you !

  • 60 per minute its impossible Justin! :D

    I just cannntttt

  • thats a really good idea bro..

  • awesome

  • Muse inspires

  • justin ur a legend. love the common touch and tricks and tips.

  • for this are we supposed to look at our fretboard or stare at something else?

  • this guy is a genius

  • Você está me inspirando a continuar minhas aulas de violão.. continue assim... é a melhor vídeo-aula de violão da internet.

(You motive me to continue my guitar lessons... continue this work... is the better guitar video-lesson of internet.)

  • Hey, really good video!

I just entered a guitar competition, please check out my guitar solo. Thanks!

  • this helped me with my jazz chord changes. you can do this with any number of combination of chords. for a tougher challenge, find an object to stare at while doing these exercises, a poster, a wall, anything.

  • if I practice chord changes really slow but for half hour or an hour, is that good too??

  • Yeah..

As long as you make sure, you are getting all your fingers on the chord spot on..

Any practice is good as long as you are concentrating on getting things right..

But the excercise Justin is talking about in this video is excellent for building smooth chord changes between two chords, so you should really give it a try..

  • just keep trying and b motivated always that " i HAVE to get better " and ull learn quickly. did it forme =p m on power chords now wit alternate stumming! in one month.

  • Thank you SteveRayRules and pakimetalhed !

When it´s time to make the chord changes at normal speed? After one week? two weeks?

  • just keep goin... try to be faster everytime u pick ut up as justin says. and there isnt ANY time limit for learning =) some learn fast some slow... so no tension! rock on!

  • cool :D

  • guitar hero inspired me too to play real guitar! xD i have played for a year and 4 months now :)

  • same thing exactly for me too :D

  • at least u are playin guitar... not like people who jst rave over guitar hero an nt nowin wat they're on about

  • i think when u are playing guitar hero u understand the feeling of playing guitar and u understand that guitar hero is a lie(its enjoyable and a good game but its a lie)so u wanted to play guitar.what are u playing now electro guitar?

  • yes, indeed ! :D And yea, I play eletric guitar, but I also own one acoustic guitar

  • metallica inspired me to play guitar

  • Foo Fighters inspired me :)

  • this guy called Landon austin! check his "waiting" song out. its AWESOME!

  • me too

  • Um... what inspired me... I guess I wanted to play guitar ever since I held the one my aunt used to have.

She doesn't play but I remember when I was a teenager, she had a fender (I still don't know why she had it or where she got it from) but I would always pick it up and play with it (even though I didn't know what I was doing.)

But, I think if I had to pick a song that really, really made me want to play... it would have to be Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.

  • Do you not have any friends to talk to?

  • Lol, um, who was your comment directed towards, ablueroom?

  • This helped me a lot, thanks man :-).

  • YEAH 120.

  • damn hd looks good..

  • great idea

  • neet, i have trouble with chord changes, but this helped. and so did quiting guitar hero for real guitar.

  • did guitar hero inspired you to play guitar ?

  • Did to me.. something like a year ago :)

  • yeah. thats why i started. but now that im obsessed with real guitar. when i get frustrated i turn to guitar hero because im good at it compared to real guitar.

  • Lies. Don't be stupid, You're currently normal, It's not to late. Don't hate on guitar Hero for not being real guitar.

  • I use the timer on my iPhone too, xD

  • wasn't this vid here before?

  • Thanks again!
