you get infected because you dont properly handle saved files. DO NOT just run them and do not change windows to put saved files on desktop. let windows put saved files where the freakin belong in documents...then scan em w/ avast and mbam. the testers dont do it right.
I LIKE MATTS VIDS BUT I WANNA SAY THIS. I DID MY OWN TESTING OF AVAST FREE. I USED DEFAULT SETTINGSFOR AVAST, FIREFOX , AND ALL WINDOWS UPDATES AND WINDOWS FIREWALL AND AVAST KICKED ASS. I TRIED EVERY SINGLE FILE ZERO DAY AND EVERY SINGLE 1 DAY AND NOTHING GOT BY. ONE FILE CALLED FLASH WAS ALLOWED TO BE SAVED BUT I SCAN ALL FILES WITH AVAST AND MBAM AND MBAM NAILED IT SO CAREFUL SOME OF THESE TESTERS ARE ZIPPERHEADS.AVAST IS BEST AND YOUR COMPUTER WILL RUN FASTER ON IT.
I use Malwarebytes and Spy bot search & destroy to monitor my own laptop. I don't have or use any internet security or antivirus protection, I monitor it on my own with the two that I mention. Is that safe enough? I run them every 2 weeks. Oh and I use Google chrome and they seem to be doing a good job for me. Let me know. Thx
@kenneth85454 i will with that install, Microsoft security essentials ! and run that scans you do and just leave essentials in the background to do what it need to do

@joshuapratt6 Ya, Avast! Free Antivirus sucks at finding viruses. But the Internet Security one is a lot better than the free version. You can find licenses and cracks for it around Youtube.
avg is the most popular free anti virus bur also the weakest .Avira and avast are far better free anti viruses.I am saying that after I saw the last av-comparatives anti virus tests and avg barely passed the tests . avira and avast had far better results.
In the free anti virus segment there is only one battle and it's between avira and avast.
@Llort1000 just for starter malwarebytes IS an anvirus and avast have real time protection, web shield, email shied,IM shield, and many more if you don't like avast then why watch this review?
Those pussies at AVG have lost about 20 Million customers over the last 2 years since they did away with Rootkit Protection in their free version. They were stuck at 80 Million users for the longest time. NOW, they have on their site that they have a total of 110 Million users!! From 80 Mil to 110 Mil in what, 3 months!! They are skewing their numbers like crazy. AVG Free SUCKS!
@Zephyer0000 : TDSS is a Rootkit. A very popular one. Among other things, it serves you re-direction when you enter search terms in Explorer or even Firefox.
TDSS.Sys is a rootkit and what it does: You will be redirected when you use google, yahoo and such. Makes it slower, it freezes and that kind of sutffs. A pain in the butt =)
I just was on Avast Forums and there was a piece of malware that was EASY to detect and Avast missed it. The guy gave a link to virustotal and the only AVs that missed the virus were Avast and Kaspersky!! Incredible.
A friend has Comodo on my recommendation. I love Comodo firewall. She got the whole suite.
Her PC is badly infected with Rogue AntiVirus Vista 2010 + other stuff. Ran a scan with Comodo with Heuristics HIGH. Found the Rogue (2 items) + 4 Trojans. PC still messed up. Used KAS Free On-Demand scanner. It found 4 ZLOB and 3 Trojans. Also ran CCleaner which helped GREATLY! Comodo found 7 out of 14 serious infections. 50% On-Demand detection rate. OK, but not great.
UPDATE: Just finished scanning her PC with A2 Free and it found 1 more Trojan. The infections in her PC had been there for over a week. Comodo definitions are generic and were up to date enuf so that they should EASILY have seen FOUR ZLOB infections + 3 others. I love Comodo but will recommend that she get Avast or Avira with Threatfire. Comodo 3.9 is what she's used since last year.
@ahmeeeeeeeeeeeed : Comodo 3.9 didn't suck. Truth be told, I discovered she Turned OFF Defense + Monitor. I found it Disabled. That may explain why so many pieces of malware got through. However, having seen the new 4.0, I realize that it is FAR superior to 3.9 in many ways. It looks almost invincible. Nice app.
@ahmeeeeeeeeeeeed : I LOVE Comodo and wouldn't want to be without at least 1 Comodo product on my PC, but you can't make the claim that Comodo is best at Disinfecting a PC. They JUST intro'd Disinfection as a feature only 2 WEEKS ago!! Right now Dr. Web and KAS are best at disinfection. Time will tell if Comodo's new disinfection capability is the Real Deal.
No COMODO is amaizing at deleting viruses and disinfecting the pc it's firewall plus sandbox plus defense+ freeze the computer on an spacific state which helps the antivirus cross his way between viruses and it has a very good detection and real-time which stop the viruses very easily plus the strong removal that acts like malwarebytes
The sandbox is confusing at first. Run notepad in the sandbox and try to save a txt file with it and you see how it works. You notice that nothing happened.
i tried to boot from Dr web live CD everything loads fine but my Mouse doesn't work i tried on different PC but same thing happened i tried different Mouse but no luck could please help me
I swear, I don't know why Dr. Web boot CD has acted up so bad recently. I burned 2 copies 1 week apart and NEITHER of them would actually Run. Loaded fine and everything else, but it would not actually scan past 5 minutes. Then the PC would just reboot. Did that on 2 diff PCs. Crazy.

On occasion, everybody will have a piece of Malware sneak in. Usually via driveby method. I just got my 1st Rootkit! No biggie. MBAM found it and removed it. Until malware UNPACKS and threatens your system, most AVs won't alert you as there is no threat. Once Unpacked, an AV should JUMP into action and shut said threat down, AVs dont react by default to simple file creation (downloading). Inside some downloads are DORMANT malicious files. Trust me, I know. Add Threatfire 4.10 to ur PC.
thx i was a bit unsure bcause i got almost every day some malware sneaking in...i have malwarebiteys pro now and its nicely blocking mulicios ips aint saw a malware if since i done that and threatfire works wery well to thx...
You're welcome. I have to say I'm more than a little surprised when I hear that "almost everyday some malware sneaks in". Either you go to VERY risky sites or you have an infected usb stick that you insert and aren't aware that it's infected. Being infected almost evryday is UNUSUAL. Anyway, unless you are prepared to devote time to understanding it, stay with the Windows firewall. Comodo firewall is what I use and I LOVE IT, but boy is there a learning curve!
u now its realy funny and strange with my story...

Matt, could you please review the South Korean antivirus program called Ahn Labs? I live in South Korea and love your videos. Unfortunately, South Koreans are so obsessed with Ahn Labs, and put it on every school and gov't computer I've seen. It lets SO MUCH through, from what I've seen, and I borderline wonder if they allow local companies to slip in pop-up programs (for a fee). No proof of this, but I really wonder. I uninstall Ahn and add Microsoft Sec. Essentials whenever possible.
Hey matt, i know u run vmware workstation and so do i but how do you prevent the malware and viruses on your vmware pc from getting onto ur actual pc?
UPDATE: In mid 2009, AV-Test,org tested dozens of free AVs for efficacy. They had each AV face thousands of zero day and near zero day threats using 2 WEEK OLD signatures! The AV that did the best was AVIRA...who scored just UNDER 50%. This illustrates clearly just how successful Avast 5.0 is when dealing with zero day and near zero day Malware. It scored 70% here in Matt's test. I'm Proud of Avast. Go check it out for yourself.
@ahmeeeeeeeeeeeed Matts a partner when your a partner you have unlimited amount of video space A partner is when you have alot of subscribers and youtube recognizes that and gives you some special features
Nice Vid, TNX a lot. I really like it if you're the one doing the testing man 'coz you can explain what is happening and you offer 'trade' insights about it as well.
Can you do a rising pc doctor review, i like to try it because of the lion logo in there, haha =).
Right now, i'm using avast 5 final free, i've kinda tried what you're doing but without vmware, testing sites from mdl, woudn't try that again, luckily avast block them all - only 4 0-day threats. Plan to use TF or DS, CPF with it.
I remember on one of these vids somebody commenting that AV-test did it's own Zero Day test of many AVs and MOST scored in the 45% blocked range. People, recognize that ZERO DAY malware is the Worst and most difficult to detect because AVs don't have a signature for it. If a Paid Suite is tested, thats different. It has every feature that company offers. A Free Sig based AVscoring in the 70% range is Great! And how many of us just happen to come across 0 day threats often. VERY few.
yeah thats what i was saying, wth is he using zero day malware. Usually he uses urls that are older than a day, considering avast picked up around 75% that is really good for zero day malware.
I was waiting to see a review of the new version of avast! to see how it would perform. It doesn't seem bad, but if I ever go back to using a free av, I think I'll stick with the free version of Avira.
Right now, my current setup consists of Norton Internet Security 2010 for real-time protection and prevention, and Malwarebytes free for on demand scanning and removal. Would you say that's a good combo?
xbsoft if your going to repair pc's then you need to realize that you should install any anti virus or suite one an infected pc. You need to clean the pc with special tools then install a good av.
Avast has been a great tool to me. I don't see why others feel that it is a bad program; it's free and it's good. I believe it is the only antivirus doing real-time scanning so that is excellent. All I can say is Avast is doing a great job and keep up the good work...and make the work better?
Today, I fixed one client's PC and boy it had that bad a** rouge AV called: XP Internet Security. I had to copy the client's documents and all the essential information to my external HDD and then use the "System Recovery" that was built into the system.
BTW I couldn't install Kaspersky under normal windows mode. I also didn't want to go to safe mode to install KIS because I could have faced windows problems during the disinfection process. So clean install of windows worked best.
Avira 9 Free is excellent. No webguard and email scanner mean nothing. You're still protected by Avira as soon as it spots malware. As for web protection, you can get Comodo Secure DNS.
Its fast, and prevents you from connecting to malvertised sites automatically. Any emails you open that contain a virus will be scanned by Avira once opened and any infection stopped in it's tracks. You're fine. Add Threatfire to your arsenal for added protection and you're Golden!
Notice how anti viruses like MSE and avast 5 are good the first week it comes out now MSE is not as good but still good and avast got worst well at least it seems like it.
With all your virus scanner experience what scanner is the best that is free? May it be for gamer or average person. Meaning Don't want it to suck up resorses but is free and good.
Well...where do I start? Vista was built on code that was still in beta, would you grow your potatoes in soil that was dumped in your garden by a stranger ? :D
I just think that it's more realistic to experiment/test on an OS that won't have more unexpected behaviour when you hit with one of those infections.
how do you configer the network card in vmware? everytime i try to go to a malware site my main computer blocks it from even going to the site. it is using bitdefender Total
Avast Makes a Decent Free Product :) QC

Matt, could you please review the South Korean antivirus program called Ahn Labs? I live in South Korea and love your videos. Unfortunately, South Koreans are so obsessed with Ahn Labs, and put it on every school and gov't computer I've seen. It lets SO MUCH through, from what I've seen, and I borderline wonder if they allow local companies to slip in pop-up programs (for a fee). No proof of this, but I really wonder. I uninstall Ahn and add Microsoft Sec. Essentials whenever possible.

Jesus, are you using a typewriter for your computer's keyboard? Your typing at 7:54 was hella loud lol.

No,the new KIS 2010 is not a resource hog.I have only 1 GB of ram (my OS is Windows 7) and it works great
jorei1997 1 year ago
Avast needs some kind of behaviour protection too. You can't survive on Generic + Signature in this time anymore.

for avast patriots like me i think =), avast 5.0.415 beta is out for public testing...... just so....=)
Waiting for more test vids [only from matt]....
exdotafanatic 1 year ago
Nice Vid, TNX a lot. I really like it if you're the one doing the testing man 'coz you can explain what is happening and you offer 'trade' insights about it as well.
Can you do a rising pc doctor review, i like to try it because of the lion logo in there, haha =).
Right now, i'm using avast 5 final free, i've kinda tried what you're doing but without vmware, testing sites from mdl, woudn't try that again, luckily avast block them all - only 4 0-day threats. Plan to use TF or DS, CPF with it.

Comodo internet Security is good
And its got a great firewall
And its Free

I remember on one of these vids somebody commenting that AV-test did it's own Zero Day test of many AVs and MOST scored in the 45% blocked range. People, recognize that ZERO DAY malware is the Worst and most difficult to detect because AVs don't have a signature for it. If a Paid Suite is tested, thats different. It has every feature that company offers. A Free Sig based AVscoring in the 70% range is Great! And how many of us just happen to come across 0 day threats often. VERY few.
Idolpurist 1 year ago
yeah thats what i was saying, wth is he using zero day malware.

RahuXVII 1 year ago
@RahuXVII im using the same combo :)

JantrinaProductions 1 year ago
You can turn off as many of those processes as you want. Your PC would then speed up.

every process of avast is a protection right??for email, executable files,surfing..i mean it's almost 7 running of them, eating a lot of ram
JantrinaProductions 1 year ago
no avast only uses 1 process now using about 1.5mb of ram on average
0Dark0Fury0 1 year ago
cool!thanks, ill switch to it.i really hate those 7 processes...:(
JantrinaProductions 1 year ago
@JantrinaProductions Avast has Never eaten a lot of RAM. At least not that I've ever heard.
I got Avast 2 yrs ago with an OLD used PC with a 28GB HD and 512 MB of RAM. Got Avast. No slowdown.

xbsoft if your going to repair pc's then you need to realize that you should install any anti virus or suite one an infected pc. You need to clean the pc with special tools then install a good av.
Dieselman743 1 year ago
Avast has been a great tool to me. I don't see why others feel that it is a bad program; it's free and it's good. I believe it is the only antivirus doing real-time scanning so that is excellent. All I can say is Avast is doing a great job and keep up the good work...and make the work better?
rockertorock 1 year ago 3

Shouldn't it be 4 missed, because on of those URLS infected your browser.

With all your virus scanner experience what scanner is the best that is free? May it be for gamer or average person. Meaning Don't want it to suck up resorses but is free and good.

Why are you using Vista? I don't understand that
watchingher86 1 year ago
What's there to understand? It's an OS.
mrizos 1 year ago
Well...where do I start? Vista was built on code that was still in beta, would you grow your potatoes in soil that was dumped in your garden by a stranger ? :D
I just think that it's more realistic to experiment/test on an OS that won't have more unexpected behaviour when you hit with one of those infections.
Great videos by the way I am subscribed
