Jan 19, 1931: Bing Crosby records "I Surrender Dear" for Victor w/the Gus Arnheim band; the song is heard by CBS radio pres & Bing lands a solo radio show. The song also goes on to chart for 10 weeks, topping off at #3.
Sometimes what you do best can be remembered by when you did it. In my opinion, this was Bing at his finest, just before he became Hollywood. His vocal range and expression during that period really make you wonder what happened afterwards. In case you didn't know, he made movies, sold orange juice and had books written about him by his children. It doesn't matter. These early recordings remind you of what he was capable of.
I can just see all the great stars dancing to this at the Grove. Wonderful tune, lovely lyrics, and so nicely done- a great representation of that "wonderful" decade, the 1930's . despite the crushing depression, the decade I've always thought was the most incredible for music, movies, invention, classic and classy people, when there was such a thing as class. Seems rare now.
...and Barris was one of Bing's fellow "Rhythm Boys" when they sang with Paul Whiteman, striking out on their own in 1930, until Bing decided to become a solo performer...
Oh my fucking god i love so much the sound of the gramophone.
