ya that place is shitty. There's a bunch of better breakfast places in Santa Cruz/Atos Ca. I live there, and if you want a chronic breakfast go to red apple cafe in aptos
Well let's just say. I have no F#%k@*g idea why he went there. I like the show and usually he features good stuff. I live 2 minutes from this place and never eat there. With good reason ! It's shit!!
I went to SC with friends just a couple of days ago but the Pho there tasted horrible. The soup was watered down so much. My friend ordered the chicken curry and gave up eating it after a few bites. Plus the spring rolls were not that fresh(ingridient wise)
We're regulars too! A few other cool little things I love: sugar in a container. I hate sugar packets! Random Trivial Pursuit cards on the table while you're waiting (which is never that long). The $8.99 Prime Rib special! Awesome Chicken Fried Steak! Best spot for breakfast in town! I <3 Santa Cruz Diner!
Live in SC and had no idea that SC diner was featured on DD&D! I go here all the time with friends, they have everything and for the most part it is pretty good. Plus it is incredibly amusing to read all the signs on the walls. Love seeing SC on tv =]
Pho one of Anthony Bourdain's comfort foods. good 2 see it cooked in the US, but we need it here in the DMV (DC MD & VA) 4 all those who dont know. tied of just oodles-n-noodles. we need some PHO!!
believe me this is not the way "pho" is supposed to be cooked. I'm 100% Vietnamese and I've been eating "pho" for my whole life. why the f*ck did she put cinnanmon in "pho"? and peanut butter in the sauce for spring rolls??? come one, 99% of Vietnamese never eat peanut butter!!!
@itsmethaturfinding wtf, the cinnamon would give the pho a good taste. And you would probably not be able to taste it very much anyways. And I am sure many recipes of pho would use cinnamon, mainly because VIETNAM ACTUALLY HAS ONE OF THE LARGEST CINNAMON HARVESTS IN THE WORLD. And the peanut butter thing would just give the peanut sauce a good taste, and would brighten the peanut flavor, and i dot know why you would think vietnamese people dont eat peanut butter
@Haileyheartsyou Pho is originated in the Northern Vietnam, and most traditional family would put ginger in it instead. That's how it's supposed to be cooked. Like someone else said below, it might be according to each individual family's receipt. But pay a visit to a traditional Hanoi's restaurant and ask the cook what they actually put in pho. I'm sure they would go for ginger.
As for peanut butter, WE DON'T PUT PEANUT BUTTER IN SPRING ROLL SAUCE. Freaking ridiculous!
@itsmethaturfinding the ginger is normally use when they make the chicken broth for the Pho, but for the beef broth I'm sure they use cinnamon. And you can't taste the cinnamon in the broth. Plus, the peanut butter thing, it's kind of odd, yes, but that's why it's a recipe, it's just something new to try
This place sucked donkey balls, BIG TIME! I drove up from L.A. to this place as my Triple D tour, and let's say it failed with flying colors. Nothing was good. Only thing that was above average, was the service. I'm SUPER bummed out about this place, because I got love for Santa Cruz, but I dont have love for the Santa Cruz Diner.
I've never seen that lady cook at all in the diner, I always see two other guys that were not even showed on this video, what is up with that? And also the owner is not as friendly as he looks, he seems arrogant.
this place is HORRIBLE. was just there on 4th of July weekend, and the food was mediocre at best. We ordered a kids burger for my 3yr old son who took just one bite. When we were getting ready to leave, we asked for boxes and the OWNER/MANAGER himself cleared my son's plate!! When we told him that we wanted to take it home, he said "Well what do you want me to do about it? I have people to sit." FCUK THIS PLACE! NEVER GOING BACK. FCUK U SANTA CRUZ DINER!!
I can't believe the SC diner was on this show. Really? Hmmm. I have lived in SC my whole life and think this is one of the worst restaurants here. I don't like the food poisoning that I got here twice or the homeless people who hang around in the parking lot who accost diners for their leftovers or money. There are so many better places in SC that could have been featured on this show.
She makes chicken broth because most Americans just prefer chicken in general. The beef pho is way better but people order the chicken a lot more because they just like chicken soup more.
I wonder why she doesn't make the pho broth out of beef bones instead, maybe it's because the broth would be too dark? Haha but it's cool to see Vietnamese cooking on this show. Want good pho? Little Saigon in California got the legit places to eat.
I live near the diner. Good food. Prime rib diner only 8.99, Monday thru Thursday. Try the artichoke chicken. Great owners always willing to make things right. Just so many things to try. Home frys at Denny's and Ihop out of bag, at Santa Cruz dinner, out of a fresh potato.
My mom lives down there in Santa Cruz, and I went there one day for breakfast a few years ago when my mom had a hysterectomy, and they have REALLY GREAT FOOD!!!! I loved it!!! I'm glad that they put it on there.
Looks good! Just because its a diner doesn't mean it can't be authentic Asian. Kim Looks pretty authentic to me. my guess is Pho is one of those dishes every family makes a bit differently. I love Pho and am going to try to make it myself from this show. The key to Pho is the broth and the ingredients here look pretty consistent with other recipes I have seen.
Great diner, I go there at least twice a week. Cheap food and friendly staff. The pho is just $5 and most people dont finish it. Really you cant go wrong with anything there, beware the biscuits and gravy they are massive and really the only thing I did not like were the potato cakes for breakfast. I'v had almost everything off the menu but Im usually not around for dinner hours. Anyway, its good stuff.
I just lost all respect for Diners Drive-in and Dives after they went here. There is NO way the pho is even remotely close to authentic and the pho is just terrible. The only reason I ever went there is becasue I got tired of going to denny's all the time and I regret going.
@jaywhoa802 Dont be that harsh bud. I'm a Hanoian Vietnamese (come to Hanoi in Northern Vienam if you ever want to know what real pho is) I think Kim is a Southern VNmese (like most VNmese American) and we in the North often say that they don't know $#it bout pho in the South but she's done the pho quite right in my opinion. Just one thought: Beef or chicken pho are actually totally different variations. She seems to mess things up here. Why dont Kim make the broth with beef or beef bones ???
well, no experience in 1998 means now 12 years of experience in the restaurant business. fyi. i never realized you could order Asian food here,lol- but i'll challenge anyone to a banana split eating contest there!
wow this is crazy!!!!! food network is running out of places to show!? Im a student at UCSC and I choose Denny's or this other place called Jeffrey's Diner over Santa Cruz Diner allday everyday
I've been to this place before this video was made and thought the food sucked... Now watching this video and hearing from their own words "No experience in the restaurant business" explains a whole lot
Don't be fooled by this place people... This diner is extremely mediocre at best. And also, DO NOT BUY their Asian dishes, they're nothing like true Asian places. Why would you eat anything Asian in Santa Cruz when you can drive half an hour to San Jose to eat REAL Asian food.
Well the business doesn't revolve around the pho, they have 150 different meals and dishes to order. It isn't an asian restaurant and I think you would be stupid to judge it as such. They featured it on the show because when people think of a diner they aren't thinking of pho or spring rolls. The clip failed to mention much of anything else but the food is damn good and managed to get on the show.
Lol I luv Vietnam food. But I always risk myself cuz ime allergic to peanuts XD good news is it's not srs. Just get a slight itch after some peanuts
