I saw this movie, Twisted Nerve, in 1969. It starred Hayley Mills with Hywel Bennett as a psycho. It remains one of the most terrifying movies I ever saw, partly because of this theme which is simultaneously cheerful and scary. Its use in Kill Bill was, I believe, an inside joke and a tribute to Herrmann.

Bernard Herrmann's music is incredible. I recently bought the soundtrack of Brian DePalma's Sisters and listen to it while walking to the bus stop---a route which takes me though a very dull suburban sprawl but listening to Herrmann's beautifully dreamy melodies give the most mundane surrounds a beautiful strangeness.

He would have had to composed for a film previously and Tarantino could have used Twisted Nerve in his film, decades after it was previously composed.
