As a big animal lover & rescuer, I admire you! It also amazes me how Barney knew to swim to you. He knew he'd be in good hands. The dog was traumatized by the scene and chaos that he ran away as far as he could and took to the water because he thought the yellow kayak belonged to their family (as the Chan family, the dog owners, are avid kayakers)? On an small island near Stanial Cay, Exuma, Bahamas, I had a large sow (pig) swim up to the boat about a mile off shore. She was well known among the locals who called her Bucket. She got most of her food by swimming out and begging from boats. They warned me to keep away as she was aggressive.

I have a sailboat and cruise the Bahamas. Once I picked up a labador dog 3 miles from the nearest shore. After resting a while on deck he jumped back in the water and continued on to an island a couple of miles away. I asked around and the locals told me that this dog swims between these islands all the time. He is sort of a local collective pet. Later I saw him on another island at a fancy hotel, poolside on a chaise lounge, getting served lunch like a tourist.

But what are the chances of this individual kayaking off the gulf coast and finding the dog so that he can be able to reunite it with the respected family? There are forces at work here people...
