After the cold war we had an opportunity to change our(American)foreign policy and return to a less interventionist foreign policy. Unfortunately, under both Bush's and Clinton we've engaged in needless foreign interventionisms(Gulf War1&2 Kosovo, Somalia, etc) and we antagonised Russia by lecturing them on how to deal with Islamist seperatists in Chechnya. While I am NO fan of Putin, Russia is not our enemy and we shouldn't antagonize them.

Irony of everything is that Poland is not within American's sphere of influence now. The USA had made it very clear that it will always negotiate with the Russians and then will order to the poles what had been achived in exchanges between russia and US.
