  • I find the lack of likes disturbing.

  • I just got a nostalgia trip from watching this, as I was just reminded of the opening scroll from Dark Forces.

  • I have a suggestion, since you did Star Wars so well, doing it justice with the Imperial March, I was thinking maybe a Halo attempt? :P But that's just me, I'm a Halo geek and Star Wars geek.

  • Sound like a mix of hard rock and 8-bit

  • @CANTBEASSEDEDDY really because it reminds me of star wars

  • So fucking cute

  • I love this. I seriously do. Shared with friends all over the world. Just wish the sound was a bit better. This is the most amazing use of floppies ever devised. Even better than use as a storage medium.

  • @theardentone Awesome! I'm glad you like it (and thanks for sharing it). The sound is indeed a work-in-progress. It's definitely a bit better on my later videos (I ditched the mixer that was causing all that noise).

  • @Sammy1Am lol it took me 20 seconds to notice that thats star wars xD great video man!

  • I laughed so hard, perfectly done

  • How long does it take to finish?

  • Fucking awesome sauce.........

  • pleas say, how to develop music for a floppy drivers I can't really find it in google

  • @tavitjjj There's a link to a video tutorial for building the drives in the doobly-doo.

As for the music itself, the software reads MIDI files. Each MIDI channel (1-8) is sent to one drive (1-8). The drives have a range of C1-B4. It takes a little bit of fiddling with to get the music to sound best on the drives, but that's the basics.

  • Windows NT?

  • this is frigging sweet dude...mad props.

  • "Uh oh, I'm afraid my floppy drives might be turning to the dark side of the force..." hahaha ur the main man man! u got real big cojones :)

  • who has the FUCKEN TIME to do this?!

  • @david1991rules4life The same sort of people that have time to use a marble fired from a balloon to break a fish-tank. ;) Everyone's got hobbies, mine's just really nerdy.

  • @Sammy1Am the same sort? oh no you're mistaken, mine is simple and takes less than 3 minutes to make if you're quick, so no, there was no "time on my hands" to make that, very little in fact ;)

  • @david1991rules4life I would like to see that.

  • @OKISIROKI HAHAHAHA step 1. cut a 2L soft drink botle for the end hole and some plastic for cover step 2. cut off neck of balloon step 3. put balloon on the end step 4. get elsatic band and wrap it tightly over the balloon on the bottle. it can be done in less than 3 mins, duhhh

  • @Sammy1Am yer 9 ppl are fucking half wits, my videos are not even time consuimg, very short! get it into your head idiot ppl!

  • @Sammy1Am Good answer bud

  • Somehow I feel these will be great with dubstep. :D

  • I got another dead floppy drive (the head is magnetized), ask me if you want to use it.

  • @bpmagruder I've got plenty of drives for my needs right now. There is a very small chance that a future project might require unreasonably large numbers of floppy drives; if that happens I'll send out a call for donations. Thanks for the offer though! =)

  • EPIC!!!

  • 19 people tried to make music with their USBs and failed

  • 19 peoples are USB key

  • Come to the dork side... we have pi.

  • The nerdcore is strong with this one...

  • My fav. the there sounds like a lot more texture to it opposed to others here on Youtube

  • ha ha ha! i think you've got the tesla coils beat!

  • @lexichronicle2 I don't know... floppy drives are a lot less dangerous which makes them inherently slightly less cool than a musical tesla coil I think. =P

  • @Sammy1Am I don't really agree. Tesla coils are EXTREMELY loud, but don't sound nearly as sinister (in a youtube video anyway) as these. I'm more inclined to judge instruments on their musical qualities.

  • @Sammy1Am can you do led zeppelin - kashmir?

  • Play on the dark side by john cafferty and the beaver brown band.

  • thumps up if you seen this more than 2 times x'D

  • Your floppies are turning to the dark side!!!

  • These aren't the drives you were looking for.

  • dda fuck is this ?

  • this is the start of the robot invasion. What's next, the terminator appearing from nowhere O_O

  • like it! very cool! thx!

  • Two drives at top left look like C3PO.

  • do mario!

  • I only have enough space on my Adrunio Uno for 5 drives. how did you get 8?

  • @grant2053 You can use the analog pins as digital-out pins.

  • @grant2053 There should be room for 6 on the digital I/O pins up top (pins 2-13) and then the analog pins (A0-A3) double as digital I/O pins.

  • Very cool!!!

  • WOW!!! I have 10 spare floppy drives and this is how I am going to use them!!!! genius!! LOL

  • @grouchypus Do it! Post videos!

  • @Sammy1Am I am the only question is what songs.....

  • @grouchypus Heh, if you're looking for ideas, just trawl the comments on my videos a bit. There's a TON of suggestions, and a lot of them would be pretty awesome. 8-bit video game music is a good place to start though.

  • 15 человек полные ебланы!

15 people is full fucking idiots

  • @Razdavajko A self-translating comment! I love it!

  • @Sammy1Am

Это удобно. Русский не все знают, а английский известен множеству.

This is handy. Not everyone knows Russian, but English known for many. ;)

  • Holy crap! O_O

  • Sounds like my neighbor's singing tesla coil.

  • Looks like the boa for my viola moving up and down

  • George Lucas saw this the other day. He chuckled that "Williams is going to flip his shit when I email him this". Everyone at the office got a good laugh out of it. Great video.

  • this truly is the future of music! one day i envision entire orchestra pits filled to the brim with floppy drives, rock bands will be FedExed from concert to concert in medium sized boxes and the current generation of "pop singers" will be able to drop the auto-tuneing pretence and be entirely computer generated!

  • @deathscreton Dude, It was a joke. It wasnt even directed towards you.

  • Through the fire and the flames, please.

:D Great stuff, I wish I knew how to program these things.

  • I sense the virgin is strong with this one...

  • @Burgert3067 I sense the asshole is large in this one.

  • I love you for doing this with your life!

  • Luke, I am your CPU !

  • Im sensing 14 Jellous Jedis among us!

  • this is just EPIC ! :)

  • << удивлению нет предела !

  • Next song - "Smoke on the water" please )

  • Sounds like a bunch of really pissed of minimoog's.

  • Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow!!!!!! Amazing job man!

  • guiles theme from street fighter is a must with floppies =P

  • Hmmmm, someone should make a complete orchestra with floppies :D

  • @computerfreakDK Opera :3, 5hs? YEAH!

  • i just come (a) <3

  • Cool

  • Make skyrim main theme song! :D

  • March of the Floppies sounds like some sort of anti-Viagra protest XD

  • When your computer starts making these sounds you know you should leave the building.. instantly..

  • 240p for better sound :D

  • Just reminded me my first big PC game, X wing, was on... many floppies! Those were nice times...

@Sammy1Am: Just being a bit of a perfectionnist, it is the use, in an orchestra, that the violins playing the same tune actually have the same bowing ("coup d'archet" in French). Not for the sound (yes, a bit), but more for the visual and the style. Maybe your floppy drives should have agreed on that first ;-)

    Great tune, great cover nevertheless.

  • @wslihgt I remember X-Wing! I had the demo that I think came on a Chrysler promo CD... weird...

Violins have an advantage in that they do not need to move their bows at a different speed for different pitches, the floppies unfortunately do. I've thought about how I might do the same with the drives (and thanks to you I have a name for it now), but so far nothing works very well. I won't give up thinking though!

    Thanks for the comment. =)

  • @Sammy1Am you're welcome!

A simple idea would be to have all the hard drive to start with the moving device at the same place? At least the ones playing the same tunes would look synchronized. Is it possible?

  • @wslihgt The trouble is, they already all start in the same place, but as soon as they play a different pitch, they start to drift (watch the bottom-left two drives in this video; they're playing the exact same rhythm, but in harmony so they start to drift apart). I can't just reset the drives part way through because there's no way for them to "pick-up their bow" so any movement will generate noise.

I think the best I can hope for is some choreography where they play in circles or waves.

  • @wslihgt i have a brand new unopened copy of xwirng. and tie fighter for "ibm compatibles" lol. i wonder how much it would retail nowadays...

  • @thellt1 damn typos...

  • So ... this are the floppys where the Deathstar-plans were on ....

  • They are back... They want to destroy the DVDs, CDs and BluRays...

    Run, for fuck's sake!

  • So I'm going to assume there's an pre-written application that tells the drive how to make each note?

  • @DamagedF0X It's actually reading MIDI files and sending the data to the drives (the source is available at the link in the doobly-doo). =)

  • @Sammy1Am Do you watch WheezyWaiter, by any chance?

  • @LegoFreakFarter Did the WheezyWaiter Wink video I did give it away? ;)

  • @Sammy1Am Possibly....

  • this is what the computers are thinking when u walk into the labs at leeds met.....

  • Can you do the tetris theme?

  • hahaha It sounds like the sound system in a Sega Genesis

  • whats on the disks?

  • @freakomation Nothing or something. It doesn't matter. The drives searching the disk is all that matters, and that is done by the computer.

  • @freakomation As @WishinToBeMau5 said, it's not terribly important. In this particular case, there aren't disks in the drives at all (they tend to dampen the sound).

  • @Sammy1Am How hard would you say it is to program something like this?

  • @freakomation Well if you're looking to do exactly this, all of my code is available at the link in the doobly-doo. Something LIKE this though is not too difficult. The Arduino makes it super easy to interface with hardware, the trickier part was figuring out how to read MIDI files in Java, and how to get the drives to sound decent (the latter is just lots of experimentation though, nothing difficult).
