@ErikandAndreea that is explained in the first part, there is a protective layer above the city that filters out the part of the sunlight that is harmful to the vampires...... thus making the sun of no effect to them.

@ErikandAndreea it is a technology called "lapis Lazuli field". and the more relevent question is why are the vampires succeptable to the use of holy water? it was determined in the show that a martian bacteria was responsible for the development of the original vampires. so why holy water?

unless what is used as holy water contains some kind of silver compound. although im just thinking out loud
