@0289XYZ - different peter brock. Pete Brock the car designer is much older than the late Peter Brock from Australia, who ironically was killed driving a Daytona Coupe replica... Pete Brock is alive and kicking and doing a lot of development work with old Datsuns (Brock Racing Enterprises), as well as photography and covering major historic car events etc. Cheers.
@0289XYZ Peter Brock is dead. PETE Brock (who designed the Daytona Coupe) is very much alive. Their names are so similar though, that wikipedia and google assume if you type in "PETE" you wanted "PETER."
the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe is Front Engine, the Ford GT 40, which won multiple consecutive years at Le Mans is Rear Engine (or "Mid-Engine", but behind the driver is rear in my book...) & that could put the Daytona coupe at either a great advantage (rear engine cars spin like merry-go-rounds when any contact's made with the rear of the car...look at Porsche 911's & their Race History....)
@mrmeanr, my memory might not be 100% correct here but I believe that they didn't have 5 speed that would stand up to that 289. I think that the trans was a 4 speed Ford top loader. Cast iron. They were pretty bullet proof. For LeMans, they'd probably make up the long straight gearing at the rear end. Just a guess mind you but I think I'm right on this.
@pencilneck22 Possibly, but the car in the video shown here, has 5 gears, count them. I'm assuming this is a FFR Replica with a 289-351ci sbf with a t-5 or similar trans.
@mrmeanr, coming out of Mulsanne, that's a first gear corner I'm told. From there I got three shifts. The driver does something strange after that but it's not a shift. I think what he did was put in the clutch and tried to push the shifter into the fifth that wasn't there. He pulls it back into four and he's awkwardly off again. It's happened to me more than a few times driving a four speed. Ooopsie! You're just kinda running on automatic and your street or other car is a five speed . . .
The point is: "Why cant cars be like they were in the 60s and 70s...blah blah blah?"
I'm saying that's a stupid question.
Don't compare econo-junk with a Cobra! Don't think just because the Cobra was built in the 60s that all cars from that era were "cool". I pointed out several that I think were "uncool" from that era. You can include any econo-box in that group, new and old. Testosterone fuels strong V8s. Mileage is for girls. ;P
@cobraracer1 - the film "Le Mans" was produced during the 1969 and 1970 " 24 hours of Le Mans" then released in 1971. The Mulsanne chicanes may have been in 1967 but they are an option. Thanks for posting this vid. Favorite car of all time. Selling my 11 sec 64 Falcon to build one this coming winter. Milner62 9.5:1 compression will never sound like this. They were running 12+:1 at the time. My 11:1 351w with J302 heads and small tube headers is close with no mufflers but it's not a high compression big block with split open headers, not much comes close,at least to my ears.
I have plans for buying a kit car of this car and slapping under the hood a full rollerized EFI 351W with 9.5:1 compression with aluminum heads. I know I would love this kind of engine tone but the power output would be very simmilar. Be my luck time I get the money and time to do this factory five will discontinue the kit.
The Ford SB was and to some extent still is a world beater. No other American V8 has won Le Mans out right and the FIA GT Championship. In my humble opinion, the 289 was the best American V8 built. It can be built as a gas miser or a fire breathing monster. And then there is the sound, nuff said.
Not in the coupe form; they were in the mock-up stage when Ford told Shelby it wanted him to run the GT-40 program. One was finished and a former F1 driver owns it. There's a video of it n here somewhere. The championship coupes used a 289 that was bored out to about 325 c.i. from what I've read.
Not as such. The rules changed while the 427 was still in development and when the rules were announced, the 427 was in direct competition with the GT40, which was not to Ford's liking as they were bankrolling Shelby in developing the GT40. The cars were modified and sold to other parties.

By the time "the" 427 made it into production, the rules had changed and Shelby decided not to race 427s at this would put him in direct competition with Ford, who were paying Shelby to help with the Ford Racing program. The raceprepped 427s were modified and sold as S/C models to the public
