Nice setup. You might reduce the offsetting of the alignment by moving the paper up closer to the arms (put a spacer of some sort, like a box, beneath the paper) and use a smaller pen as the current one will probably not be stable if it is held lower.
It is connected to an arduino. That's what's translating the inputs from the pots into commands to the steppers. The reason I can't do more complicated drawings is because of the surface friction between the pen and the paper throwing off the alignment.

connect it to an arduino board and you'll be able to do much more complicated drawings.
