My mistake. I do hear the clave though it is very, very subtle. The first 2+ minute is not easy to dance to. I suppose you have to find something from the horns and then just the hold the beat.

@bunsofveal , for me it's not so much an issue with finding the beat, rather the "jumpy" character that just feels wrong for salsa dancing. It's like you hear a horse gallop or something.

@Salsa3914 : that's the whole point of the song. You're supposed to do basic steps until 2:46 and then it's time for tricks...This is the best song to dance to....Your nuts if you call this Cumbia. There is no snare drum whatsoever, no ta ta sound at all. The gallop you are hearing is the timbales being hit on the side mixed with the bongos, congas, and maracas. A cowbell is just an element of Salsa music which Puerto Ricans over use. This is true Cuban Salsa done perfectly.

As far as the people dancing, only 1 couple expressed movements of cumbia, the rest were dancing CUBAN style salsa. For the record, Puerto Ricans didn't create the music/dance for the genre known as salsa.

As for "La Vida.." being a Cumbia, those who know about these things agree with me, search salsaforums (links not working) . They are not dancing Casino, it's a simple continental latino style cumbia/salsa, and cumbia, with a lot of jumping. Have you ever heard another "salsa" with this kind of strong horse gallop rhythm?

Not jumpy, strong emphasis on 2 and 6, obvious clave all through, strong tumbao, very different, clearly a classic salsa. Unlike "La Vida..", which is only partially a salsa. The fact that you like it doesn't make it a salsa.

Many list this as their favorite salsa, which it is not. It's a cumbia. There's a salsa influenced part at 2:46-4:16 though. The dancing in the video is cumbia.
