I think when artists start out they usually have more to say musically, primarily because they bring their own individual stamp of music which the public hasn't heard before. After the freshness wears out there is a tendency to repeat oneself stylistically. It's a bit unreasonable to expect even the best of artists to duplicate the success of their halcyon days.
