  • Can someone explain me how can Yellow Lancer be singing in this show? He was not even born when this "adventure" of Robotech supposedly happen!

  • @ronquila Well the song doesn't actually appear in the movie at all. All the lines, music and so forth in this video aren't in the movie. It's more then likely this is either from the possible "Lost Cut/First Cut" of Robotech: The Movie or is a little preview that was quickly put together to reveal that a Robotech movie was coming.

  • This is an Anime called "Megazone 23" (in Japan)

  • Just make another Robotech series without dubbing another show.

  • i seen this in the thaeter back in the 80s no shit for real!

  • Its a nagging feeling that I need to see this movie somehow, no matter how bad they say it is.

But its called the untold story, and i respect their wisdom that it shouldn't really be told at all.

  • @emancoy

Check my account, the whole movie is on there.

  • Carl Macek has a nickname of "The Godfather of Anime" according to IMDB. But a more appropriate nickname for purists to him is "The Godfather of Butchered Anime." I'm not necessarily the purist type, but does anyone here think so?

  • nooo....Osamu Tezuka was carries that moniker or something similar. However Macek does have a name that suits him. MACEKRE pronounced as MASSACRE.seeing as how he cut up anime like Macross and Captain Harlock and mash them together as a "new creation" Then he gets his cronies to get the nessecary rights so the companies who produced the anime don't get reconginiton.

  • That's why I said he should be nicknamed "The Godfather of Butchered Anime" as well as have the term Macekre existing.

  • ahh so you have! forgive me.that point goes to you!

  • I like robotech and can see why this never got off the ground and in a way I'm glad it didn't

  • IIRC, there were test showings in Texas.

  • IIRC?

  • If I Recall Correctly, that's what IIRC means.

  • is it so hard to write out

  • WTF is this? this is'nt robotech it's just clips of Megazone 23 and southern cross spliced together horribly butchered X_X...this has to be one of the most butchered dubbed animes i've seen next to 4kids's bastardrization of onepiece.XD

  • robotech is a butchered up collection of Moesopedia and Macross what is it that you'd expect

  • Well, think of it this way. If Carl Macek hadn't convinced so many local station to carry his "Butchered up collection" and made them see that dubbing Japanese anime was a viable option, nobody in the US would have known that anime even existed, and you'd be stuck watching the the 45th season of "The Scooby and Scrappy Comedy Hour".

  • @akumacornflakes

That is the stupidest argument ever. What about STAR BLAZERS (which, by the way, was very popular and less edited and fucked up than Robotech). And Carl Macek started the whole trend of fucking with series just to fuck with them. Why was it necessary to make so many little changes that don't contribute anything? Take your nostalgia glasses off and ask yourself how you'd feel if this happened to series you currently enjoy

  • @roothands

I don't have any nostalgia for Robotech, since I wasn't alive when it was new. This means that I can enjoy it for what it is, and I certainly am doing just that.

  • @roothands Well, this actually happened with Dragon Ball, One Piece, and many other series which were "adapted" to the American audience!

  • This was released in Sweden and i got it :P

  • Fame! I'm gonna live forever! @ 1:11

  • hey is this anime cuz it looks american i only saw one japanese name in the credits

  • This is anime. The American names were the people who rewrote it and voice acted.

  • I'm happy it came out later the way it's original creators wanted to. Carl Macek can't do anything but edit other people's work.

  • i have'nt seen the full version of this yet....people keep saying this sucks but if you really want to watch an anime movie that's really buthered go watch Clash of the Bionoids or any of the English dubbed Animeigo releases lol....

  • I like this better than the Sentinels.....and i like it better than Megazone 23 which seemed a little slower paced...

  • I agree, though i liked Megazone 23 alot, for some reason i liked this more

  • A total fluke or purely intentional. Either way, I wish my bike could do that.

  • Ugh

The original music was much better

  • I have this vhs, there's pretty goog music on it... the story doesn't have anything to do whit Robotech, but it's a good action movie.

  • Huh? Why was the Garland yellow?

  • Well if you've seen MEGAZONE 23 you should know that when we get to see the Garland for the first time, it is yellow and then later gets painted in the more familar red.

  • Just checked, and you're right. I guess I forget about these little details over time.

  • Now I see why this was canned, and Robocop prevailed.

  • Does anyone know where I can get this movie?

  • Yeah, on VHS from the UK, although you'll have trouble finding it since the movie only made it's way to rental and is now over 20 years old. Plus, the footage here is different to that of the actual movie.

  • ok. I live in the US, so I'll need to have it imported.

  • Again, good luck finding a copy that someone is either willing to part with or put up on an auction site. The VHS doesn't appear all too often on the likes of eBay, and if you find a copy, you'll need a TV and VCR that can play PAL signals.

  • Errrr, it's footage from the original cut of Robotech: The Movie.

  • This is Megazone23 part 1, total BS.

  • You're right; the Robotech Movie is made of footage from the first Megazone23 OVA and a all-new ending Harmony Gold had animated.

Just like Robotech is Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada put together.

  • Robotech was not based on MZ23, if it was then Rick would be riding a tranformer bike not flying a veritech.

  • Reading comprehension. The *Movie* (from which this clip originates) is based on MegaZone 23. The *TV Show* was based on Macross/Southern Cross/Mospeada(Mospeeder.. whatever)

For those that are curious, you can download the movie via bittorrent.

  • Harmony Gold released this movie in theaters limited to the Austin, Texas area to bankroll their planned original series "Robotech: The Sentinels". However, a ratings error led to the film being given a G rating instead of PG-13. Outraged parents groups boycotted the movie, generating tons of bad publicity. As a result, any hopes for a national release were squashed, and Harmony Gold ended up filing for bankruptcy.

  • Yeah, they ended up filing for bankruptcy, despite still being in business. And Robotech II: The Sentinels was canned due to Matchbox dropping out on co-producing and the dollar/yen ratio drastically changing.

  • I did not know that. The version I heard came from "Robotech: Art Book 3". I just recalled them mentioning the Sentinels project rested on the success of the movie.

  • There was a connection between the movie and Robotech II: The Sentinels. The original planned version of the movie which would have been set during the MACROSS saga would have had it's characters go over to The Sentinels. But when problems arose and setting the movie in the MACROSS timeline had to be dropped, so was the character idea, so names and designs were changed. And example is Mark Landry was Rick Baker and B.D. Andrews being T.R. Edwards.

  • I believe in order for the movie to see a release again, it would probably require Harmony Gold to reacquire the license to MEGAZONE23 again.

  • thats true..

  • okay..how did a small motorcycle turn into a giant robot?

  • It transforms?

The Modat-5/Garland isn't exactly a giant robot when you compare it to the size of the Hovertanks or Alphas.

  • this has nothing to do with robotech. this is another movie (a b anime movie that starred the voice of rick hunter). it was a rather "forgetable movie". that's why i don't even remember his name

  • Tony Oliver didn't do any voice work on this movie. Mark was voiced by Kerrigan Mahan.

  • Fuck this, give me Megazone 23 over this, Give me the Macross univerese over the freak universe of Robotech, give me Southern Cross and Mospeada over Robotech...simply Robotech is a joke!

  • hope it on dvd i wish

  • is it out on dvd

  • Nope. And it's highly unlikely it ever will be released on DVD unless Harmony Gold try and require the rights to the OAV MEGAZONE23 again.

  • what year did the movie come out

  • It had it's test run in 1986, and other then a few releases in some european countries and a VHS release in the UK around 1987, this movie has been more or less forgotten about.

  • Shogo Yahagi is his Japanese name, but in this Robotech movie, he was called Mark.

  • Not new. It's Megazone 23 Part I, a pretty good story on its own if you get a chance to see it that way.

  • This movie is the only thing Robotech I haven't seen, but I've been told thats a good thing.

  • I'm surprised nobody else has realised that all the dialogue spoken in this clip doesn't match up to the released version of 'Robotech:The Untold Story' at all. Perhaps this footage comes from an early cut that Cannon rejected.

  • People probably don't know because this was not in wide release or widely possessed for people to remember the dialogue.

  • Understandable, but copies of the movie have been floating around for a while now, you just gotta know where to look.

  • if you read the comments, it is believed that this is from the original dubbing session[which is rumoured to have been completed]. the film was re-edited and re-dubbed at the last minute because of studio pressure. it is believed that this version of the film was destroyed in a flood at the offices of harmony central a few years ago. they still have a copy of the script which a few fans have tried to get them to publish online. it cant be any worse then the shadow chronicles.

  • Huh, I really liked the Shadow Chronicles.

  • i remember a tv serie like 15 years ago they had the vikes an fought the invids but i do not remember if it was before or afther rick hunter`s histori or the full name i only remember a a green haired guy that sings inn a dress gay?

  • That would be the third set- Robotech New Generation or Mospeada in japan

  • got the full version of this, terrible, im huge robotech fan but this is awful, only recently got a copy and had already viewed megazone 23 so this felt copied and it has no feeling of any of the original robotech series, better it didn't get much of a release

  • I'm lost I've never seen this and watch robotech as a kid. Someone care to explain

  • When Robotech was hot in the mid 1980s, they wanted to produced a film in addition to the TV series already in syndication. Harmony Gold bought the rights to a Original Video Animation (OVA) called MegaZone 23 and re-edited and re-dubbed the footage into Robotech: The Untold Story. This story has very little to do with the TV series.

It debute in Dallas, TX only in 1985 or 86?? for about a month, but claimed that it was not worthy of a wider domestic distribution.

  • Si alguien me puede explicar de que se supone que trata esto, se lo agradeceria por siempre

  • Wow, that musta been one hell of an old vid you dusted off man. Very fun to watch. I always wondered how on earth they ever tried to chop Megazone 23 into a movie with Robotech in the name. I sure bet the sex between the protagonist boy and the girl was not in the final cut for the movie.

  • Una mierda!!!!

  • Well, one good thing about this video is that I now know where all those songs on my Robotech CDs come from. I have Megazone, so I might watch it to see if they were used.

  • Akyho, those three series weren't "butchered". For starters, it's the reason why Anime is so accepted nowadays here in the States. What they did to create the Robotech anime series worked. This thing with Megazone 23 was a rush hack job by Cannon Films that ADV and Harmony Gold wish never happened.

    So do your homework.

  • your telling me that while they did butcher macross and other anime to make robotech, they made a movie useing the anime megazone 23? why cant the Americans just have left them?

  • Nice, Megazone 23

  • I like how they assume that just because they dubbed in the Robotech soundtracks people 'might' accepted it as so lol! Did anyone notice Yellow Dancer's song from The Southern Cross series? I may track it down just to see it's hilarity ,laugh at how obsurd it is and how disconnected it really is to anything Robotech.

    (:

    nice find BTW!

  • I remember seeing this movie as a kid (actually, it might even be the first time I saw an anime). Brings back memories...

  • I thought this is Megazone 23, despite the dub, but i waited for robotech the movie for so long, thx i finally got to see what they were doin. But im way into anime after that Macross, 7 and plus, dbz , but it was the start, i still like RT

  • Despite what RT: The Movie was (aweful), I highly recomment seeing Megazone 23.

  • Nice Bike !

  • Too bad, this would've been awesome!

  • Verily - the entire plot of Megazone is gone, and the entire movie was chopped up and shuffled about to create the plot HG wanted.

And even then, it's not very well-linked to the show in the first place - all it does is has some familliar enemies... sorta.

  • Megazone 23 was japans first Original Animated Video in the early 1980's...when HG got the rights to use the footage for their Robotech movie, they actually had the original studio create an Alternate ending which can be found in MZ23Part2 DVD's in Japan Only.

  • Actually, it was the second Original Video Animation - the first one being a little-known and really forgettable thing that just broke even.

And I don't know about DVDs, but that bonus footage is on the Laserdisc release.

  • BTW I also remember seeing a version of robotech when I was a kid. Where a zentradi bashes through a window and abducts minmei while she is naked. It was a movie BTW has anyone seen this version!?

  • If you mean the movie - I have. It's horridly done.

If you mean the Minmei thing, try Macross: Do You Remember Love.

  • I don't know if I like this or not!? I saw something else on youtube looked like a southern cross movie? IS this the same one!?

  • yes... origianally the plot was going to be about Mark during the Macross era on earth uncovering the govermant conspiricy to keep Robotech and the Zentradie a secret. the film studio "cannon" didn't think it had enough action so Macek spliced in footage from southren cross and made it about the Masters coming to take the data aboard the SDF-1's computer which had been relocated, and was used ot create the EVE personae, which would be latter dumped into the Android JANICE.

  • I'm selling an original vhs of this on Ebay.

  • The scenes shown here might be for the robotech the movie, but the movie was two different anime's, Southern Cross, and Megazone 23 part 1. the scenes above are from Megazone 23
