  • Im not too hot on country, but i love John 5's cover of this.

  • Chet is the guitar God of all guitar gods!

  • @gombakhillbillies

I agree with you on that the greatest picker of all time. He did consider one other country musician to be an equal and that was Jerry Reed, a phonemonal picker but even he said he paled next to Chet,

  • Chet may have stood on the shoulders of giants, but he took their art to the penultimate. I have listened to this tune by everyone I can find, including that master himself, Hank Garland, who I believe wrote it. I have listened over and over.

Chet's is the only absolutely perfect version.

My brother and I are planning to fly to his gravesite this summer to pay homage to the one and only "Mister Guitar."

  • @jwills8606 Penultimate means next to last. Just sayin'.

  • @w9j15g

Thanks for the heads-up. You are absolutely correct. I used a reference to order rather than ability. My bad.

  • I agree that Junior Brown's version is brilliant as well. He takes it in another direction, but he can get away with it because he is also the real deal. I love Chet though and don't forget about Jerry Reed. They are all in a class of thier own.

  • Assuming one of the "Sugarfoot Rag"s Chet recorded in the sixties, he was playing a heavily modified Gretsch. He didn't switch his endorsement until 1979.

  • what kind of guitar does chet atkins play?

  • He either played a Gretch, or after he severed ties with Gretch he play a Gibson until hi death.

  • @thrashmetal1029

He could play a rubber band and I'd still listen.

  • Brilliant!

  • Nobody beats Junior Browns version of this song! Nobody

  • agree! but brent mason's version kicks ass too...

  • John 5 does

  • john5 dude

  • @mikeseank

Well - Doc Watson and Hank Garland (composer) kinda both nailed it...but Doc's flat picking version with Duane Eddy on 'lectric is my personal favourite when they incorporated it into Thunder Road. (Docabilly) "course the fact is that Sugarfoot Rag is the key to opening the door in the Hall of Guitar Greats.

    Cheers

    NF

  • @mikeseank Jerry Reed does a pretty good version as well,. though it's not just his guitar that does the work.

  • @mikeseank hank garland beats junior brown by a mile

  • @mikeseank Word up brother! Junior is THE man! I love all the other versions but Junior goes beyond 'em all. Even John 5.

  • @mikeseank Brent Mason´s a kickass version too!

  • @mikeseank beg to differ.

  • Would have loved hearing Hank and Chet play this song together... : )

  • AMEN!!!!!

  • As always, Chet shines in the forefront here, but full kudos to the great Anita Kerr for her arrangement and the backing of the " Anita Kerr Singers "

  • Well, Chet is God

Check One of his little Angels Hank Garland playing this

  • i can play this song on my guitar my guitar teacher loves chet atkins so he taught me this and i love it but im not as good as them

  • Thank you!

  • Excellent cover by Chet on Hank Garland`s song.

    5/5

  • Actually, that is Jesse Colter, Waylon Waylon Jennings's wife. Chet discovered and produced Waylon.

    Daff

  • @daffydoug I think you'll find that Waylon Jennings was discovered by "Buddy Holly"!

  • @daffydoug Hmm... didn't Buddy Holly first discover, and then produced some of his first songs from what I've read

  • Wow, this is great old stuff! Is that Chet's wife sitting next to him? Neat picture.
