  • this sounds bad, the musical instruments that were chosen and combined suck. whatever that electric bass sound im hearing sucks, the lute is awesome though

  • BUT, I can also hear what appealed to WetLettuce1966. It sounds indeed like they were having a hell of a lot of fun doing this and there's nothing wrong with that. On the contrary, there's everything right about it. Having grown up in the era when one was taught to revere the composer's text as Holy Writ, I find it encouraging when so-called "classical" musicians get down. Sometimes the attempt is more important than the result.

  • Maybe someone who is more musically literate than I am can explain why this is considered fusion. I have the same piece recorded by Jordi Savall and Hesperion XX on a CD called Espana Antiga, and do not see what the sacrilegious liberties taken seem to be.

  • I like Rolf's playing and have much respect for his high accomplishments as a musician, but, I have to object here - for me this sort of thing is a misuse of music for - to me - no aesthetically-discernable purpose. Call me old-fashioned - I admit it - but I don't like or approve of "fusion". Sometimes, like right now, I wish I could feel differently...

  • @JoelvanLennep: Although I can understand your feelings (and I am certainly not an uncritical fan of "fusion"), I have a very different reaction. For me, this track epitomizes the joy of playing music.

  • Maybe I can reconcile the two points of view. My own bias is with JoelvanLennep, in that I rarely find fusion successful. I don't have anything against it on principle, but most of the time it just doesn't work out in practice--and this is a case in point. It follows the predictable pattern--first a chorus of Earlie Musick, then a jazz solo, then another chorus of E.M, and so forth. It's kind of like putting a car in a horse-race.

  • @JoelvanLennep @JoelvanLennep: I'm not sure that I get where "fusion" chimes in. There are extensive (may be) improvised/cadenza section - which is (to these ears) quite homogeneous with the style/perfomance of the piece (also with the conceptual "diminution" frame of the album). The stylistic clash fails to materialize - besides, it is terrific playing. Perhaps I am missing something.
