I`ve seen2 of them do a dogfight with using the skyline of the mountans. - Fast & close circles, nice to see them! 2005 i´ve seen them on airpower (Zeltwelt, Austria). Great Jet!
@Wyvern0110 The Draken could've been updated to modern standards if the Swedes and Finns wanted it to, just like the Romanians did with their MiG-21 Lancers. It wouldn't however be a good reflection on the quality of their airforces if they were still using 50 year old aircraft. Thats why the Romanians are starting to outphase the MiG's even though they are perectly capable of holding their own against much more modern fighters

@iamstarstuff001 the swedes did dog fight trainings against the russians with them over the baltic sea. Guess who flyed home with shit in their pants ;)
The Griffin is no where near as groundbreaking as the Dragon was. It was so cutting edge in every single way. It was the best fighter in the 70s in the entire world. In Sweden it was taken out of service in 1999, being replaced by the Griffin on the last flottila F10 (i believe i spotted some dragons with 10 in front of the three crowns in the video btw :D) The Griffin will be the last swedish fighter ever built if nothing drastic happens :P It will likely be replaced by the Eurofighter in 2030.
@JJswe93 In 2030 it will be 36 years since the Eurofighters first flight and 27 years since it was introduced, there would be no reason at all for us to buy it. And the plan is to operate the Gripen until 2040 anyway, and a lot can happen in 29 years so there's no way of telling whether Gripen will be the last Swedish fighter or not.
@xsf908 When Finland became russian after 1809 and after thatFinnish 1918 they started a form of etnic cleansing. The finnish language is a potpourri of 211 russian dialects. A Swede (Johan Vilhelm Snellman) put them together to a new language - finnish. Now it's not so many Swedes left i Finland.
@xsf908 Maybe because two engine, much more tested (even in combat) fighter (F/A 18) was available for cheaper?
Nowadays Gripen would certainly seem quite OK, but by then the accidents during testing and even in the public airshows didn't make Gripen much good publicity, either.
@bingofioul the Gripen will perhaps be the last fighter Designed and built by sweden as no1 is buying it they rather buy Aged F16s F18s F15s or Migs for the same Price =( its sad
How can we afford to have several aircraft manufacturers in Europe when all the costs of R&D and production are getting so rediciously expensive and the possibility to reimburse on exports is so so slim? US have got two major manufaturers, how many do we have? Cooperation on all levels of procurement is the future I believe (If you don't want to ruin the taxpayers). SAAB can definitely be a contributing part of future collaborative efforts but some euros have to quit beeing such Chauvinists.
@ferdinand7004 thanks for the reminder! Now I also remember a little about Finnish war and yes, Finland had something to say about becoming a part of Russia. I was just thinking about the earlier wars, hehe.
@ferdinand7004 I think KekkonenKalasti was most probably joking, but there's also an important point. Finland has been some sort of shield for Sweden over history, and that's not silly argument. You can read about wars Sweden and Russia have had - and the wars have always been on Finnish soil. So yeah, talking about the first time..
But! When did Finland CHOOSE Russia over Sweden? That's an interesting expression for "being taken over by Russia"...
kucewmi I have one thing to say to you AWESOME video!!! My respect is much greater for the SAAB J35 DRAKEN now!!! Thanks for uploading this video!!!!!!
@SirRetku that's the insignia of the Lappi Wing, Lapin lennosto, if I remember correctly it was originally Häme Wing's (Hämeen lennosto) insignia, the first air wing to receive Drakens.
The Wisent (aka european bison) as squadron insignia dates to second world war. Back then, what is now Lapin Lennosto was Lentolaivue 46, a bomber squadron. Pilots received training for Do-17 bombers in Poland, witch was occupied by nazis. They also got order to invent a squadron insignia, something that might pass as one was found from label of Polish vodka bottle, Zubrowka.
BTW. Fastest plane in Finnish AF history was MiG-21, not Draken.
@762rk95tp I thought it was used by some squadron during the Continuation war, but wasn't sure, what comes to the speed record, apparently MiG-21 bis was a little bit faster, but Finland also used MiG-21 F-13 which was a little bit slower than Draken, my original source presented the top speeds for both MiGs as 2,05 Mach, and while for F-13 also the km/h -top speed was presented, the specs for bis did not, so I assumed the top speed was the same, Draken's top speed is given as 2126 km/h.
Drakenissa on jotain pelottavaa. Siipien ja rungon muoto ehkäpä? Jotenki karmiva näky taivaalla. Muistan lapsuusajoilta lentonäytöksen ja piru vie ku pelkäsin nimenomaan drakeneita...
growing up (in Denmark) this is what i thought of when people spoke of jet-fighters: Karup airbase is close by and squadron 729 (i think) flew Drakens until the early 90ies..very distinctive plane.
@7tdez25 most of them have been scrapped, but few have been stored in a museum as well as few airfields and at least one militarybase, and few have been made into memorials, some of which are in places accessible for the public, while others are in military bases like Air Force Academy in Tikkakoski.
@kulmedfarbrorful the engine was a Swedish license copy of a Rols-Royce Avon, I heard that the Draken still holds the Finnish airforce's speed record in level flight, the second Draken prototype unintentionally broke the sound barrier during the first test flight, while climbing none the less.
Very brave video in all respects! One of the few filming works, where hard rock plays well. Many thanks for the production team, pilots and airspace controllers for the flights of the yellow.
yeah, but there were more crashes with Draken than what they had with MiG 21. I wouldn't be so surprised in the case of MiG 15, since Draken is by far better than MiG 15.
Finnish Air Force only had four MiG-15 UTI trainers between 1962-1977, not the actual fighter! Also, a total of *nine* MiG-21s were lost (MG-80, MG-79, MG-63, MG-139, MG-115, MG-120, MG-117, MG-128, MG-122, listed in order of events) against ONE Draken (DK-231). The other DK lost it's engine but landed safely. It was decommissioned after the event.
Probably thee coolest video of Draken I have ever seen... I can just picture those finnish pilots with hairy chests, cigar in mouth and balls of steel.
They would probably fly circles around the swedish Draken pilots;-).
Both the J35 and the J39 have started it all. Between 1967/69, the project plans for the SAAB 39 Gripen, were stolen from Sweden. They were recovered after a while, by a team of two, from the offices of a known leader industry in Munchen. It would be a perfect story for a movie. The guys that recovered the SAAB drawings are still living, we will have to wait few more years before this story can be issued in details.
platypus: you can't deny that the very early gripens were pushed out too early. The Volvo engine was defective, and the software also.
Also, there was a silly requirement for the FiAF at that time that the fighter had to have 2 engines for redundancy. Still the Mirage 2000-5 and F-16-latest block were in the same tryouts. If you ask me, the pilots wanted the JAS but the brass didn't.
You guys build beautiful aircraft, i love the draken but fell in love with the viggen when i was a kid in the 80's. The gripen is a neat little fighter but not as revalutionary as other designs. How many viggens are still in service? Just the reconnaissance version?
The Only advantage the Hornet have is that they can stay a longer time in air! Towards Gripen that is! The Hornet is a 3d generation Fighter and Gripen a 4d generation. Even the old Draken beats the Hornet in some aspects!
Finnish air force had seven J35 B, five J35C twin-seaters, twelve J35 XS ( made in Finland under licende, equals to J35 F2) and twentyfour J35 F1's. Alltogether 48 planes.
The weapons were primarily the same as was in the Swedish use.

Easily the best fighter of its era along with the Mirage. Phantom was good, but it cant maneuver well.

matte95 is crazy. We Swedes were very happy to sell the Draken to Finland. ("Finlands sak är vår!")
We're just disappointed you guys went and bought F-18s instead of Gripen!
platypusfrenzy 2 years ago
To be honest, the Gripen couldn't stay in the air when the FiAF bought the F-18.
Then again it looks like you guiys are going to buy the AMV. :)
KekkonenKalasti 2 years ago 2
platypus: you can't deny that the very early gripens were pushed out too early.
Still our F-18 kicks the JAS our of the sky. ;)

i dont think we finnish would not buy Gripens i heared they have orded F-35 B/C for replace F-18 B/C ;)

In hindsight, so am I, but the Gripen just wasn't ready at the time.
But then again we eastern neighbours have bought airplanes from you guys since the 60's, or when was the Saab Safir introduced as a trainer? :)
I know you have a couple of our Pasi:s as well, but then again we have your CV90FIN :)
And we have your Saab missiles in our navy's missile boats.Just get those AMV:'s.
I would call that a draw. ;)
KekkonenKalasti 2 years ago
You guys build beautiful aircraft, i love the draken but fell in love with the viggen when i was a kid in the 80's. The gripen is a neat little fighter but not as revalutionary as other designs. How many viggens are still in service? Just the reconnaissance version?

The Only advantage the Hornet have is that they can stay a longer time in air! Towards Gripen that is! The Hornet is a 3d generation Fighter and Gripen a 4d generation. Even the old Draken beats the Hornet in some aspects!
Melchersson 2 years ago
Gripen is 4.5 generation! :)

Wich models and Drakens had Finland? And wath weapons used with them?
al853 2 years ago
Finnish air force had seven J35 B, five J35C twin-seaters, twelve J35 XS ( made in Finland under licende, equals to J35 F2) and twentyfour J35 F1's. Alltogether 48 planes.
The weapons were primarily the same as was in the Swedish use.
