Fulcrum is the middle finger not the index ._. your fingers will be more relaxed with the middle finger as a fulcrum then an index finger.. What my Drum Teacher told me... Could get some type of problems with using index as fulcrum

So, unless you pinch the stick between your thumb and middle finger, you either misunderstood your instructor or he has no idea what he's talking about; although, if he's teaching you to pinch with your thumb and middle finger, I'd question his technique anyway.
