Studs was a school friend of my father's ... both Chicago men through and through. I was lucky enough to meet Studs a few times and lucky enough to read most of his books: Try "Hard Times" "Race" and "Working" if you need a start ...
About 20 yrs ago I used to run into Mr Terkel on the old Northwestern Commuter Train....I was a student at the Circle Campus...he was always friendly and would just start talking to whomever was sitting next to him on the train.
His books are brilliant and really are a wonderful oral history of the common man.
To get a really complete look at his childhood and influences. Pick up his book "Talking To Myself" it came out in 1977. It is a delight to read. There are stories about the Civil Rights marches of the 1960's, interviews with famous and infamous..a wonderful read.
You cant get any more focused and honest than Studs. He supported Barrack. Shame he couldnt be there for the great day...he will be in spirit as Martin King will be.
