@rishabhg1997 I used modo to build the models and LightWave 3D for the animation. You could do it all in LightWave 3D which is a good program to get started with 3D animation, though it does take quite a bit of work to learn.
This video makes me want to be a kid again. The sweet innocence and imagination of youth; if only there was still some more of it left as we grow older.
I used LightWave 3D. There's a complete list of hardware/software in the credits. I also go into what I used and how in my new book "Creating a 3D Animated CGI Short" which is available at my Telebites (dot com) web site.
cool animation but it really didn't make scents why the toy alien was the main character when it was about a little boys room... why not just us a boy character? i think it would have made it better...
Thanks for the kind words! This was a pilot for a potential series. To keep the production time low I used existing 3D assets whenever possible. I already had the 3D bed from when I designed the real one and I already had the 3D alien character that I had designed for a previous project so I used those. Since it was all in the boys imagination that was fine. If the series were to continue then I'd design a little boy character for the main character though. ;-)
Does your book cover how to do lighting that will get good results without gi flicker in lightwave on animated characters? Spinning light tricks on baked cg background Im guessing. I have a hard time getting good render time with no flicker.
Thanks! Yes the book covers how I handled the lighting. I showed various tests of different approaches and ended up using spinning lights. You can order the book at the Telebites web site.
@x3Heroiinex3 I used modo for modeling and LightWave 3D for everything else. I covered the process in my new book: Creating a 3D Animated CGI Short available at the Telebites website.
Thanks! It's based on the real BlastOff!™ Bed I designed for my son. Any parents interested in building one for their own little space cadet, the full plans are on the Special Edition DVD available at the Telebites Web site through the link under (more info) under the description of this video.

What software are you using because im trying to learn to animate myself. Youre work is awesome, you could become your own Dreamworks and be able to compete with them if you keep at it.
what did you use to make this because that is so great! i gotta hand it to you if you make more and more you will be a millionair no matter what :D :D :D
Outstanding short, Mike. You're a very talented artist and animator, plus you clearly have an insight into what is great about animation. The piece trangresses it's computer-generated roots, and has the charm and character of traditional line-based animation; i realise that this may sound a little cliché as the short has similarities to Toy Story, but i really think you're working at a professional level that bears striking resemblance to classic Pixar.
Good eye! Yes, that's because I created that FreeHand cover illustration for Macromedia and they used it for the FreeHand 5.5 through 7.0 branding. I also created the FreeHand, Director and Extreme 3D icons for their products at that time. Glad you noticed! -MikeS
hrhr... Yeah you did a great job here. And it is a cool idea... but i think there could be some thingies much better...
For example... while he is flyin through space his arms could stretch a little... or when he circles a corner, he could get pulled out of his "BlastOff" ( i think that is how the bed is called?) so that he drifts a little around through space ;)
which animation software did you use? Is it good for someone totally new to 3d animation??
