  • Quickscoping must hurt D:

  • what if you break your neck in training or something? Can't play the game anymore?

  • 1:50 lol fail

  • I think people will find their necks getting sore after a while though

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Omg looks so amazing. I want to try this so bad now.

  • 360 no-scopes will break your neck!

  • Mac?

  • Genius! great work!

  • This technology doesn't work on black people yet. WTF!

  • hoping u can help. im looking for head tracking as a mouse replacement for universal fps gaming. i only have one hand and cant use mouse

  • Will this work with multiple WebCams?

Speaking of which, I found two WebCams, but they appear to be rather crappy ones. It is a Compucessory WebCam, not exactly the best around.

  • 9 people don't have a webcam (not including me, because I actually like this)

  • such a real person in the game ;)

  • This will take a while to get use to.

    BUT IT WILL BE AWESOME.

  • Hmmm... This will probably be used for pron-games :O

  • You have furious eyebrows

  • so is this also 3D?

  • THE OLD HALF LIFE FTW!!!

  • aaand this is how playing games will become a dangerous work :P.

OMG i twisted my neck again DX!.

  • @Tatsuya91 We can always ask him to update and switch from FaceAPI to FaceLAB

FaceLAB is maed by the same people as FaceAPI, and it also has Eye Tracking. But I think it costs money and uses ALOT of CPU.

  • I will stick to the mouse and keyboard. This technology is good for the airforce and they are already using this tech in some of their advance weapon systems.

  • This would be utterly crap for FPS. You'd get whiplash and a headache.

However this may be interesting for say facial gestures for your avatar in a game.

  • as retarded as this may sound but it is this real or a piss take?

  • At first I thought it was gonna be funny like awkward sexual head gestures..

  • That looks so awkward.

  • If you guys could integrate this maybe as what games see as a control pad, it would be very convenient. I play tactical shooters competitively, so all of these would help substantially.

  • do you need a special computer?or just a eyecam?

  • Baddy

  • would suck to get whiplash lol

  • I can't see myself using headtracking gestures for scoping, but being able to lean for example is huuugely helpful. You really can't afford to use up 2 easily accessible buttons for leaning usually, and you typically won't lean so frequently that you will strain your neck. Its perfect.

For slower-paced games like first-person adventure or puzzle, I really really love the pseudo-3D too. That is really impressive and should really be standard in everything. Headtracking is very underused.

  • lol neckpain ensures :3

  • my school has those computers. im actually ore shocked you can play source games on those things, then by what the video is actually about... maybe that is just me, but those computers ARE SHIT.

  • Too bad I have a big nose. :/

  • I find myself doing this in games by accident

  • 1:48 FAIL jajaja xD

  • its kinda gey

  • wow, this needs to be a part of next gen games

  • I think whats amazing about this head tracking system is it does not require any special tracking equipment, or any equipment modding. It works on standard web cams which are readily available and even come with may pc these days. I also think its great to add the ability to interact with head motion, quick turns, and spying around corners. This makes it more than just a cool addon but an actual means of bringing the game to life.

  • Man you now should work at some gaming desing right?

This is just fucking amazing, someone should contract you.

  • ok.. now i have installed and reinstalled and rebooted my pc 5 times and nothing is working.. i can use faceoff.. but that little mod that you show here i cannot use no matter how i do it.. please help me..(i have source sdk+source sdk base 2006+source sdk base 2007 installed at all times..)

  • One person used an Inferior WebCam to do this. Click on the Video Response by TrueChaser.

  • this'll be AWESOME if used by GMOD machinima, no more face poser, or anything

  • @pkeropl0x that's not what this is about at all

  • i like the looking-through-a-window thing, i even find myself trying to do that sometimes. i think this will be good in the future if integrated into the OS itself, or a popular game engine (source :P). it just can't be turned into a gimmick though, just used to complement what already exists. i don't want to shake my head around all the time ^^

  • Head gestures isn't that great on a fixed screen. At best it acts like a few more mouse/key buttons. At the end of the day you still have to look strait at your screen right? Head tracking with helmet display would probably make more sense though.

  • I Imagined if I'm in an intense fight, I'd move my head so hard like I'm in a seizure or something.

  • Wow those are some great ideas. I think the most useful would be the peaking around corners. In alot of games peaking around corners is very annoying and have to take my fingers off the main keys i use on the keyboard. great work. id love to see this tech intergrated in videogames

  • TUTORIAL?!!

  • I don't think you'd see the 'spinning', 'ironsighting' or other repeated and quick gestures. However, it would be good to have this as a general way of adding to the immersion of the game, and allow for players to see more of what is going on by moving their head instead of the mouse.

  • Isn't aiming with ironsights the same gesture as peering around corners? anyway, i just hope it hits mainstream soon. finally a reason to get a decent webcam.

  • Since I saw that HeadTracking device for racing games, I was wondering why the hell there was no games that uses webcams instead. Nice to see that someone actually developed this stuff.

  • We can quickly develop RSI in our necks and shoulders!

  • Think if they combined this and 3D TVs... yeah, mind blowing isn't it?

  • Really very nice indeed, it would be awesome if the future titles would benefit from such interaction.

  • does it works for fsx??

  • the whole fast neck movement thing to spin around promotes injuries.

  • @spermcubearchives - sure it does if you have a stiff neck.

  • wow that is realy cool!

  • How does this compare to microsoft kinect. pros/cons?

  • @DarkKnightBob1o1 Besides being cheaper and more technically advanced? (When it comes to facial recognition/tracking)

  • When Is the new version coming out?

  • @MrComputerizer lol i was just about to ask that but then i went i site & its UP :D:D:D:D

  • very good but you sound and look a bit funny :P trying to seem too professional/informative

  • aw cant download any1 have a site u can download games that uses faceapi

  • This is all just creature feep.

  • didnt work for me =/ tried with half life aswell =/

  • it's cool off course but it wouldn't go into game industry as after playing a bit your neck would hurt

  • EPIC!!!!

  • Ugh... that was sloooow...

NaturalPoint REMOVE com is like a gazillion times faster without even regestring on the CPU

  • Iss there a chance that i can import this mod to other source games like hl2 or hls...or importing the maps and props 2 the mod so i can use it on hl2 maps?

  • Is this a good supplement for TrackIR in flight sim games? Or is it slower and less precise?

  • I think this technology is better than nvidia 3d. and its cheap

  • cool!

  • where is my games located on steam??

  • How exactly do I get this working? I have everything installed (I think), and I put everyhting in the correct folders, and I can run HL2 flawlessly. I can turn it on and it get's to the main menu and everything, but I click the "Load test map" button and it loads, but sends me back to the main menu. The "head tracking options" doesn't do anything either. I tried loading another map from HL:S but that did the same.I THINK it might be the IPP runtime not installing correctly, but I'm not sure.

  • @bCrypt19 I have the same problem!! I cant figure out how to fix that... Someone please help us!

  • so this also comes in gran turismo 5?

  • Hi...Can you use it in original HL2? I downloaded your soft from moddb, but all i can play is the test map...thanks for reply..

  • For some reason when i run it it crashes -.-

  • how do i use this for head tracking in games as opposed to using IR head tracking?

  • Found my problem, nothing related on the FAQ but after I uninstalled webcammax it started working, maybe it was trying to load the real webcam and webcammax at the same time

  • Nah, even though I have an HP Mini with a built in webcam, and Windows 7, I don't think I like this idea. Reminds to much of my Wii FPS games I play..the controls are like trying to learn how to make a space-ship that can fly to Pluto 5 times over, each time making it in a diffrent way, the space-ship also has to let the people inside survive, and somehow give them magic food and water. Yes, they are that hard.

  • I think I just had multiple chronic orgasms

  • can this work on windows 7

  • indeed it does @gamer3386

  • Can this be integrated with the Existing source titles? For example, can I use this in TF2 to quickly zoom in as a sniper?

  • Unfortunately @stevoisiak it can't, given that, like those games, it itself is a mod. If we could convince Valve to put it into the actual Source engine we would be sorted :D

  • @torbensko

I thought not. Ah well. It's still awesome. :D

  • @torbensko couldnt those gestures integrated by macros?? that the programm recognizes that you bend your head to the site and tells the game that you presse the right mouse button???

    this should solve the problem

ps: i played the crysis 2 demo and it could be played in 3d with glasses

could it be transfered to headtracking?

  • nice

  • When I enter the game I get a black screen after the Valve logo

    XP64 here

  • is this for the mac to. cause my mac is the only computer i have that has a webcam

  • -.- When I enter my mail and click the download button i just get this

Fatal error: Call to undefined function sendhtmlemail() in /home/tor49061/public_html/software/head_tracking/index.php on line 78

  • Cheers for letting me know @Torchaan. The site is work again, so just try downloading it again.

  • it could be better. you can't be fat enough with these techniques. plus neck pains

  • It's an interesting idea but far too inconvenient. You'd have to sit in various stiff positions to make the best use of this, and no doubt this will cause neck pain

  • Does this only work on Half Life?

  • can i use it for il-2?

  • Help me!

I install it and i have source SDK and base but when i install it with full its not in my gamees tab

  • you guys should get hired... about time it comes to our games of today...

  • Torbensko or somone please help, i have half life 2, i got source sdk and source sdk base, i downloaded this off your website, and i installed it just like you said, in my games tab its there clear as day, and it launches ok. but when i get to the main screen, i cant click on head tracking settings or play test level, in the console when i click settings it says somthing like "invalid command "toggleheadtrackingpanal""

    i really wanna play this:(

Oh and im useing a built in webcam on my laptop:(

  • @NicolieFrixon

he uses a modded hl2, u can't do all that crap in the the original

  • @Rolofgild1337 What mod? im sure i could get it if i knew :(

  • City 17: Episode 1 mod?

  • this rly opens a whole different world of gameplay =O

  • well your tactical manouver failed didnt it

  • Kaputt

  • What would be the difference between ironsighting and peering?

  • @acannon912 in HL2 you cannot zoom (peering) and shoot, that's why

  • This is what some say Natal is being used for in Halo Reach. I hope so because that would be beast.

  • This is really awesome. I'm definitely going to try it out.

  • That's pretty awesome!

  • you should really think of using this software for headtracking in Microsoft flight simulator or IL-2 Sturmovik, it would be so much better than with FPS.

  • Make sure you have Source SDK, which can be obtained free to any PURCHASER of any Source games. I recomend CS:S for a game you will actually play and Day of Defeat if you just want to get Source SDK. That will clear up a lot of things to others.

  • thats very cool

  • Here is the thing I don't like I can be moving my head for something not related to the game. It could kind of screw me up. Unless it has some control to shut the head motion off at a push of a button.

  • those walkcycle looks sooo real ....

  • I have a problem with downloading the software. When I get the email the link doesn't work. I know the link will go inactive in time, but it seems not to even activate for me :( Please help, I really want to use the software, but I can't download...

  • nevermind, I got it now...

  • Uhhh... I don't know how I can help because I just tried many times 'till I finally got it :P

  • So, I was playing grid using the driver perspective and just realized that something like this could be used to controle the driver perspective, since using the right analog stick do control his head sucks... Can I use it to act like an right analog controller?

  • Nice..

  • I'd like to know a few things:

    A) Can this be used as an alternative to TrackIR?

    B) Can the direction or position of the face be easily mapped to keyboard/mouse commands?

    C) In comparison to TrackIR, how fast can the program translate into in-game movement?

    D) Would this program do better with an HD camera, rather than a generic 1.3mp camera?

  • Can the head gestures work in Left 4 Dead?

if it work, How i do it with another source games?

  • Check out the FAQ on my site. It offers several solutions.

  • hmm, this is some fancy shit, but kinda ruin the gaming, when your gaming u gonna be relaxed, not gonna have to move around to make the game go on, but its cool ^^

  • once you play with it for a while, it becomes surprisingly natural, especially now that I've refined it further.

  • It's funny that people have to ask if things are free these days. People, the majority of programs on the PC have always been free. This isn't the monopolized consoles where they charge you for everything they can get away with.

  • i dont get it.... i cant configure the settings.... i need a good tutorial

  • This is actually pretty cool. Is it free?

  • Yep. There's a download on my site (I would post the url, but youtube blocks them. Just google Torben Sko, shouldn't be too hard to find)

  • does this work for il2?

  • No, but if you had the source code for that game, it would be pretty easy to integrate it.

  • will this work with fsx or lock on? or cod 4?

  • It needs to be integrated into the engine, so theoretically it could be done, but the developers of those games would need to do it.

  • So FaceAPI can't record the movement seen like how you did with Breen in the other video and export it as a file that any sort of program like a 3D Animation program can recognize? There must be SOME way aside having to be Valve.

  • wow thats awesome1

  • its realy so oswam how can i get this software

  • From my website (google Torben Sko and you should be able to find it pretty easily)

  • nice, so if they develop this more, you'll have to actually move like a crazy in FPS games and stuff like that... which also mean fit people will pwn while fat ones like me wont keep their 15/1 kill ratio scores -.-

  • the fat people would still own you because they'll be playing the game much more than you.

  • most gamers arent fat especially pc gamers

  • Are you sure about that?

Joking aside, how much effort does it honestly take to move your head? Plus, the system can be made to work off very subtle movements, so it's a lot less effort then using a Wii

  • @torbensko

This "invention" makes players "reaction tim" much bigger than just a mouse.

Why should we use that? No point of all. This is good for players who seeks fun

  • @CSSFusi I think you just answered your own question..?

  • freakin` awesome duude!

  • Johnny Lee was recently hired to work on project Natal. Ergo, we can extrapolate that Halo: Reach is going to have the "window effect," which, as you can see, fucking owns, and works ALONG WITH a normal controller, so no worries! Once Sony sees how awesome this tech is, they will relaunch the Playstation eye to be used for head tracking as well, so everyone wins!

Face and body tracking is the next level of immersion in gaming, and stuff like this is ground zero for making it happen.

    This owns.

  • Crazy-Awesome!

  • haha so stupid my neck would explode by the time i complete a game...lets stick to a controller shall we?

  • Maybe I have a strong neck, but I've yet to get any strain from using head control (apart from possibly the spinning technique, but then again, that one sucks).

The movements in the video are "emphasised" for the sake of demonstration. It can actually work off very subtle movements.

  • I thought just the face movment trackign was cool :D

Being a 3d effects artist i could see tons of things this could be used for...

However the use of this in games is seriously cool :D

  • excellent video

  • Brilliant!

  • Installed everything, can't find it in "my games"

  • Check out the FAQ on my site. Hopefully that should help you.

  • 1.28 lol

  • This is bananas, i need to try it out...

  • Good work you've done here, but how will my neck feel after a 3+ hour gaming session?

  • It depends in if you normally use those muscles. One thing is for certain, it will show you how little you use your head normally. Once you get used to it though, i guess it would become natural. Playing games on mouse and keyboard cramps my hands in minutes, but regular users have no such problems.

  • would be good if we could use do the gestures on America arms that you do without voice comands to avoid detection. You know the tactics in the game like lifting your hand to give order to your team mates stop.

  • Amazing.

  • Pretty great. I can see a bright future for you =)

Essentially what trackIR/freetrack does except without using leds. I hope this gets integrated into as many games as possible.

  • That was great, I'm just wondering how long it will take till microsoft come knocking at your door offering you a job..

great work, hope you get a first with this project..

  • I'm afraid I'll pull a neck muscle in the heat of the action

  • @ TomQue -

I'm in agreement with what you are saying, but, if a 'activate' key/button was present then accident movement would be eliminated, i have the feeling that although in theory these could work very well in games, it could also ruin experiences if not implemented creativley, for instance in a Call of Duty game there would be far too much going on for it too work, but in a House of the Dead game it would absolutely ROCK!!!!!

  • amazing work!

  • I can picture my neck becoming very sore.

  • The movements are exaggerated for the sake of demonstration. You can actually get away with very subtle head movements.

  • If subtle movements are enough to trigger action in-game, wouldn't you have to be completely still, and might accidentally trigger what you don't want to?

  • HOLY CRAP! This is cool!

I used to work with Source, nice work! The Source SDK aint easy, so congrats on this sweet level of implementation!

Those guys from Project Nathal should totally hire you!
