@animeswordsgirl no, it's not bad at all. Hermit crabs aren't very vocal animals to begin with, and the only time they DO chirp [i've read] is when they feel threatened and need/want help from the colony.

@springfairy556 he might be angry, hmmm what substrate (like sand, gravel) do you have, whats the tempature/humidity, are there other crabs in the tank. if you have sand 70F for the heat, and about 60ish for the humidity and there are other crabs with him, he's just chirping for the heck of it

@Kayladiva197 Purple Pinchers do chirp but only when they are scared, bothered, having a shell fight, and other bad things. Ecuadorians, Strawberries, etc. chirp usually to communicate to other crabs as well as when being aggressive, scared, or having a shell fight.

if they chirp that means they are stressed or unhappy... my dying hermit did that. Her name was manco. she died like 2 weeks ago on day 6 of molting :( it was interesting to watch her limbs go back though. I miss manco. now, Mack is lonely so he is with my sisters and my friends hermit that they can't care of .

@2r7jds I get sick and tired of hearing people going on about painted shells. No, they're not the best for your crab. But they're not as deadly as the PETA freaks make it out to be. I've had hermit crabs as pets for fourteen years, some painted, some not. I've never lost a crab at a young age who had a painted shell. Bottom of the line is only some paints are toxic and even so they don't often find chips to ingest it.

Teddy (one of my hermits) was playing on top of my laptop when the audio came through the built in speakers and he just stopped dead in his tracks cuz he was so confused. I felt bad when I saw the end and saw that chirping is an agressive noise. Teddy is a bit of a scardy cat too. My poor baby.

Painted shell are harmful to your hermit crab. You should put some unpaint shells and i bet the hermit crab will like the natual shell natually.

I used to have a dozen of them for pets and they chirp quiet noisily at night. Chirping is also a good indication that the crab is healthy. BTW, don't use painted shells.

Not necessarily. It's probably a dominance thing. One of my female Ecuadorians did this to all the other Ecuadorians, but the last one she climbed on (now the alpha male of my tank) gently knocked her off. As long as there's no violence or actual aggression (as opposed to passive-aggression) chirping is nothing to fear, and is quite neat.

To the last person who commented this: It's a sound of aggrivation. They make it when they are being attacked or when another crab is trying to take it's shell. It's their way of saying "Get the fuck off me D:<"

@TheSkyWhale You're not supposed to have only one hermit crab. It can make them depressed and very stressed out. Hermit crabs naturally live with at the very LEAST 1 other hermit crab. In the wild they can be seen crossing the beach with 100 or more other hermits. It isn't good to keep them alone.

My hermit crab, Cedar (who recently passed away) had a really loud chirp. I called the 'bullhorn'. He used to chirp when he was happy, which is weird. I would be just about to fall asleep and then... I hear a hermit crab chirping!!! I would run over to the cage to make sure everyone is okay... and there he would be, chirping for joy at the sight of a cheerio. Ah, I miss him
