I have a daughter. I remember taking my daughter to wal-mart to buy her a doll. There was a white lady standing there when I gave my daughter one of the few black dolls, even though my daughter picked up one of the probably 100+ white dolls on the aisle. She looked at me like I did something wrong to correct my child. I looked at right back at her and said to my child (making sure the woman could hear me) that the black dolls are beautiful, just like you, your mom and your grandmothers.

We are white. I also did a test with my son when he was about 2 or 3 (he is 16 now). I showed him a picture in a magazine of two babies playing. One was white and one was black. I asked him if he saw anything different in the two babies. He said one has curly hair...lol. That was the only difference he could find.
I did a similar thing with my daughter when she was about 2. We are white. While shopping, I put a doll of each color on either side of her as she sat in the shopping cart. She wouldn't even look at the white doll. She preferred the black doll. When I would try to get her to play with the white doll, she would whine...lol. We did this during the entire shopping trip and she never showed any interest in the white doll.
this is because they were never enough African American dolls being marketed or sold. It seems that ever commerical I saw as a child and even today always had a larger number with European's in it. There are not enough African American's film, tv or in movies. Unfortunately, there are only a small number of successful African Americans in media and film. Society conforms to what people do, if were genuine and fair in how we treat one another it would reflect in our children.

I don't think this really is conclusive to race. It's natural human tendency to associate the color white to purity and cleanliness and black to evil and dirtiness. This is not a valid scientific test. She only did 21 black children and zero children of any other color for comparison. What happens with little white girls with the same choice? Or children of other races? I didn't like some of the cut-aways in the video too, it made it seem that she was leading the kids. A test like this is very difficult to do accurately because children (by nature) will tell you what they think you want to hear. I want to see this study done by real professionals.

I think it's more than just simply what dolls children are used to playing with. It demonstrates the pressure society puts on young children unconsciously. I asked him if he saw anything different in the two babies. He said one has curly hair...lol. That was the only difference he could find.

I did a similar thing with my daughter when she was about 2. We are white. While shopping, I put a doll of each color on either side of her as she sat in the shopping cart. She wouldn't even look at the white doll. She preferred the black doll. When I would try to get her to play with the white doll, she would whine...lol. We did this during the entire shopping trip and she never showed any interest in the white doll.

this is because they were never enough African American dolls being marketed or sold. It seems that ever commerical I saw as a child and even today always had a larger number with European's in it. There are not enough African American's film, tv or in movies. Unfortunately, there are only a small number of successful African Americans in media and film. I don't think this really is conclusive to race. It's natural human tendency to associate the color white to purity and cleanliness and black to evil and dirtiness. These kids aren't stupid, they know its a doll = not living so choosing the white doll only seems natural. If they tried the experiment on dark skinned monkeys and light skinned monkeys (too bad research doesn't allow testing on infants) then I believe this experiment may yield different results.

This is not a valid scientific test. She only did 21 black children and zero children of any other color for comparison. What happens with little white girls with the same choice? Or children of other races? I didn't like some of the cut-aways in the video too, it made it seem that she was leading the kids. A test like this is very difficult to do accurately because children (by nature) will tell you what they think you want to hear. I want to see this study done by real professionals.

I think it's more than just simply what dolls children are used to playing with. It demonstrates the pressure society puts on young children unconsciously. Without knowing it, we let kids believe that one race is inferior to another, being the "bad doll" or the "mean doll". The reason why people believe it is a "big deal" is because even fifty years later, when we have a black president and so many things have changed, the results are still the same.

I don't see what the big deal is. The bottom line here is probably just how perceptive kids are. These kids are choosing based on what they see and know in the real world. They see blacks being violent and callous, whereas they see white folks as nice and friendly. So they associate the white dolls with good. Oh but of course, it's a vast conspiracy, right? I don't know which media you're watching, but here in the Atlanta area, at least half the reported crime is in the suburbs. Of course, the ones committing the crime are still mostly black, despite being "blessed" with $200k homes in the suburbs. But no surprise - look at FBI database numbers on crime. The numbers of black-on-white crime vs white-on-black crime are appalling. And the numbers of blacks vs whites committing violent crimes is insane.

Good is usually associated with white. While bad is usually associated with black. Perhaps if she said, which doll would you like to play with most? And keep it uniformal throughout her conduction of the experiment, then perhaps it wouldnt have the "good" or "bad" doll choice.
