  • He sounds like and looks a lot like Sacha Boren Cohen.

  • I wish they would have tested him on resiting the number pi.... Put him on the spot

  • if this interests anyone at all, you should read his autobiography "Born on a Blue Day". Letterman didnt really touch on his ability to learn languages increadibly fast or his struggles as a child. Daniel is such an increadible man

  • he sounds like iphone4 speaking.

  • duude, I'd so like to meet him, I have synesthesia too.. except when I tell people the colors of their names/numbers they just think I'm crazy. haha.

  • after readin "Moonwalking with Einstein" by Joshua Foer, I really don't like him... like at all. well except the fact that he's gay :)

  • "I love pie" jesus christ letterman you fucking monkey

  • So many teeth

  • i wonder if Letterman realised he was gay when he said that...

  • X-men IRL

  • Fuck this guy is cool!

  • Daniel seems like a great guy - I like him!

  • 117? Letterman is Master Chief!

  • look at my face. I ain't bovvered....

  • i did the math its a friday

  • @cjace32 - I looked at an online calendar and he's right about both the Thursday and the Saturday.

  • @gekritzl lol cool, im just kidding thats awesome

  • Comment removed

  • This seems incredibly under-researched, could have been a much better interview if letterman had prepared even a little bit

  • hihi i can make you go crazy

  • very talented man......i like him

  • THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING. HE DOES NOT HAVE ASD. HE REALLY GIVES PPLE THIS MISCONCEPTION ABOUT WHAT AUTISM REALLY IS. 99.9% OF PPLE WITH AUTISM DON'T BEHAVE THIS WAY. FIGURE THAT NUMBER OUT!

  • @TheAndrewAlice You're absolutely correct. A fter watching this gentleman interact with Mr Letterman, I could not help but notice how comfortable and composed he was - particularly being on national television and in front of a massive crowd. I cannot help but notice how fluent and natural his muscular movements are and how comfortable his eye contact appears. My sister has Aspergers and I am sure she would give anything in the world to be able to interact with humans the way that he does.

  • @TheAndrewAlice Who are you to judge about that? A mental condition is not just on one side of the scale for each sympton. There are a lot of different shapings of this disease!

  • I forgot the most important point. An illness is not named after the shaping of the conditions in the majority of the cases.

  • I THOUGHT THIS GUY WAS COOL UNTIL HE STARTED ACTING LIKE FAGG

  • over 22,500 places... that's your cue to applaud you goons. also, letterman is a joke.

  • hiya tell me your fantasies

  • I appreciate the replies to my comments. I am still perplexed by this story. I do not have my PhD, but I am a clinician with a graduate degree. For my thesis, I wrote on the subject of non-verbal learning disorder. Although not a formal DSM diagnosis, it is very similar to Aspergers. I've known children and adults with AS, and this guy is not at all similar. He is so comfortable, socially appropriate, and seems to "get" all of the non-verbal, and hidden social cues of this conversation....a

  • I'd love to talk to Daniel for like... five minutes. I recently finished reading his book and it was so touching; I could relate to him on several things... not the autism (as far as I know) but other things like being an outsider and stuff... he's very inspiring.

  • wait is his birthday january 31st? my sister has epilepsy and she was born on that day too...

  • how can anyone dislike this? It was charming and so interesting.

  • He does not really seem to have Aspergers. He's very verbal, has appropriate social reciprocity, and seems to be quite "normal".

  • @mybeautifulbailey He's come a long way.

  • @mybeautifulbailey He's one of the lucky people who are highly-functioning autistic. But in his book, "Born on a Blue Day", he expresses all his struggle. It's a great memoir, you should definitely read it.

  • LOL on PI and PIE!

  • Comment removed

  • I love the way he speaks. could listen to this all day. I ve always loved british but this voice just has something. sooo soothing.

  • He has aspergers, has mastered eye contact but still has motor tics, and has a rather monotonous voice. But still is brilliant

  • I`m not a savant and I can calculate the day of the week of any century in under 5 seconds... first u got to learn the trick which takes you some months to master.

  • awe, he's so adorable

  • "I like bananas". Haha so true, cause compared to Tammet, David Letterman and most of us regular people, we are monkeys.

  • i have Asperger syndrome.

  • @tocrazy4cabbage My friend told me he has it too a couple days ago... :)

  • 117 ... spartan

  • He could be anything but not autistic.

  • no problem with eye contact whatsoever. lots of people have bad social skills, it doesn't mean he's autistic, regardless of a diagnosis

  • also i can bend to your needs, just talk to me and tell me what you want

  • letterman is arrogant with mr Tammet , poor guy

  • @MsChamallow Agreed

  • lol..very good....

  • hahah, well you've got my number!

  • Dave was waiting to get the day of the week, at 7:40, from his Director. lol

  • Hey me and Daniel have the same birthday

  • Is he the voice actor of the geico gekko?

  • Daniel Tammet was to humble to give an honest reaction on Letterman's calculating the weekday that Tammet was born on, at the end. He WAS born on a wednesday, but this is stated on the first page in Tammet's book (and even on the cover), which Letterman must have seen/read.

  • thubms up if you checked your calendars after watching this

  • @RandomRayProduction1 You can calculate it really fast though... Just take the year and divide by four = A Remainder = B find the month corresponding to the month value = C J F M A M J J A S O N D 0 3 4 0 2 5 0 3 6 1 4 6 the date and call it D Century and divide by four... Remainders = 0 1 2 3 E Values are = 6 4 2 0 now add all A B C D and E together... and divide by 7... whatever remainder you get corresponds to the day of the week starting with Sun = 0 and ending with Sat = 6!
  • @MumblingMickey for some reason youtube didn't put in carriage returns so that went a bit haywire... but even the average person can calculate it mentally for any date in history...or the future in a little under 10 seconds with practice.

  • They hardly even touched what this man can do!

  • Also look into a thing called "trauma based mind control." When a person, especially at a very young age, is constantly traumatised and comes very close to death then they end up getting a photographic memory. He even says half way through this interview that at age 4 during an epilepsy fit that he came very close to death and almost died.

  • im thinking what number i look like

  • I like that April 12th 2012 is a thursday, he prolly talked to Kim Peek before the show lmao

  • Why do people assume everything Letterman says is hilarious, laughing on cue? "I like bananas." Yes, that is incredibly gut-bustingly hysterical.

  • @TheFlacidFlamingo I'm supposing that they're literally laughing on a given cue because I find none of it funny.

  • @TheFlacidFlamingo

It's not as much about being genuinely funny but being an entertainer and including some of the interesting information in your program. Can you imagine this type of a program without laugh on cue? well that would be increasingly boring . It's like watching a movie without a soundtrack (it might be interesting but it's much better with music.... so basically u need an appropriate background noise >_____<)

  • @TheFlacidFlamingo when he said that it was random.. saying something randomly at a serious moment could possibly be hysterical to some people.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheFlacidFlamingo 1. It's such a random part of Daniel's story to comment on... 2. His delivery of sarcasm and dead-pan flows out of like water. If you ever get a chance you should hear some interviews where Dave is the interviewee, he's very witty. It becomes so clear how he managed to get his job.

  • letterman is an ignorant piece of shit.

  • @786myfist I agree to a certain extent but what do you expect he's a comedian trying to converse with someone far more intelligent. They are both on two completely different wavelengths. Dave is there for comedic value and "brain man", is just a spectacle for observation or for the sake of entertainment. I think it's ridiculous that he continues to interrupt him for a few laughs but the majority of americans don't watch late night television for educational reasons.

  • Fank you!

He's so sweet, seems really nice and warm personality... which is interesting for an autistic savant. Makes him even more unique.

  • @hugrunj He is very humble.

  • read his book juss finished and had too see this interview...my brother smells like death itsl\elf took a poop in his mouth

  • fuckin david letterman just constantly interupting him, god i hate that douche bag

  • Love watching Daniel. He is actually pretty funny and has great wit. Would love to meet him.

  • LOL Hey baby, you look like a 117.

  • moonwalking with einstein...

  • dude. It's almost like... for some of us... the idea takes on a three or four dimensional expression... fascinating...

  • Comment removed

  • @itsguido

wait.. oh i get it! good one!

  • what a weak handshake. interesting guy though

  • I thought that Dave has a child with autism ?

    I could b wrong .

  • let him fuck so we can have more smarty pants

  • @frisko129 That's actually a good idea! lool!!

  • @frisko129 He doesn't want to fuck ladies and make babies. Daniel Tammet is a homosexual.

  • @JohnnyKubark that doesnt add up

  • @frisko129 Why doesn't it add up?

  • @JohnnyKubark i think my son nos you so im going to make it simple god gave women the glory hole so you CAN PUT YOUR DICK IN THEM the end

  • @frisko129 What are you talking about? Your son knows me? Who is your son?

Anyway, Daniel Tammet is a homosexual, he has no desire to have sex with women. I don't care what you think your "God" wants or likes. Besides, there is no God.

  • @JohnnyKubark my son is josh, theres no god and gay critters in natures forest are considered retarded in my book (not the bible)

  • join the us we have the white bitches

  • You can't express Pi as a fraction? 22/7. Howzat?

  • @Nautilus1972 Well, it's not Pi

  • @Nautilus1972 22/7 is not the exact fraction of Pi. The more precise Pi value is closely related to 335/113 and many more other fractions, it is usually expressed as a number between 223/71 and 220/70.

  • @Nautilus1972 2/10. you are retarded.

  • "David Letterman (27.04.2005)" Wednesday.

  • pie = 3,14 lol

  • what does Tanmment see during an orgasm?

  • @SlumberCloud pi, duh.

  • we can without a doubt to conclude letterman as a republic man

  • I love this man. Hes amazing.

  • Letterman has never looked dumber..

  • This borders on mistreatment. Tammet is so prodigious that to do parlor tricks on American television is painful to watch.

  • @opptynox It's Letterman, not University of Penn what do you expect? This is a popular show for the masses. Its not painful, I'm sure he enjoyed his time.

  • @opptynox He knows what he's doing, and he's promoting to get phat cash.

    Cry more.

  • I like this Daniel. Such a nice man. :)

  • hey I was taser last night, I hope I become a savant!

  • this guy didnt do anything that would help people all over the world, only genius I know was Nikola Tesla and this guy doesnt come near when it comes to intelligence and brain power

  • @kizaru333 If you watch the documentary they talk about how he may be the link needed to explore new areas in the brain and how they work. They also say that since he is one of the only savants that can express what he feels and how he calculates these extensive formulas/equations. This show only shows the superficial side of being a savant and Letterman addresses him lightly opposed to scientist that are intrigued by him.

  • @kizaru333 You're right! Why didn't Letterman invite Tesla?!

  • @Waranoa Tesla died many yrs ago.

  • woah, hes got synesthesia too! well that explains it!

wow only about 25 savants in the world

  • i like bannannas

  • @darkstar1345a can't spell bananas though.

  • @jareid2507

what a really negative person you must be .

  • They've calculated pi to 5,000,000,000,000 digits. If MY calculation is correct, it would take Daniel 129,722 years to recite it all!

  • i tink he is bullshiting the lack of social abiliity

  • haha "It's not you're type of pie, it's a mathematical number 3.14."

  • I would like to know what kind of number I look like =)

  • he is right...its saturday...!! april 12 , 1947

  • Letterman was nice in this interview - he normally makes fun of his guests, but was careful not to , as this person had trouble socialising as a result of his disorder. The guy was cool aswell - 'not your type of pie'.....hehe

  • He was right about David Letterman's birthday!

  • i think this guy doesnt have confident about his social ability. cause it seems just fine on here.............probably need a little more practice thats all

  • He's actually not a savant, he competed in memory competitions under a different name using the same techniques as everyone else. He couldn't win and knew he could get a lot more publicity claiming to be a savant.

  • @patrickgpking Cite that information? Are we supposed to just believe some comment?

  • @Glynntopian A thorough debunking of the guy can be found in Josh Foer's Moonwalking with Einstein. The author is actually pretty nice about it considering this guy is using a serious disorder for attention and money.

  • His social skills are impeccable.

  • I have Aspergers Syndrome and I love math and this week I found out I'm skipping grade 8 to go to straight into high school! Very exciting!

  • @MathMessenger good for you! *slow claps*

  • i love how when the david referred to aspergers and epilepsy as negative he said absolutely which in mathematical terms is the notation for ignoring negativity and only giving the positive of the number LOL.

  • nice guy

  • fascinating

  • daniel tammet is an inspiration! i just read 'born on a blue day', it was brilliant:)

  • Wait, I'm confused about the interview... so the cops knew internal affairs were setting them up???

  • This video tasted great. Like pecan pie.

  • I would love to meet this guy if only to know what number I look like :)............And I agree with the comment below from 123hitcreek,but the again this guy is one of the few Asperger sufferers and savan't who's overcome the social disability body language reading issues other have.

  • prove your power: GUESS MY BIRTHDAY

  • I have to agree with MEDABOREDME that Daniel Temmet is a fake. He is actually a trained mnemonist, not a savant with synesthesia. Josh Foer did a fairly thorough job debunking this guy in his book. While he could have Asperger's, this does not explain his abilities. The fact that his MRI did not show the activity in his brain that normally occurs in people with synesthesia should be proof enough.

  • I really don't think that a trained memorist can create a new language ( btw, Tammet is creating one called Mänti. Mänti has many features related to Finnish and Estonian, both of which are Finnic languages). Neither solve a mathematical problem in seconds

  • @CristaldeLeo - The key here is that you "don't think" it can be done, and the answer is that it can. Creating a new language is not that hard, think of all of those people that speak "Klingon" at Star Trek conventions. J.R.R. Tolkien created languages for his Middle Earth universe that resemble Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon languages. Also, solving mathematical problems in seconds can be done without being a natural math whiz and is a learned ability. Google search Tammet and debunked.

  • @natetheblade You are right, creating languages is possible... but learning mathematical abilities? Don't think so, you are born with those abilities, it's a king of inteligence. You just can't memorize them. And in Tammet's case, he was born being a savant.

  • @natetheblade I agree with you. Moonwalking with Einstein is an awesome book.

  • The so called "lack of social ability" is bullshit! I have a friend of 22 years old who has asperger and he's already had 3 long term girlfriends, he's got friends and likes going out. But the fuckstream-science imposed stickers just limit our potential.

  • @GetHotGirls i agree totally too - i know a friend who is 23 and has aspergers but you can hardly tell it's there - the first time I ever met him I never knew he had it until he told me

  • @GetHotGirls Lol... it varies a lot... I have semantic pragmatic disorder and I bet you've never heard of it but I have to rehearse what I'm going to say and I can't do that with people my age so I get on better with adults which would seem very social.Your friend probably has issues in areas of socialising but gets by with a lot of confidence. My asperger friend is like that and funnily enough by diagnosis I'm supposed to be more socially able and I'm reclusive compared to him.

  • @Dolphidood But he has to work at it and did... so the detrimental area of poor social interaction is complimented by the advantage of being able to concentrate on an area he knows is important to him....

ie. he can learn to be social a lot faster than would normally be the case.

The question i suppose is that with no frame of reference is he actually interacting socially...or is he acting the way one would do if one was highly social?

  • @MumblingMickey Yeah... I socialise by substituting my self image with people I've seen in reality or off Tv in fact I can't help it which is why it pisses me off when I hear people say just be yourself.

  • @Dolphidood There is a school of thought in psychology that would say a person who is liked by all...who seems to one person to be 'a great guy' and by another person with a different personality to also be 'a great guy' ... although outwardly highly social...has just learned how to extract quickly from someone enough information to give that impression.

Many people so this without even realizing it.

Are such people high social?... or is it in fact the exact opposite? How would we know?

  • @MumblingMickey I think most people conform with a stereotypes, one person from one group can be an alien in another. I think people with autism don't recognise these stereotypes as well and that's why they don't conform. I certainly didn't.

I cant fully trust anyone because everyone is bent around these stereotype assumptions and I have to try and judge the persons reactions to things I say in order to steer them over as a 'friend'... it just goes to show that we're all sheep.

  • @Dolphidood Well as a non conformist myself I'd tend to agree in with that... But I'd evaluate it positively.

All people are built to conform, the methodology or mental 'tricks' they use to accomplish that is another matter. But if we did not conform there would be no internet, no mobile phones, no families, no cars, no cities...we'd all be anarchists.

However even anarchists don't like solitary confinement! lol

Its pretty beneficial being a sheep! Personally, and for the flock!

  • His voice is so soothing...

  • @lydiamariacantu Einstein + Mr. Rogers= Daniel Tammet

  • Read his book, Born on a Blue Day.

    This guy is legit.

  • You just know Dave set that dude up. He had the question about the birthday beforehand and before the show he looked up his and found out what day it was on.

  • I am a artistic servant as well. Like if you wants me to draw a shoe for you i can do it.

  • Dave is great straightman, he makes his guests appear better.

This guy is naturally charming tho anyway.

  • nyahaha.. great guy.....

  • good guy

  • so he's a savant? this guy is nothing compared to rudiger gamm! he proved he wasn't a slave to an algorithm and he was something more! without any mental impairment!

  • @MEGABOREDME I have to agree. Tammet has been criticized as NOT being a savant but actually a trained memory expert.. I just finished Josh Foer's book "Moonwalking with Einstein" which explains part of Tammet's story of memorizing Icelandic while also being "mentally-handicapped." Foer personally believes Tammet, who is actually "Daniel Corney" (changed his name for w/e reason) is probably a mental expert and not an actual savant..Very interesting read. Anyone could do what he does with training

  • @robobobdude Very true, I've taught myself how to do cubes of any 2 digit number in a minute and that's just with repetition.

  • So, Letterman is Master Chief???? AWESOME SAUCE!

  • @Jacomelo117 lmao so im not the only one that noticed that

  • @Jacomelo117 I see what you did there.....

  • wat david letterman is doing is good. he is simply staying very conservative with his remarks as to not trigger any sort of unexpected response from Tammat. He obviously knows little about the disorders and wants to get thru the segment without rough bumps.

  • The UK rocks

  • Daniel looks like a boss and David Letterman kind of looks like an idiot here.

  • "savant-isms or powers or whatever it is". David Letterman you are an idiot

  • WHAT A BEAST

  • Letterman looks confused and uncomfortable at the end of the interview.

  • is letterman dumb or is he just acting dumb?

  • @seriall1337 I don't think he's stupid, it's just that his audience appreciates stupid humor. He makes a living by making his audience laugh, so obviously he's going to seem stupid.

  • Oh please, please, don't waste your incredible gifted mind on american talk shows, any talk show for that matter.

  • David Letterman is the masterchief?????

  • it makes me really sad because David Letterman looks like a total dumbass in this clip i.e. "so... is being a savant good?" and "pi day? so third month and whatever" and "i like bananas".
