Thanks for the upload! This is always one of my go-to pieces for introducing friends to classical music. If the opening of this movement doesn't affect you... you're not human.
Esse concerto sempre me faz chorar mas nunca tinha visto uma gravação com tão boa qualidade de áudio e vídeo no youtube. Sobre a interpretação de Perlman, é, na minha opinião, a melhor que ouvi.
Played this concerto years ago and it still sends those shivers when it's executed flawlessly as is done by Perlman. Comparing it with Joshua Bell's performance, as great as he is a violinist, it's just not the same from the opening note - Perlman plays EVERY note with such passion and purpose that makes me want to pick up the instrument again and become a violin student all over again. And he does this without the extra "physical movement" that is so characteristic of Bell. BRAVO!
Absolutely fantastic! Perfect intonation, tone, cleanliness, rhythm, vibrato, dynamics, you name it! Orchestra is amazing as well! Undoubtedly the greatest Bruch performance ever! Possibly the greatest ANYTHING performance ever! BRAVO!
I love the conductor's enthusiasm. Even though this recording is about 10 years old it still sound crystal clear. This is my favorite violin concerto, and I absolutely refuse to listen to anyone other than Perlman play it (his rendition is the best).
Beautifully sound engineered; the Orchestra supports Mr. Itzhak Perlman like an Oyster shell supports a...Pearl. I guess this is the reason I can say "all is in a name". It compliments with its beauty his genius, and Max Bruch shows us how he suffered his musical expression: deep, voluptuos and trascendentally beautiful. Thanks so much for this rendition.
Trop de glissandos et de vibratos mielleux même si l'interprétation reste exceptionnelle. En comparant cette interprétation avec celle de Mr T Varga il est intéressant de voir que le phrasé de ce dernier est moins "vendeur" et plus profond
@Felicia Mirage: I am so excited for you! I picked it up at that age too, but I am going to go for it this time, and actually finish it. :) I was obsessed with Bach when I was thirteen. haha. partitas and duets are so much fun!
@Mecinimi: GAH! you are right. that was an elitist statement, but I meant it in the way that not many people pursue violin far enough to reach a level where they are technically ready to play Bruch. The select few in the way I meant it would be those who pursue it! Sorry for the poor diction and the misconception. :) and thank you for picking up on that. :)
I am 16 and learning to play this...only a select few will ever understand how difficult it is play Bruch...let alone make it seem effortless. :) I have much respect for Itzhak Perlman. I wish I were him!
@imareallyikeygirl Yeah, I'm 3 years younger than you, and I'M learning to play it, and you just took the words right out of my mouth! It's hard to make it seem effortless, especially the down bow cords. I love Itzhak! :D And I do understand how hard it is! But I still love the piece, it's beautiful! :D
Wow...I'm learning this one...and he has it all memorized! D: lawl, that part I'm not looking forwards to, but it is a beautiful piece, and Itzhak Perlman play it so exceptionally! Well done, Perlman.
he looks like he should be a bass player with those monstrously big hands... :) It's funny, in a way, that he can go from one note to another half a step above or below just by rotating his finger a little...no need for actual fingerings...
I cannot possibly describe the feeling that this performance gives me.
Somewhere along the lines of pure bliss, passion, anger, love, and beauty, all at once.
I do not usually cry during classical music, but Perlman's performance is one that touches the soul. I can only hope that his music lives on for millennia to come.
@cohataiv-This one of Perlman's is excellent, but Heifetz well-it's a little too fast for me. Check out Salvatore Accardo's on Philips @ Amazon.com, I think it's the Best of the Three.
I cannot listen to this piece without thinking of Tyler Clementi. He performed this at his final high school concert, and at its conclusion, there was not a dry eye in the audience. I'm so honored I was able to play it with him. He was such a beautiful person and his loss is a tragedy.
@Buddyluv484 I am so sorry your friend died in such a terrible way. Since reading your tribute I don't think I will ever hear this piece again without seeing in my mind's eye the photo we have all now seen of that sweet-looking tragic young man.
This video is my favourite and so is the music or the artist... As for Perlman, he plays with so much energy, go listen to schindler's list and other songs he plays. He's playing all songs with feeling, like he would live the music he plays. Like someone already said, he is a musical genious.
This concert makes me want to go play it right away =P. My point is that it's nice because of the parts (like really badass->a little more soft and so...).
Three bow strokes in and I'm fighting off tears, after I've both performed and listened to this piece countless times. Itzhak just can't be compared to. His musical voice is so far-reaching, I'm surprised there isn't some sort of space warp being ripped in the universe from such a performance.
It is amazing to see the accuracy of Perlman's fingers even though they are so large, one could presume he would be a cello or bass player. Fantastic performance, Joshua Bell can not yet be compared to a great such as Perlman.
look how bug his fingers are he is truly amazing because even a with small fingers a slightest roll of the tip of my finger makes a different that's why violin is so hard...
at 4:32 he probably forgot his accidental, even so, everyone has done that before in their lives, don't make such a big deal about it. Also, many of his intonation issues are minor to the point of nonexistant, your fishing for mistakes. This interpretation is resounding, i enjoy especially the beginning two ad libs. by Perlman. They are unique in that they are quieter than actually marked, but just as intense (if not more). Bravo Perlman Bravo!
I saw this performed by him live at the Concert to End Polio. The whole time, I was in disbelief that that man was actually sitting there on the stage, playing such incredible music. I thought I was dreaming.
That was a great performance of Itzhak Perlman. Bravo. Meanwhile, Conductor Kazuyoshi Akiyama will be conducting the Syracuse Symphony with the sensational pianist CECILE LICAD as soloist on February 12 and 13, 2010 in Syracuse, New York.
some sections are a little too rushed for my taste. but it was still very good. you can really tell he's feeling every moment of this piece though. something i could never do.
Thankyou Itzak and also orchestra, I am 35 years paralysed T5 and know a bit about how hard that would have been, and the musicianship is brilliant beyond words.
Bruch took as a model the greatest of them all Mendelssohn's violin concerto to write this gem, a work that gave him a well deserved place in this instrument history, it was premiered in 1866 and dedicated to the ultrafamous contemporary violinist Josep Joachim
This is a very nice video: great picture and superb sound quality. For me, this is indeed a great performance. There`s no pretension, over-indulgence or ego; he just plays the piece beautifully. Lovely facial expressions and such a wonderful, honest, expressive sound.
Trop de glissandos et de vibratos mielleux même si l'interprétation reste exceptionnelle. En comparant cette interprétation avec celle de Mr T Varga il est intéressant de voir que le phrasé de ce dernier est moins "vendeur" et plus profond
I disagreed. I likes hers a lot but I found it a little too agressive and choppy. I really enjoy Perlman's lyric passion without attacking the instrument.
He has a very nice expression like he's enjoying it. That's the difference from people who practices 10 hours per day. Or those who focus on one thing for the rest of their life....
The correct order is: Beethoven, Bruch (this one, he has two more) , Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Mendelsohnn, Dvorak, Saint-Saëns, Then a long long list. In piano concertos: first Brahms no.2, then Beethoven 5th op. 73, beethoven 4th,Tchaikovsky 1st, Brahms no.1, Mozart 20th...then a long list....
Hey, old man you left out Paganini's VCs, Joachim's VC#2, Wieniawski's VC#2, and Sarasate's "Zigeunerweisen"'. Technically, these are some the most difficult and some of the best. Your list is good, but Bruch's and Mendelssohn's are the most romantic!
You're absolutely right! But I think those ones are in the mention "Long List". This is a very personal opinion of mine and to other diletantti may be is not the correct order. Thank you for commenting.
The Long List in the Romantic period is longggg. So many good VCs. Speaking of PCs Long List, Chopin and Rachmaninov's PCs are definitely really good.
Agree. Rachmaninov's No. 2, op 18 is one of my favorites. I have an old version of this one with Vladimir Ashkenazy and LSO, Previn. It's quite great. Perhaps I should have enlisted it before Mozart' 20th. Chopin is also good, but I like more Beethoven's 3rd or even 1st than Chopin's concertos.
The Dvorak, Mendelssohn, and Bruch VC's seem to be the best of the romantic period. If I had to choose one of them, it would be this one. The feeling and emotion of this piece is spectactular and Perlman playing shines like no other. There are only a few violinists in the world that rival him. God Bless Bruch and Perlman........Truly Amazing........
I think you probably need to add the Beethoven and the Brahms to your list. The Beethoven is probably THE quintessential violin concerto. (Stern at his best has always been my favorite for the Brahms. I am not sure that he is always the most solid technically, but he is often my first choice followed closely by Perlman.)
Agreed. Consider Beethoven's VC more classical than romantic; very dramatic, love his stuff. Brahms is good, but not my favorite. Forgot Paganini; technically, nothing better; slow mvts are dramatic, but overall are more about playing than romanticism. As for violinists, too many to choose from, Heifetz, Milstein, Szeryng, Grumiaux, Oistrakh, Menhuin, Stern, and Hurwitz. New ones, Bell, Chang, Perlman, Zuckerman, Zimmermann, Standage, Accardo and the list goes on and on, matter of preference.
A superb violinist who I believe rivaled even Heifetz and Perlman, Franciscotti, Ricci etc.etc. for her performance of this Bruch Concerto is the (sadly) little remembered great Joan Field (now deceased) who recorded what I believe is the most sublime version of this concerto ever. Masterfully played with technical perfection combined with emotional phrasing that matches the composition and pure soul within every note. 1958 with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Albert Rudolph cond. Only on vinyl.
I am aware of Franciscotti, Ricci, and Field, but the problem with all of these older violinists is the recordings. It's not the playing, that's great, it's the quality of the recording; not in stereo, background noise, etc. I have Accardo's version of this concerto, on Philips, his playing is sublime and the recording is also.
Although of course recording technology especially for dynamics and clarity is much better now than it has ever been, for me it is the emotion in the playing that I care mostly about and some of those older players such as Joan Field just have no real comparison when it comes to true soul touching within some of the great compositions.
He is a genius.....

En comparant cette interprétation avec celle de Mr T Varga il est intéressant de voir que le phrasé de ce dernier est moins "vendeur" et plus profond
you have to compare that's all what i say!

73, beethoven 4th,Tchaikovsky 1st, Brahms no.1, Mozart 20th...then a long list....
alvarito45 3 years ago
Hey, old man you left out Paganini's VCs, Joachim's VC#2, Wieniawski's VC#2, and Sarasate's "Zigeunerweisen"'. Technically, these are some the most difficult and some of the best. Your list is good, but Bruch's and Mendelssohn's are the most romantic!
GeniusHaydn 2 years ago
You're absolutely right! But I think those ones are in the mention "Long List". This is a very personal opinion of mine and to other diletantti may be is not the correct order. Thank you for commenting.

The Long List in the Romantic period is longggg. So many good VCs. Speaking of PCs Long List, Chopin and Rachmaninov's PCs are definitely really good.
GeniusHaydn 2 years ago 3
Agree. Rachmaninov's No. 2, op 18 is one of my favorites. I have an old version of this one with Vladimir Ashkenazy and LSO, Previn. It's quite great. Perhaps I should have enlisted it before Mozart' 20th. Chopin is also good, but I like more Beethoven's 3rd or even 1st than Chopin's concertos.
alvarito45 2 years ago

FAHayek89 3 years ago

Classikev 3 years ago
I am aware of Franciscotti, Ricci, and Field, but the problem with all of these older violinists is the recordings. It's not the playing, that's great, it's the quality of the recording; not in stereo, background noise, etc. I have Accardo's version of this concerto, on Philips, his playing is sublime and the recording is also.
GeniusHaydn 3 years ago
Although of course recording technology especially for dynamics and clarity is much better now than it has ever been, for me it is the emotion in the playing that I care mostly about and some of those older players such as Joan Field just have no real comparison when it comes to true soul touching within some of the great compositions.
