@AniceAct this car is also on my list for a first car, the rotary engine has fairly simple maintenance, all you have to do is top off your oil after every 2 fill ups. And get your oil changed every 3,000 miles, and yes the automatic is good cause it also comes with the paddle shifters

@biostyle Automatic means the car does the shifting for you. A manual / standard (depending on the country you live in) requires the driver to operate an additional petal (clutch) and select the gear they are in. The RX-8 depending on the year (not sure if this has changed for Series 2) has less HP (197 vs 238 ), less RPM range, and due to the automatic usually shifting at sub 3.5k RPM it causes a quicker carbon fouling of the engine which has been blamed for plenty of early auto engine deaths.

@suprahmed Yes, in a cold weather you should let your car warm up, until the rpm gets to the appropriate range. Then you have to rev the engine up to about 7-9000 rpm to burn off the excess oil and fuel for a couple of times(rotary engine love high revs), whether it's in cold weather or warm. Then after all that, you may start to drive. If you just go in and start the engine and drive, expect problems in the near future. There's also the type of oil you should use/ change every miles.

@acidmonkey83 actually a wrx performes almost the same to an rx-8, wrx produces 224hp or so.. and a sti is faster by much, produce 305hp... same as evo.. and ralliart.. which produce 291 and 237 horses respectively... so dont say u rather have an auto rx-8.. cuz it performes good, but not as much as lancer or wrx.. and i dont hate the rx-8.. i love that car :)

Make sure to tell him to keep those apex seals well oiled. If they were to wear out, you could be looking at a new engine! The apex seals, for those who don't know, are seals on the edge of the rotor inside the rotary tunnel. Should they wear and not be oiled, they could damage the inside of the rotary tunnel and then you'd be in trouble!
