I never associated Bobby Darin with this kind of song but then I don't know much about him. I do know that I like this song a lot, a simple message very well expressed.
I had nearly forgotten what a lovely voice Bobby had. What a crying, screaming, howling shame that we the people have amnesia and didn't remember in 2003 that we didn't want a war.
Let us teach this song to students in every school all over so that they sing it every morning to revoke the decisions made by politicians and arm producers and dealers, and let the people get relieved of their stress and live in peace.................
Bobby Darin wrote this song in 1969 right after Nixon took office with the promise to end the war in Vietnam, but instead started dropping more bombs. I remember the people in the streets chanting: "Hey, hey, LBJ. How many kids did you kill today." So Oatifer has a point. Carter was the only president in recent history who didn't kill anybody or invade anybody, and spoke forcefully for human rights. But it's a great song however it's presented.
Excellent piece of work! Thank you very much for Sharing!
What a way of meeting people and get to see their talent. At first was reluctant being on youtube, but getting to do this has brought me into the houses of some very special people. You are one of them. Life; isn't it wonderful!
Keep up the good work. Hope You Are Having A Splendid Day!
MERCI!!!!! Vous pouvez maintenant apprécier et partager ce magnifique poème avec vos amis francophones. La traduction est sous la description. Elle n'est surement pas parfaite, mais suffisament proche =). Enjoy!
I love this video, yesterday I was watching "Beyond the Sea" a Biopic of Bobby Darin. I had quite a crush on him when I was about 10 yrs old. I had no idea he did a song like this, I seem to remember he became a Lounge Lizard for a while before he died. All of your photo's are so well put together, I especially love the one of Pete Seeger and the other of Woody Guthrie. Thank you so much, just a thought not a criticism, what about a pic of Arlo Guthrie in there after Pete and Woody.
Wow. Tante Eileen, Je t'adore! I love your artistic sensibility. Your videos are always right on with interpretation. Amazing how things never seem to change, and songs seem to apply no matter when you hear them. Had no idea Bobby Darin had such a smooth voice.
It would be maervelous human beings take notice about the manipulations to carry them into a war....really, what about if nobody goes?......the powerful if not have enemies create them, for the big bussiness of war.....just we want PEACE.
I like the nice mellow voice with the building tempo. I am surprised by the mentioning of conflicts on the African continent. In1969 most peace and protest songs were pretty much focused on Vietnam and had nothing to do with all the wars and conflicts of that time unless they were old civil war songs. Peace may never come to humanity in our life time but we can start with music instead of guns.Bobby Darin a time traveler in song. Thanks for the great collection of pictures.
@appapo3 Thanks for your comment, Brian! As for the African reference, I do believe the problem(s) existed at that time but that it wasn't on the radar screen. It's also interesting to note that in the Tim Hardin rendition, the stanza on Solzhenitsyn was left out....perhaps to avoid controversy...?? I don't know....
What can I say, except that I guess I'm not as hardened as I thought I was. This beautiful, inspiring and insightful video, did bring a couple of tears to my eyes. The subject of peace is very close to my heart, and I truly appreciate you spreading that message in such a warm and talented way.
It's very nice what you did! I refer primarily to the message and the way forward harmoniously. Peace should not only remember when, because of wars, people die. We also believe that peace is not just absence of war (not agree with that famous saying "if you want peace prepare for war"). I believe that peace is a virtue, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice. Congratulations and success!
I too have put this on my Facebook page. You are right, Eileen. The words of this song are just as prevelant today, which is a very sad thing. Once again my friend, amazing song, images and video. Peace
Tremendously beautiful piece of song, and images, and words. Brother Solzhenitsyn are you busy ... is it Joan Baez further ahead? Lovely photograph of her if it is Eileen. I´d never heard Bobby Darin like this. I imagine he must have sung this late in life as this is not the voice we know from all those 50´s radio classics. Wonderful songs those of him.
@MHumberto Hi Manuel! You're right. He had become involved in the Vietnam anti-war movement. He had been also been highly involved in Robert Kennedy's campaign (he was there when Kennedy was assassinated in 1968). He went through a very difficult period after this and it was during that time that he wrote the song (1969).
Oh that´s why then, but it´s not less beautiful Eileen, it´s just different that´s all. The things you say make me like him more, now. I had no idea of that.
I've posted it on my Facebook Profile Page...........I was one of the millions that marched against the war in Iraq /Afghanistan.......... War criminals never to be brought to justice.

Bobby Darin's best song ever, IMO. Right up there with the best of John Lennon's stuff (and Lennon's "Imagine" is my favorite song of all time).
I really love this song ...
