..cont... The person climbing on top of the truck likely gained a static charge buildup from walking about and climbing up and discharged when he leaned over. Boom.
I haven't read all the comments, but here is my non-expert hypothesis:
You will note that there is a hose laying on the ground that is connected to the tanks. You'll also notice that this is (as usual) a covered area. Who knows how long this hose has been here but when you get to the end of the video you will see flames at the hose. I suspect that the hose was left in position venting vapors for some time which collected under the covered area which provided a nice vapor-rich atmosphere..cont
@DeathTouch He may have tried using the phone's backlight to see something? And then someone probably called. I'm just saying if it was a phone, but obviously we don't know for sure what the dumbass did to make this explosion.
@DeathTouch It wasn't a phone. He was looking into the tank and using a cigarette lights as a light source. Needless to say, fire and gas fumes are extremely explosive.
well, cellphones don't create that much static electricity; your clothes do. that's why it's not advisable to get in and out of your car while filling up for gas, and why you should always touch your car's metal body first before going near any gas fumes to discharge any static electricity build up. cell phones can't cause explosions people.
actually they can. You just saw it. We use this video for training and the bloke here used his mobile to shine a light into the tanker. BOOM> we also had it at one of our factories. a bloke didn't take his phone out of his pocket when going into an explosive atmosphere. someone called him, he is no longer with us, and neither is most of the factory.
anyone notice how many stupid things people do at petrol stations. driving in way too fast, drive in from wrong side (theres an entry for a reason, there are barricades before each pump to prevent you driving into it), cells arent allowed allowed because they can build a static charge (not intrinsically safe, attendants have special torches), pumping fuel into jerry cans not on ground (has to be grounded), people insisting they can fill a drum at a petrol station instead of going to a filling s
I drove a gasoline tanker for 7 years with no accidents or incidents. But it was only by the grace of God because you would not believe how many idiots will walk up trying to ask how the gasoline flows into the ground, and be smoking!!!
There's countless times that I could've died a horrible death because stupid people took chances.
I drive for ExxonMobil and we had to watch this film at a loading class for Motiva Shell and the person unloading the truck didn't ground the unit first and he used his cell phone to check a compartment and the static electricity caused the explosion. This is why at the pumps they do not want anyone using their cell phones while fueling because it can build a static charge that can result in a fire at the pump.
Incorrect. The info is not correct. I am a tanker driver. We use this as a training video. He used a lighter to check for a retain. The compartment was full of gasoline vapor.
@manofthehour1980 The South African report said the a phone was the source of ignition. The video cannot prove it was a phone. If a phone was used, then it is most likely static discharge from reaching into his pocket. Boots will insulate, and he isn't grounded to the vehicle when his hand enters the compartment. The static will discharge through the vapor. This was a big problem when sulfur was reduced in diesel and replace with synthetic lubricants.
if cell phones and gas dont mix then how come i can ring my cell phone while it sits in a cup full of gasoline and nothing happens... the phone just rings and rings
@wana69erplz That is a bad example because it is the gas fumes that burn and not the fluid. And the fumes need an adequate mixture of air to burn as well. I am not disputing what happened here but theoretically, if a cell phone fell and became damaged such that it created a spark when it rang, and it was in a flammable environment, it could cause a fire.
SO, after that retard killed himself trying to be cool infront of a truck driver, there were alot of balls or something rolling around on the ground. I wonder if any of those were damaged during the retard event. I gotta say, if that guy was that STUPID to do that then he deserved that. We should all get entertained by that. He was just a stupid gas jockey!!!! He is one of those disposable humans America is full of.
yes,it was a lighter.the guy was using it as a light to see how much fuel was left in the compartment.really stupid thing to do.i just don't know what skin color has to do with it...
hey fuckhead, you obviously diont know ANYTHING about engines because what the fuck happens in an engine???????? gasoline, mixed with air is ignited and EXPLODES.
Nice use of the f word. I don't know how many engines you've built but you need to know you're wrong again. Gasoline engines burn gas. Spark plugs ignite the gas causing a controlled burn, not an explosion. If there was an explosion it would most likely destroy the cylinder. Arm yourself with knowledge.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
if the gas only BURNT it wouldnt push the piston down the cylinder thats why it has to EXPLODE. Think about uit if an engine onoly burnt fuel we could use anything, shit people would be ruinning off lighter fluid:) you have to have something EXPLOSIVE
Do some research on the topic because you're still wrong.
As far as running engines off of lighter fluid is concerned: ingredients that are commonly used to make lighter fluid (butane) are also used in various blends of gasoline.
Obviously you have no idea of what you're talking about and apparently 'thinking' doesn't help you. But hang in there sunshine, b/c I think you're freaking special.
you are right engines use a controled burn the expansion of the hot gases forces the piston down. NOT explosion this is called detonation and damages engines
did that guy survive? on Mythbusters, they supposedly "busted" that a cellphone cannot ignite a fuel source. i think it's completely within reason that any electronic device could ignite fuel
He wasn't answering his cellphone, he was trying to use it as a light. That however, was his second mistake. The first, was climbing on top of the truck and opening the dome lids, on a gas wet truck. Major stupidity.
it was a cigarette lighter... search on ny times... for "lighter ignites tanker"...

It's not a good idea to check for gasoline with a lighter especialy in a confined space suck as a large fuel tane.

First of all: why in the everloving fuck would you use such an old tanker truck, which has it's cab attached to the tank.
and gas caps on these tanker trucks should be located on a central console behind the cab,
if you live in a country where infrastructure and services are a priority, that is.
