Ernie was not "Steve Allen"; he didn't have the gift of gab that Steve was famous for when talking with members of HIS studio audience. In fact, that's one reason why Ernie did away with a live audience when taping his final series of monthly specials for ABC in 1961- they only got in the way of his peculiar comedic genius....
