@WiccanHighPriest0 There is little or no discipline for kids today. You talk of kids in the old days, yes they still where little rascals, yes they probably went apple scrumping, but compared to today's kids? Mmm I think you're the one wearing Rose tinted glasses. Kids today are far different, they are more spoilt, have absolutely no respect because they have more rights than most of us, and are wrapped in cotton wool.
quite right dimebolt. I think todays kids might have a bit more respect if we could give em the odd cliip round the earhole every now and then. Never did me any harm.
Hmm Jenkins has a weird idea of logic... it's someone's fault they got thrown in cus they made a fuss about not being thrown in? Jenkins is such a moron
If there was such a program today that allowed kids to feature in only underwear it would be classified as kiddie porn .... Its utter NONSENSE what is considered unacceptable nowadays
This is much more realistic than I remember Grange Hill being. It must have got a lot more PC and less realistic in the early 1980s. I was at a comp in 1978 ( never saw these very early episodes, strangely ) and this is just what it was like. Mr.Mitchell is a perfect example of how teachers can be very decent to the kids but still be strict when they need to be. I totally approve of the old ways, including the slipper and the cane and kids doing what they were told.
@verysmallclock it's got nothing to do with PC - being violent to kids teaches violence. Take off your rose tinted glasses and look at what kids were like in the old days. And ask 100 chavs whether they get smacked at home - majority will say yes. Teaching kids to care for others (along with discipline and praise where relevant) helps - hitting doesn't. Moneky see, moneky do. And you can hardly tell a kid not to hit another kid if you hit that kid! Contradictory or what?
@verysmallclock Well I left school in 2006 and obviously I was never caned or slippered. Didn't do me any harm! In fact I'm a quite decent and respectable young man.
Perranporth,to the best of my knowledge,Michael Percival, whp played Mr.Tony Mitchell is in real-life a recently retired teacher-as this was filmed in summer 1977 ,and transmitted in early 1978,I'd say the actor was in his early 30s then,so would be in his early-mid 60s now
@xraycortina no it wasn't. It was not effective at all - it just taught kids to hide their behaviour. And it sent a contradictory message - telling a kid "don't hit people" whilst hitting the kid for hitting someone!
Serious question - In today's PC and fear driven society that people always go on about, do you think these Grange Hill episodes would have been made when they included children in their underwear? I just think it's such a different world compared to back then. Back then no one batted an eye-lid, rightly so, but now people would be calling for heads to roll...
sad comment on todays world.... sheesh. Although as a kid i loved these scenes LOL....now I think your right.. makes it seem a bit creepy with the teacher... and his staring at the boys
@GoldenLegends lol :L in da school next to mine, if like someone was drowning or something and a teacher jumped in to save them... the kid wouldprobably still say stuff to get them in truble xD lol
nothing nasty is going to happen ? of course they are going to get water up there nose !

Mr Michell sounds like Jim Broadbent
and I agree in this age of child paranoia there is no way they'd show the boys in just their swim trunks

School Teachers today would not be allowed in the water with children in case they "touch them" - isn't that stupid!
GoldenLegends 2 years ago
Teachers in the UK can't do a lot with disruptive kids. We got the cane, that was a simple and effective deterrent after the first time.
