Takara produced Diaclone (toy lines of Transformers) in 1980 and Hasbro imported it in 1984. Popy produced Machine Robo (toy lines of Gobots) in 1982 and Tonka imported it in 1983.

1980 - Diaclone (toy line)

1982 - Machine Robo (toy line)

1984 - Gobots (cartoon)

1984 - Transformers (cartoon)

and there were tons of robot anime / toy lines in the 1970s. neither Transformers nor Gobots were original.

Apparently some of you have no idea what you are talking about. The Gobots were actually pretty awesome, and had a totally different vibe to the transformers. Gobots (cartoon) was an american cartoon. Transformers (cartoon) was a sort of Japanese anime (written in American, animated in Japan).

btw the 1970s was the golden age of robot anime. my favorites are Getter Robo (1974), Daiaporon (1976), Voltes V (1977), Daimos (1978), Daltanius (1979) and Gundam (1979). if you have an interest in old anime, search "robot anime history" or "robot anime op collection".

Actually, the Gobots ARE a rip-off. When Hasbro bought the rights to the toyline they brought them to America and gave them the name, "The Transformers" with the intent of releasing the toyline here and eventually, the show. Tonka, realizing what Hasbro had done, brought "Machine Robo" over from Japan and reimaged them as Gobots.

In a rush to get the line out they created an inferior toyline & series. So even though Gobots was released first, the idea itself was ripped off from Hasbro.

The "Gobots" toys were around before the "Transformers" toys, and the Gobots cartoon aired first also. The marketing for Gobots was rushed, which is why they didn't have the lasting power of the Transformers, which had great fiction backing it up, ie comics & a great (better than Gobots anyway) cartoon. The Go-Bots actually came out before Transformers did (83 and TF was 84). Cool thing was they were made here in MN by the Tonka Toy Co. TF eclipsed Go-Bots for one big reason! Hasbro marketing!

Tonka beat them to distribution here in a America, but Transformers beat Gobots by two months in Japan, releasing in November 82 and Gobots in late January 83. Its a common misconception that Gobots came first.
