@MarkHarrellJr Bro, thank you for actually having a reasonable comment. Now if only this was the kind of world where people actually listened to sense...
@J0B0S0 He drummed with a few bands. I think having both Necrophagist and a jazz big band in your CV is pretty impressive.
And, most drumming greats never find their band. I'd say they're just so good they'd want something that fits their musical thinking perfectly, which is very hard to find. Having a drummer THAT good in a band would just be bad internally. Which is why people like Minnemann, Lang and Donati do solo projects / sessions, and jazz drummers form "their" bands. (Dave Weckl band?)
@TheMASDrummer HAHA First thing that came to mind was an episode of Family Guy when Peter gets a rectal exam and he didnt't know what it was and thought the doctor raped him. When questioned in court about it his flashbacks were in black and white with eery music and the doctor groping him. (lol) Not to say this wasn't bad.. Convo made me think about it. But yeah that's messed up!
@Clancedrums lol Low Budget kits doesn't mean they sound bad. Nisan Stewart prefers PDP over DW so does Eric Moore it's all in preference or whats in stock lolol.
All of those comments are incorrect. They do not have to do clinics to keep their endorsements. They do clinics for the money. Yamaha has the worlds best drummers on the roster and does not demand clinics. Name drummers make up to $2000 per clinic. And yes, Greb is a clinician. He's not on the creative music scene, he's not in the pop/rock/gospel scene, and he doesn't do sessions in Nashville, LA or New York. He does clinics. Yea he sounds great playing to track. and solo.
Sure you can do whatever you want and there are no rules. But how many of these guys can say they really make music. In 50 years, no one will remember clinicians. They'll remember Steve Gadd, Steve Jordan, Jim Keltner, Vinnie Colaiuta and Bernard Purdie. Guys that work and play music with great artists. Not drummers how go out and play everything fast and complicated.
Clinicians are innovators of their instrument. They will be remembered as the first and sometimes only. This idea can be compared to famous painters, the ones who make money do so because they are popular at that time for being a "good artist", however we all know that it takes being ahead of your time to truly be considered great.
The beauty of drums is that u can take anyway u want!! Hit the practice room haters out there. stop hitting the play button constantly and start hitting your drums!!!!it just takes prActice for these chops it's not like they have always played that way!!! And the drummers u mentioned do play in real bands and I'm sure they can lay down a groove by now dumbass!!!!!!!!!
This stuff is okay, but I really don't get what you guys are listening to when you say it's incredible. Yea the stuff they're playing is physically hard to pull off. BUT don't forget the puspose of drumming in music: to lay down a fat groove. The best drummers are the ones who work the most with musicians. Not clinicians like Lang, Greb and Donati. You have to play music on the instrument. Not just fast complicated rhythms.
there is no purpose for any certain instrument. It i a way to play the way the person wants, they want to play this way, because laying down a fat groove is what is expected, it shouldn't be upheld. Plus they are better drummers than you guaranteed, so acting like you more about it than them is just a Napoleonic complex. (sorry coming off really hostile). I agree also.
that is the purpose of the instrument in an ensemble or band setting. like any instrument, drums have the ability to be taken out of that setting to display the technical or creative ability of the musician. all of these guys DO play with other musicians, and they scale their playing back a lot when they are backing up another artist, but when you spend your entire life mastering an instrument, you have the right to brag a bit. plus clinics are how they manage to keep their endorsements.
@Drumfreke Greb as a clinician? I thought him to be one of the most musical drummers out there. More musician than clinician - although he's got the best of both worlds - and even these world's can overlap! Imagine that, solos can be musical.
uhm I know these guys are great playing, but I am wondering if its a good idea 3 drummers playing at once, i find it kind of messy, well I guess, the point is to coordinate the whole thing while playing free, also wonder how much its already planned and how much is improvisation, any drummer could tell me how this works???, so one can see that the middle bridge was kind of planned marco was giving the signal, maybe its just planned to be live, I guess its lots more fun live.
watch any percussion ensemble video. 3+ drummers play together all the time. it takes a lot of cues and watching each other but it can be very clean. these guys are professionals. they can just feel what goes where. the main groove is planned out but the soloing is probably all improvised.
percussion ensembles don't have more than three people playing drum kit all the time. I am hopefully going to do my music bachelors degree in percussion at WAAPA and know lots of people that have already gone threw the system and trust me drumkit trios are quiet rare in an ensemble.
bro....have you ever heard of Shedding??..... check it out on you tube...if your in the new york area...I can put you on to Shed spots....youll see this type of the thing all the time....
You Preach It Bro!!!! PandaTits needs to understand that you don't drink the bong water. What a retarded comment. Sonny is a monster player! ...oh yeah you also forgot Lee Ritenour in your list of credits. Pick up the Alive In L.A. cd if you don't have it. Sonny is priceless!

Musical Masterbation. You don't have to play it faster than everyone else to be the best!! Make it feel natural and play it in a "groove" setting, that makes Vinnie the KING!!!! Just my opinion as a drummer. I thought keeping TIME was what drumming is about.
Yeah but its also being musical. i would rather see a solo thats musically challenging and complex than to c someone go all out. n e 1 can play fast and loud. As a drummer also if i cant follow something i like to listen to it more. like marco does things i havnt even figured out how to do yet. I love vinnie btw
I say marco and Tony royster jr are probably the two best freestyle solo drummers in the world, I think marco has it over on TRJ by alot to be honest but all 3 of these guys kill it for sure.
nah, i don't think that tony could last as long as marco. on the summer slaughter tour, necrophagist did their entire epitah album, and about half of their onset of putrefaction album. nor does he have the creative ability of marco. watch the video where he pulls drum beats out of his ass to some randonm simpsons and futurama samples. he lands a 16/19 patern!
Minnemann and Royster Jr. rival each other to such an extreme that it boils down to personal preferance of who's the "better" drummer/musician. Speed, musicality, showmanship, coordination and they're both awesome fellows. :)
I'd say marco is the better musician by far, he has such versatility in all the types of music he has written and the bands he has played for. As for drummer I'd say it can be based on opinion, but for that I like marco's style a lot more too.

Opinions are like buttholes.
Everyone has one and they all stink.
Shut up about who's "best". No one is "best", only different and unique.
You like one better, you prefer another style, you enjoy so-and-so better. Fine.
THAT doesn't constitute someone being better, as if YOU are the arbiter of what "best" is.
