Its a small flyback transformer that juices 3V-6V into HV AC...what your doing now will shorten the life of the FET thats being pushed by whatever thats timing the cycles...as they are designed for a quick short circuit before going open circuit again

yes in deed it smells like when i was younger & made continuos short-circuit with an 16 v adapter with about 2 amps. it smells the same.
