"Some say your nose, some say your toes, I think it's your mind, your mind. I think it's your mind."
How is such a simple line able to carry so much emotional weight. Every time I hear it all of my thoughts stop; I think this song makes the ugliness blink out for a moment. Beautiful
actually frank didn't hate the beatles and they are good artists. he was just mad that sgt pepper was called the first concept album when he had one before them.
@grevejp44 Yeah and Beatles were parodying concept albums by the long name Sgt Pepper (Capt Beefheart) Lonely Hearts Club band (Mothers of Invention). Zappa just answer them back with the name and album cover.
@J5MARLON actaully for what it sounded like when paul talked about it in the anthology documentary it wasn't a parody it was supposed to be a new beatles so he gave them a new name which at the time were really long. i don't know if he was actually influenced by zappa as far as the name but it could be possible.
@CornyPoopDude Although much has been said about "Sgt. Pepper" being the first concept album, the Beatles were inspired by Frank Zappa's "Freak Out"; a concept album released a year before.
At "Sgt. Pepper's" release, Paul McCartney said, "This is going to be our 'Freak Out.'"
@J5MARLON if you knew what you were talking about, the thing that inspired The Beatles to put out Sgt Peppers was Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys and Lennon and McCartney were blown away by Brian Wilson's music. And I'm a massive Beatles fan but get it right.
@davidbelkevitz1311 Not true. Yes, they loved Pet Sounds, but they cited Freak Out as one of their major influences. You're the one that should get it right.
@violatress Ok, I will give you that one :-) I forgot McCartney had mentioned something about the Freak Out album. And to J5Marlon, I'm aware that they had many influences but we were talking about the concept of Sgt Peppers and they said that after hearing Pet Sounds they had to step it up a notch.
Frank Zappa is seriously one of the most intelligent, ridiculous musicians to ever live. I've rarely heard music that has so much controlled chaos as Zappa's.
@whitedwarf13 Frank wasn't like that. Such would had comercial potential. Frank had a label on the cover of his records saying: No comercial potencial. George Duke told in a documentary (which I no longer can find on YT) that Frank once did make up/change parts an original composition. George responded: Frank, it's a beautiful piece of music! You can't do that!
@vinzer72frie Flower power doesn't suck - it's the pretentious naive and stupid creeps that ruin it. That's part of the joke with Zappa's stuff. To say 'HURR THIS OR THAT SUCKS' kind of misses the point of the satire. Also the flower power people were the ones buying the Zappa & the Mothers albums so if they can take a joke they can't be all bad.
