Awesome. Whether or not you fish these classics, they are serious "eye candy." I'd love to see you do a Jock Scott. The thing that sets your videos apart from the others on the web is that the quality of your video is great.
I have been trying to put a video together for a while but the problem I'm having is that I'm missing the points that most are looking for, the main reason is that I need two cameras to work from different angles to get the best results as I only have one so it's on the back burner at the moment until I can afford another...
Hi Davie, I too have been waiting for you to tie a classic salmon fly, and just as expected you didn't disappoint! The fly is beautiful, and the ease at which you tie it is amazing. I have just started to tie classics, after years of tying standard trout flies, and this one demonstration has helped more than all rhe books I've read to date. Thanks again for the video, and please keep the classics coming!
Hi Davie, I thank you for taking the time and effort to make the videos you have. I have learned allot. Any tips you could give on preparing the Pheasant Tippets would really be helpful.
When I'm choosing feathers I take one from either side of the collar and if it's a good one I just tye them on as they come off but if they are slightly mishaped by being in a packet then I'll steam them to bring them back to their natural shape. You'll find if you do this the black bars on the feather will line up nicely, remember the feathers have to be the same length...I hope this is of some help to you..
Always a pleasure to watch a true master at work, simply stunning. Thank you for passing on your knowledge. You are a great inspiration to us mere mortals.
Dave I noticed you used a couple of substitutions in here. Can you give us a list of materials please? Tell us what you use as a sub for the Blue Chatterer etc.
Also Dave why do they use the gut loops and not a standard bent eye hook?
I'll send you a link to the subs that you can use for both feathers I spoke about in the video...Gut was the original nylon of the time for both trout and salmon, the trout flies had a length of gut with a loop at the end and this was attached to the cast and the salmon flies were loop to loop. You'll find a lot more info on the internet on this as well..
Loved the video. Your camera work makes it so easy to follow along step by step, I often watch and pause your video's whilst I'm tying. Davie, tying classic salmon flies from the old books is sometimes hard as there is only materials and no method. I would love it if you could do the same treatment as you used for the Durham Ranger but for other syles of classic salmon patterns. Built wing, mixed wing. I and Mr Kelson would be so grateful.
I feel truly honored to be able to watch you Mr.McPhail tie with such ease of hand and grace of eye.If there is one thing I could have in this world(other than good health for me and the people I know) it would be the honor of shaking your hand and repaying you in some way for the knowledge you are bestowing to all who see the TRUE ART in what you do here.Thank you Sir and good health to you and yours.
This video makes me want to try tying classics once again. The classics are what made me convince my father to buy me a tying kit 15 years ago, and while I've tied thousands of flies my attempts at classics have always been lackluster. Seeing the techniques the way you present them makes it seem obtainable!
What a great fly! That just so happens to be THE fly that got me into classic tying. I would just want to thank you for telling me and giving me advice on were to find info on this style. This fly is just awesome. Beautifully tied to perfection!
Fly tying really is an art, there are men who are great salmon fishermen and are very secretive with their knowlage, as if other know the tactic will fail. Then there are those whos who will show the world so they can too profit from their countless days spent pursuing a fish that does not feed in freshwater. Davie you are a true ledgend of our sport, keep inspiring the world one video at a time! Amazing tying!
yet again davie you amaze all of us with your skills i thought i was doing well tying your blue charm salmon fly not even going 2 think about tackling this one cheers for your vids philie :)
Amazing man!!!! Hope one day i could manage to get these in shape as easily as you show them. I am learning all the time from your vids new ways to help my own fly tying tehcniques.
I were third on finnish masters on year 2001, after that had too long break and now getting it back on my fingers. Still need to learn proper salmon flies and man that´s hard. You know.
I've seen your flies and when I was fourteen I couldn't tye a knot so I'm sure if you keep tying the way your are then I would say easily that you are going to be a top class tyer no problem...
@DavieMcPhail Thanks for taking the time to look at the flies I have tyed, but i'm pretty sure you could tye a knot at the age fourteen! Thanks again for your comment and i look forward to any more of your videos.
I have been tying flies for over 28 years and to be honest with you I still have a lot to learn, these flies are a true tester of anyone's skill in tying but they can be great fun and very statisfying to do even with the time needed to tye them...
Wow...Davie, that is superb! - Can i ask you to tie a Carron Rabbit/Bunny? Doent require many materials - Tail flash,a rabbit strip, some chartreuse chenille and some flash for the sides of the wing
I would be happy to say that this fly would still catch fish today as much as it did many years ago, but it would be easier to tye them on eyed hooks rather than the one that I used...
I have been waiting for you to tie a classic salmon fly since I subscribed to your channel and I was not disappointed at all. Please continue doing more of these patterns as I truly love watching this art take shape.
Crackin' stuff Davie, thanks for making the time to make and edit this video. There's lots of fly tying vids on youtube, but very few classic salmon flies from start to finish.
amazing simply amazing Davie work of art as per usual what thread are you using there looks alot thinner than 8/0 been trying to do this for awhile now, now I know where I've been going wrong
