that is gmod, its acctualy better, if you think about it, medical training, building, learning how to construct, all great ideas are packed in this game and in minds of players. i play this myself and it helps me think about my community and learning. this is all thanks to garrys mod creator Garry Newman, he is a friend(not close friend) of mine.

actually there are model packs that give u those models, like they used for houses and the maze.

Yea, actually, you can do a LOT in garry's mod as there have been numerous model packs that provide all sorts of things. There's phx models, primitive mechanics, and another big model pack off hand that provides lots of generic square shapes with textures that look like housing stuff that they used to make those houses. In fact, I doubt they used hammer at all except to make the large flat grass area, unless it's gm_flatgrass or similar.
