That's what he gets for trying to tow it to the side. He neede to get a little more distance out in front to decrease the angle. Notice he just turned around and didn't duck. When you think something is goint to hit you, DUCK!
Volvo tug links are only good on a straight pull. No side pull and a straight pull using both sides requires a fairly long bridle set up to keep from pulling the frame rails together and damaging radiator mounts. Volvos don't hang together well, safe for driver, pain in the ass for recovery.
I'm amazed how many vids there are on here of operators exceeding the SWL of their equipment. This guy was lucky not to be killed by his lack of knowledge or short cutting. Its the next time where he isnt so lucky that i'm afraid of.
ALWAYS use a short chunk of chain with hooks on the straining cable. Hook the cable to the tow point, then hook the chain to the cable with a closed hook...hook the other end of the chain to a part of the towed truck...leave it loose. If a hook or clevis snaps, the cable will not go flying like that.
I am a heavy tow operator for one of the biggest tow companies in North America.. This guy gives all tow operators a bad name.. Maybe he should invest in some wreckmaster training.. If your a little educated, it will help you work more safe, and even sometimes, less hard.
1st of all he's too close to the stuck truck. How far is he going to even pull it had it not broke lose. The first truck has it's top he only needed the bottom.
2nd, He's on the wrong side of his truck working controls. Did you see where the cable went. He's lucky he didn't lose his head there for sure.
@Snowman374th He is too close and the angle on the line too sharp but he indeed is on the proper side of the truck. You see the winch line shot towards the driver side of the truck, you basically don't want to be anywhere inline with the cable or close to it. Outside of remote control he's at his best spot for view and safety.
@killer2600 Nah watch closer. It goes right by his head and bounces of the passenger side of his boom bro!
Maybe for the view but not safety. 10 yrs Interstate towing. Indy. I was trained by the very best Indy had to offer.
I was number 4 in line with the best they had. I could have went to big trucks but I stayed on the small & medium duty. Then went to driving those big boy's. I'm not sure if I made the right choices though. LoL
@Snowman374th actually I did see it bounce off the boom but if you notice it looped around from driver side went over the boom and hit the passenger side of it. Maybe you feel lucky but I never want to be in line with a winch cable where I'm staring straight down it. Some guys say it's the safest spot to be where others like me argue against it. One thing is for sure, no part of the cable came towards the operator nor in his direction.
@Snowman374th True it's no biggie but if you notice he doesn't move until after the cable hits the tow truck and makes a loud clunk. Truthfully where he was at it's very hard to get hit by a cable under tension that sudden breaks free there just aren't enough forces in physics that would send it over to him at the controls there.
if the hook didn snap loose... will the winch be able to pull that whole truck out of that ditch? doesn't look very possible... angles and size of the truck...
When I was a kid my uncle was killed by the cable. It snapped and hit him in the head and killed him.Thats why they should make these guys where hard hats.
@kemplozano a snatch block wouldn't be of any assistance here. What's wrong is he is side pulling on a lifting hook which is a No-No! Those Volvo hooks are rated for 8500 lbs, that's it... If that hook would have hit him he'd be in dire straits...
I always assume everything owned or worked on by someone else is held together with rusty, over torqued grade 3 bolts.

Those pins are for a straight forward pull at best. Perhaps its time for some training.

Dragging a truck up on 10K eyes meant for a straight pull, pulling the highest point of the tow rings, and a yard and a 1/2 from the Volvo.... Retard

But I can see that cable all the way on my end... He moved back and the cable slams passenger side of the boom.
But it's cool. No biggie. He's alive.
