@Ambush47p I think they're two very different versions as Frank sinatra's version was a happy swingman version of what sounded to be a man that just fallen in love while NGE version Rei's in particular sounded much more gothic as if she still in love but either the love is unanswered (asuka) or doesn't even exist (rei)
is rei...because at the end...she is the key for the salvation of the humans all over the world...she is the one who kill all the people, leaving only the earth without humans except for two...and then the earth and the moon still dancing for a long time before humans come back...
i think is rei, because all at the end, she si who became in ultimate angel, and transform the world into a dead planet with the only company of the moon in the eternity...
@wheem001 Yep, this is Takahashi's version. Perhaps because I first saw EVA on Adult Swim (in which they only played a truncated version of these credits), I like this version the best!
This song grew on me, when I first heard it I was like "eh it's okay..." then after I heard it more and more it became one of favorite and nostalgic songs
@dr1nk1ngm3rcury ROFLROFLROFL. you know when Japanese learn english they use their own alphabet (hiragana/katakana) to pronouce english words. So they probably learnt it like furai mi tu da muunu and hence it sounds like FRY me to the moon hha
i have to agree with you Arcananine77 she indeed made me dislike her version and i thought that it was not possible with this song i even like this one and that stupid intro so not needed
One of the great mysteries in life: why wasn't Claire Littley's version of Fly Me To The Moon used as the outro all the time? She blew every other cover out of the water.
She sang this pretty badly, it was hard to understand. I had no idea this was fly me to the moon until a year after watching evangelion. call me slow, but i just couldn't udnerstand her.
damn i never realised adult swim always cut the credits short at around 30 seconds in, why couldnt they have just gone with this one, it rounds off a lot better
Utada Hikaru covered Nat King Cole who covered Frank Sinatra who covered Bart Howard. But its a good song, nobody could eff this up. Not even a karaoke singer.
@Arcananine77 wheres the original then? i mean if she sang the song from the start then she couldn't have fucked it up if there was never a original...is there an original?
the song is like an infiite loop of covers. That being said, Frank Sinatra's verson mihgt very well be my favorite, but they are all really good. I like how each artsist does it a little differently.
can you tell me what they are talking about at the end of the series where they spend a whole ep with just talk? I watched both cantonese and english version and still dont know what they talking about. Thanks
They talk about personality, about why does Shinji avoids relationships and why does he hate himself. The Instrumentality has begun, and he is the chosen to remake the world. But for that, he first needs to understand himself. The voices spend all the chapter talking, to convince him that he is just too much pessimistic about his own value.
I suppose u'll understand what the ending means just by the scene.
Well after Rei rejects Gendo and goes to Shinji, Shinji says something along the lines of 'if they hate me they can all die.' Thus causing the instrumentality to start. Shinji then realizes that life is worth living as an individual and life is full of pain, man up. He isn't necessarily remaking the world persay, but more along the lines of humanity and the individuality of others. (Their own AT-Field,thoughts,insecurities,etc.)
No, he's right. They couldn't fit in the events of 3rd Impact due to budget constraints, and made it a separate movie. The movie and the last 2 episodes happen at the exact same time.
wow...when i first started watching the series i never like this song...but just now i started watching it again and i realized how good of a song it actually is.
I can't decided what version is the best, this one or the one sang by Sinatra.THE BOTH OF THEM REALLY LIKE ME.SINATRA HAS A MAGNIFICENT VOICE AND HIS ORCHESTRA PLAYS THE MUSIC IN AN INCREDIBLE WAY.THIS ONE IS SWEET AND GIVE YOU THAT SAD EMOTION.I THINK NO ONE SHOULD ARGUE FOR WHICH ONE IS THE BEST.THE BOTH OF THEM ARE REALLY GREAT!!!! ^^
Having this at the end of every episode really gives nge a sense of class... Also, this arrangement is the best I have heard, personally I think this is the way the song should always sound.
i honestly believe this is how this song should be played. period. any other music form will fuck it up bad. when i heard this i thought if diana krall sang this the same way she sang "the look of love" itd be even more perfect....but then i found out she did already sing the song before and...well, lets just say she used a different style for it,and to be honest, it sucked. so bad.
I enjoy her version a lot. It's more mellow and as you said, soothing than Frankie's jazzy version. I think her style of singing and voice better suited the song AND the words. Especially when she delivers those first few famous lines "Fly me to the moon . . . Jupiter and Mars"
I'm probably one of the few people who loves covers! I loving listening to the original version and the cover version of any song and taking them both for what they're worth. =)
Smooth...

yeah the song is an old jazz standard. Maybe Sinatra's take was the actual "single", I'm pretty sure his version is the most famous.
What baffles me is, WHY did this pick this song as the "ending theme" for NGE? Anyone have a clue on that?
