Pope Pius XII directed convents and monasteries to hide Jews, he and many other bishops directed Catholic Churches to forge baptismal certificates for Jews so that they weren't taken by the Nazis. Cardinal Sapieha of Krakow defended the Jews and hid people so that they were not taken away. Millions of Polish Catholics were killed by the Nazis; about half of Poland's priests were killed by the Nazis. We did alot to try and help the Jews.

JDZ: Millions did nothing because they lived in fear !!! It would have been easy to be a "monday morning quarterback" from the safety and comfort of one's home in the USA. But the people of Europe had reasons to be afraid. I for one don't know if I would have the courage for example in Poland to help a Jewish person. The Poles were brutalized by both the Germans and the Russians. Helping Jews was punishable by death to you and your entire family.

well to me communism really is an impossible utopia. If you read Karl Marx his book is really only a critique of Capitalism. He critiques how industries in order to cut cost they'll keep on reducing people's use value(quality) and increasing their exchange value(production). I don't think communism was "ill concieved", but it has been greatly misinterpret. In theory communism was supposed to be an evolutionary process for humanity. I'm Jewish and I don't see why we can't appreciate the gesture of his visit and speech. It was a nice thing to do, and I find it to be quite a moving image: The white-clad pope (w/kippa!) standing in Yad Vashem.

And in a world where we have few friends, it is nice to think that most Christians/Catholics support Israel and the Jewish people... We need all the help we can get.

We don't have any problems with Poland, at least I don't and NO Jewish people I know do either.

In fact, I was just at an event last night where I met a very nice Polish-Jewish family... And there was a holocaust survivor there who was also Polish.
