Wow I've been looking for this movie for years. Like everyone else on here I remember it from childhood but couldn't remember the name. What a great find. Thanks
I remember this show and no one else did, I never knew what happened with it because no one remembered it!! Now I found it!! A blast from my childhood.
I remember this when I was a little kid in the late 60's and early 70's. The elementary school I went to would show it sometimes several times a year. I think I even saw it at the Junior High I went to also in the 1970's. It was great I wish I could find a site online that has the whole movie in one piece. It looks like someone split it into five pieces and posted it on here.
I googled this on a whim and I am glad that I did. I remember seeing this movie over 40 years ago with my brother and sister. I remember tearing up at the end and being teased because I was "sentimental". I was six. lol
I thought of this recently, being probably the first foreign film I'd ever seen. I recently moved to Japan, and this film came to mind. I'll never forget the final scene, with Fatty shouting "Komatsu!"
I too saw this movie when it aired as part of the CBS Children's Film Festival. This was easily my favorite of the foreign films they showed, leaving so much of an impact that I remember it to this day, decades later.
Having grown up in the Midwest in farm country, we weren't exposed to other peoples and cultures. So, when they showed this on TV it was the first time I had ever been exposed to Japanese culture and people. My brother's and I loved this classic and made certain to watch it every time it was repeated.
Wow! I remember this from 40 years ago, and I remember loving the chemistry that developed between Komatsu and his burly buddy. I wish I could see the whole thing again! Thank you for reintroducing it after all this time!
THANK YOU ,THANK YOU, Thank you, I had not seen this in 40 years but remember it fondly .. What quality did this movie possess that cemented it in my mind after only seeing it once? This series was 40 years ahead of the times. It still is.
Oh you are right, I hadn't thought along those lines. I would prefer the kid not watch something like Grave of the fireflies until they can read, Because the little girls osaka ben (accent) is crucial to understanding what might be the saddest movie ever made. I bought the DVD watched it and knew I would never be able to bear seeing that again.
@CBSCFFestival I actually don't believe that that's true. I have showed my daughter foreign films from before she was able to read and even speak fluently. I think pre-readers are used to following stories without fully understanding the language. And I think I think sub-titles actually encourage children to read because they want to know what the characters are saying. It's valuable for children to hear other languages being spoken, even if they don't understand.
My brother and I loved this film when we saw it back, I think, in the mid-60's. It came on sunday after church on some children's film festival. Does anyone remember?
It was the CBS Children's Film Festival. From 1967-1971 the CCFF was broadcast annually on Sunday afternoons in the spring, before moving to the Saturday morning lineup the fall of 1971. Skinny and Fatty & Hand in Hand were two of the mainstays during those years.
Something strange happened to all the kids who saw this film....was there subliminal programming attached? We all seem to be different somehow from our peers. And the "Thank you" line could be the trigger!
this movie was the best movie i have ever seen i was alwas skinny and tall and it taught me to stick up for my friends that were bigger in size i grew to 6'4" and learned to protect my heavier freinds this was the best movie i have ever seen when i was 11 i wish they played the whole thing Rich Vandine pa
This movie is one of my earliest memories from the Kukla Fran and Ollie show. It was my first non cartoon movie and the story of friendship has stayed with me my whole life. Very profound
Too bad youngsters nowadays aren't treated to this wonderful collection of films showcased by CBS back in the '70s. Not simply nostalgia here. These were simply good films that children would be interested in watching, and often have important lessons for them. So much garbage out there now for the youngins.
I have always remembered this movie. I remembered the game they played with the ball and the two cups attached to the pole. I always thought he said "Kumatsu I love you". Maybe that was the gay version. We watched this many times at school in Social Studies class. It was our favorite. I also saw it on the Kukla Fran and Ollie show. Brings back so many memories, thanks for posting.
I too would like a copy of this film. It haunts me. Remember the end, where the fat boy goes to find the skinny one, but he's moved away? and he cries, "Komatsu! Thank you!" Or is it the other way around, skinny tries to find fatty?
I'm 50. I liked this when I was a kid. "Thank You Komatsu".I thought I was the only kid in the US that saw this. None of my friends did. I'm glad I'm not the only one! Why does this simple message seem so important to me, and maybe you too?
Yes..."Thank you Komatsu" shouted across the valley I believe...it's been years, but that phrase and all the meaning behind it stuck with me since I was seven....great to see this here just great!
@evolesel I saw this when I was a kid. It was the first time I'd ever cried watching tv and it was embeded in my heart. Once the internet got going, I was able to find this on video and now is a part of my collection.
i remember this also but can someboby tell me if this is the one when fatty fart in the tub while both boys are in together lol. i remeber the water bubbling ha ha
I don't think so. Back in the '70s there was a Japanese soap commercial that was shown late at night. Don't know why they showed it, pretty bizarre actually, but the commercial was in color, and they had a jingle (in Japanese of course) that they sang when heading off to the tub. Probably around here somewhere.
when i was a kid my brother and i loved, Loved, LOVED this film!!! and so manhy of the others you're posting oh you are a little star! please please post them all in their entirety and i'll love you forever! x

Some years ago I located the online vendor for this video and sent him his stated fee for a copy and never received a reply, not to my original payment nor to my followup. Is there no other source? My desire to have a copy borders desperation!

Thank you! It's nice to know I didn't make that up. :)

It should be illegal to dub films
andocrates 2 years ago
I hate dubbing with a passion, but it's a necessary evil when it comes to children's films. Subtitles aren't much help if you can barely read. ;)
