Justin I would like to say a personal "thank you" to you for all the time and effort you put into passing on your expert knowledge. I'm beginning to get somewhere now! Dr Paul UK.
this reminds me of when i was in elementary school we did these things called mad minutes. we turned over a piece of paper and did as many math problems on the paper in a minute. if we got so many we move up to harder problems XD
I've been practicing this for about 45 minutes(ish) now and I'm already seeing an awesome improvement. I went from 8/min on the first try (like you said in the video) and am now up to an average of 38/min on 5 different combinations of 2 chords. This is helping me a lot! thanks :D I usually just give up on this because practicing is so boring and frustrating sometimes, but if I feel like I've accomplished something then it gives me more motivation to keep going! Good luck beginners! :)
@CallMeDilbert Dude I know exactly how you feel. I keep trying to practice, but I fail so much at certain exercises that I just give up. I've been that way for one year and still can't play any song.
Now I finally found an exercise that motivates me. Yeah!
Justin, I just discovered your lessons yesterday, and plan on ordering your lessons and first book of songs. But I have a quick question regarding chord changes. My pinkie finger keeps straightening out as I go from A to D. Should I try to change that or not worry about it? Thank you
Sorry for the comment flood but 90 in one minute, second try, I'ma drop that count down to 85 since 2-4 of em I kinda hosed it, but this time using that anchor finger you mentioned in the last video and hitting both D and A chords properly. All with downstrokes, and for the guy asking about callouses, it takes between a week and a half to two months playing at least an hour a day for callouses but the more you play, the faster it happens. If it hurts, good! Don't stop. Hardest part of learning.
Also not to be a buzzkill but after 45 seconds (timed the video at 5:05, started at 5:08 leaving 1 minute till the video was over) I lost count around 80-84 between D and A chords. But it should also be known I bar the A, bad habit I need to get out of since it kills your high E string from fitting into the chord.
Cheers Justin....I am loving these lessons. I have tried many online lessons but your's actually allows a begginer like me to understand the basics. ! Can't wait to learn more.
hey justin man feels like i know u from theses videos great job quick question how long should we be practicing and get it to move on to the next practice 1 week 2 days?
Finally got it. D to A - 32, A to E 35, E to D 33. These are complete changes per minute. I have Guitar Rig, so i used this for recording one minute of me changing the chords. After that i turned playback on and made a count of all changes. It's now time to practice rhythm and my first songs!
@Juergen6 I'm not sure if i understood you...I've practiced about a month, so i speed up my changes up to 30 per minute for each one chord-change. You don't have to count your "trys".. Just learn it. Don't hurry. Remember that you have to play it comfortable to yourself. It doesn't matter if you learn it slow of fast. You have to play it GOOD.
I really respect Justin's lessons! But.. Justin saying that if you playing chords not clear enough - it's ok, main thing is speed here. But my opinion is that it's far better to practice changing these chords slowly. Try to spent a few days slowly changing between chords, concentrate on making them sound perfect. Soon you will find that your fingers are naturally starting to move faster. So, speed will come naturally don't try to force it. Otherwise you'll play fast but with lots of mistakes.
@mcRYSHER I've helped hundreds, maybe thousands with this and I'm telling you for sure, that if you work on doing these fast - AS WELL as spending time getting them perfect and clear - you end up with them fast AND clear. It works man!!!
@JustinSandercoe Ok, sir, i will. Thank you for answering. I will definately make a donation to your site! Your lessons are the best on market! And you are a great teacher sir! Lots of respect!!
@JustinSandercoe Been playing for almost 6 years and unfortunately most of that was wasted on generic metal. I want to develop my own style so I'm committing chords and scales to memory as a stepping stone. Your videos are dead on, man. But by practicing them slowly at first, the finger movement and positions of these chords is committed to finger memory. Slowly first to memorize the movement of the fingers, then fast to build speed. Can't play fast what you don't know by heart.
@JustinSandercoe Just wanted to clarify on what mcRYSHER was saying, I still think this exercise is a great idea and your lessons are very helpful. After 6 years I still haven't learned my chords, lmao. Kinda embarassing but hey, gimme a few days, already got finger strength and a good bit of speed down pat so should be pretty simple if I can just replace bad habits with proper ones. =P Not disagreeing with your method, just stating a rule of thumb that helps loads for faster exercises.
@mcRYSHER Shut the fuck up dude. I spent one year and a half doing as you said in your comment, and still I have gaps while playing. My rhythm sucks because of this gaps between chords. I'm doing as Justin said, and it's starting to work. It feels like months of inutile practice are over. Thank you Justin.
I just picked up my first guitar (first time ever touching one) on Sunday, 4 day's later following your program to the letter I'm getting chord changes in the 30's thanks to you. At this pace I'll be knocking out Stevie Ray Vaughn tunes in a matter of months lol. Thanks for the priceless help!!!
OMG U are amazin!! I almost went and spent money on online teachers I didnt even like and then I found you and I felt like an angel had been watching over me you are amazing the things I learned in 1 hr alone!!! pllllzzzzz keep it up I definitely willl donate u deserve it 1000 times!!!! thank you thank you thank you
ps: typing this coment was extremely painful my fingers r so sore haha but u are worth it! ^_^
@celinioidd Better than normal; that's exactly what you want! That hardness on your fingers are called callouses, and it is absolutely imperative that you get these callouses. They will be sore for a while -- this is perfectly normal and will last approximately a few weeks -- but when those callouses have fully developed, the pain will go away, and you'll find yourself playing better than ever before. Keep going, keep practicing! :D
you spin me round round, justin. Like a damn record, round round. Seriously though, you rules and are awesome, and in contrary, suck. Thank You! all of your instruction is SO appreciated and useful and I am very grateful.
Sidenote: If I was a hot woman with extremely hot breasts, I would volunteer to be your love-slave. or i could just wear a wig..
I'm glad I came across your videos because I was starting to get frustrated and I thought maybe not everyone can learn to play guitar?? Thanks to you I have found new hope and motivation to keep trying. You're an awesome teacher! Thank you
thanks justin, you're awesome. u should sell DVDs world wide in different languages of ur lessons. you are an awesome teacher, awesome beyond words to describe.
Guys how does your 3rd finger move? When I move from A or E to D, I can't press strings by 2nd and 3rd finger at a same time, at first I press 2nd, only then 3rd is on the right place. M 3rd finger is DEAD(
When I'm writing this it's been exactly a week since I started playing guitar.
I can safely say that you, Justin, is the sole reason I'm making progress. Me and my friend started at the same time. After about 3 days I could do the A E and D chords fairly well, and I'm just now starting with the Chord Change... while my friend was still struggling with his D chord. I recommended him to follow your course, and now we are even steps again. Hoping for 1 c c /sec =D
just started learning to [try] play... & find myself to be very fortunate to have discovered your programme!!! NO other on-line instructor's methodology is NEARLY as effective as your approach, training curriculum or exercise techniques... Thank you, Sensei!!
Theres always someone who is negative, but being a noob to guitar, i think Justin is the most thorough, shows techniques to makes it easier to learn, and explains the why's WHEN i run into troubles.
Learning an instrument is priceless(i play piano), and having a source like Justin is beyond cool.
Thanks Justin, my anxieties are gone...and i just started, lol.
I'm on my 5th day and I managed about 11 (sets of two, 22 individual chords). They really didn't sound the best, but I think if I do this every day a few times it will get better.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
these lessons are boring and ull feel bored and quit soon. so every now and then u learn new stuff search for a song tutorial and play it even if its not good it will keep u motivated
That's so not true. I think they're NOT boring at all! I started playing the guitar just a few days ago and it actually helps! If you think u can do better, go on and prove it instead of giving these sorts of comments!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
how many lessons hav u done??
im doin this since last 3 months after quittin 3 times in last 2 yrs.....
either ur a beginner or ur rare... nothin against justin's lessons.. its just a suggestion to be motivated and play without quittin... Take it or leave it... dont cry like a girl... maybe u r one.. all the best and enjoy...
@yourpalcliffy Well these lessons actually helped me alot and I'm not crying like a girl! (though I am one) U know what, if u have a comment just keep it to yourself.
love the passion.. to all d ppl on youtube who beleive in perfect world and perfect teachers like justin and wudnt change it no matter what,,, all the best to you too...
Ok, to be fair, I was noodlling this last night until my middle finger tip went numb but... Results are (depends which counting way you use) D-A 20 or 10, D-E 24-12 and A-E 26-13. No prizes for guessing that my fat fingers prefer E to D. Thanks Justin for presenting this stuff in a way that makes sense to me (and many others). 5 stars.
This is really a good tecnique, some chords gets mute every now and again, but in 3 tries on each swap(a-d, e-d, a-e etc) I saw improvement by each new attempt. A couple more days and I'll be ready for the next step I think.
this helped me with my jazz chord changes. you can do this with any number of combination of chords. for a tougher challenge, find an object to stare at while doing these exercises, a poster, a wall, anything.
As long as you make sure, you are getting all your fingers on the chord spot on..
Any practice is good as long as you are concentrating on getting things right..
But the excercise Justin is talking about in this video is excellent for building smooth chord changes between two chords, so you should really give it a try..
just keep trying and b motivated always that " i HAVE to get better " and ull learn quickly. did it forme =p m on power chords now wit alternate stumming! in one month.
just keep goin... try to be faster everytime u pick ut up as justin says. and there isnt ANY time limit for learning =) some learn fast some slow... so no tension! rock on!
i think when u are playing guitar hero u understand the feeling of playing guitar and u understand that guitar hero is a lie(its enjoyable and a good game but its a lie)so u wanted to play guitar.what are u playing now electro guitar?
Um... what inspired me... I guess I wanted to play guitar ever since I held the one my aunt used to have.
She doesn't play but I remember when I was a teenager, she had a fender (I still don't know why she had it or where she got it from) but I would always pick it up and play with it (even though I didn't know what I was doing.)
But, I think if I had to pick a song that really, really made me want to play... it would have to be Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.
yeah. thats why i started. but now that im obsessed with real guitar. when i get frustrated i turn to guitar hero because im good at it compared to real guitar.
Justin I would like to say a personal "thank you" to you for all the time and effort you put into passing on your expert knowledge. I'm beginning to get somewhere now! Dr Paul UK.

I'm on my 5th day and I managed about 11 (sets of two, 22 individual chords). They really didn't sound the best, but I think if I do this every day a few times it will get better.

these lessons are boring and ull feel bored and quit soon. so every now and then u learn new stuff search for a song tutorial and play it even if its not good it will keep u motivated
yourpalcliffy 2 years ago
That's so not true. I think they're NOT boring at all! I started playing the guitar just a few days ago and it actually helps! If you think u can do better, go on and prove it instead of giving these sorts of comments!

5 stars.
YaniT991 2 years ago
This is really a good tecnique, some chords gets mute every now and again, but in 3 tries on each swap(a-d, e-d, a-e etc) I saw improvement by each new attempt. A couple more days and I'll be ready for the next step I think.

this technique really works thanxs justin

first time i tried it i got 123 per minute counting 1 for every change
laxtunas 2 years ago
this helped me with my jazz chord changes. you can do this with any number of combination of chords. for a tougher challenge, find an object to stare at while doing these exercises, a poster, a wall, anything.
spidrmage 2 years ago
if I practice chord changes really slow but for half hour or an hour, is that good too??
gforce08666 2 years ago
Yeah..
As long as you make sure, you are getting all your fingers on the chord spot on..
Any practice is good as long as you are concentrating on getting things right..
But the excercise Justin is talking about in this video is excellent for building smooth chord changes between two chords, so you should really give it a try..

gforce08666 2 years ago

Um... what inspired me...
