Hmm, the version I heard was that even Athena got jelous when Arachne won, and beat her up. Arachne then crawled away because she was hurt and ashamed. Athena took pity of Arachne and said she could live, but at a price, then turned her into a spider
I never heard of this version! The version I heard was Athena challenged Arachne, in a life or death battle. Then Arachne lost, and was so embarrassed that she hung herself, where Athena then transformed her into a spider. Theres too many different versions!
This video is a great way to learn about mythology! Actually, Nick Kozis has a full collection of mythology videos available on ithentic.com. Check them out! One of our favorites is "Why Bats Live in Caves" which is a really cool Mongolian legend.
that isn't the way i heard it. she finds out arachne is better, destroys her creations so arachne cursed the gods and hung herself then athena touched her forehead and her nose and ears fell off, then her fingers turned to legs eventually she was a spider
well I think the difference might be from the interpretation. You know there are for example many different stories about serveral ancient greek heros, telling a similar story. Sometimes with a creature slayin by different heroes. But from what I heard Athena didnt tourned Achrachne simply in to a spider but a half human, half spider creature. But thats just what I have read. As said ... there are many versions of the same story.
the funny thing about myths is that there are no definitive sources! One can not simply state that this incorrect based on a few scholars interpretations of an ancient story told. I have had many Greek and Roman mythology courses and have been told this countless times by professors. If one claims to be a mythology buff then they must know this. According to one book "Classical Mythology: Images and Insights" 4th Edition, Arachne challenges the goddess Athena in which Athena changes her.
i laughed my butt of because arachne is one of the main bad guys in the anime soul eater and in the anime she controls spiders and is evil and kills people, etc. etc. but yeah ha ha ha ha
this is not how i heard the story...it went as Arachne's tapestry was of the gods making fools of themselves, while Athena's was of the gods shining in glory. It was revealed that Arachne hated and did not believe in the gods. Seeing Arachne's tapestry, Athena got angry and turned her into a spider. Athena hid her children from every spider because any of them could be Arachne, waiting to get her revenge on Athena by killing her children. This story is WAAYYYY different.
@princessmcdoy That was what her tapestry was showing. Arachne wove pictures of the gods in their infidelities, their sins and secret foolishness. Zeus, for example, betraying his wife Hera time and time again. And Zeus is Athena's dad, after all. Stands to reasons he'd be angry.
@princessmcdoy You heard the children's version. Quite a few versions of this myth leave out Arachne's suicide, but she did kill herself. She hung herself with her own thread. Athena did feel guilty, but she remained angry at Arachne as well. She used the acolite to bring her back but also damned her to spinning designs for eternity. This is how the eldest known version of the myth goes.
Why is Athena dressed like her roman form?

@hunterregien It's Greco-Roman, actually. So it's both Roman and Greek. A late addition to the myth, to be exact. I like it.

@princessmcdoy
these stories have been passed through generations so some tellings are mixed but what is similiar in all stories is the truth....
Arachne was a beautiful weaver
Athena challeneged her to a contest
Arachne won
Arachne was boastful
Athena changed Arachne into a spider.
ToKissMyTears 3 months ago
@princessmcdoy
yes but that was the myth and myths dont assume to be true this is the reason why athena cursed arachne.
