as for this cover, it's sweet and enjoyable, if indicative of it's time. Diana wasnt reinventing the wheel or trying to make us forget abouty Brenda Holloway's incomparable original.
Perhaps if we try to remember WHY Diana covered it (as a tribute to the songs' co-writer, Berry Gordy- it's on a tribute album comprised of his compositions), it would yield greater pleasure on it's own terms.
Okay...I finally listened to Brenda Holl0way's original version and it is nice, in the vain of the early Motown sound. Diana's version is more jazzier and has a more of a cleaner delivery as only Diana can give. Brenda did her thing and Diana does her's, there's no need to compare them. Its like comparing apples to oranges. I love Diana, so of course I prefer her version of all of them...lol.

@DoshUnScripted- i think you may have meant "caricature". But honestly, Diana is past the point of chasing the charts now, or even needing to. She endured a very tough time in her life (getting arrested, having her husband die, etc.) and now she really needs to just do things on her own terms.
But she's definitely not 'forgotten'. I can't imagine Madonna being forgotten, either!
@Seyahhsod- i dont know if rap would be the way to go for Diana (although she has dabbled a bit in the past) but i agree it would be fun if she cut loose like Dame Shirley did when she covered "Get the Party Started".
I like Diana don't get me wrong but this song ONLY NEEDED BE RECORDED BY BRENDA HOLLAWAY. Hope I spelled her last right. When I heard Ms. Holloways singing this I was daaaaaaasaaaamn
@icecreamladydream it was a dedication to berry who cowrote this song and was written with diana in mind. it is a perfect tribute song for her to sing. she sings it differently to brenda...the floating beauty that has become her trademark. this is a great interpretation.
@wonderboyjoy The song was also co written by Brenda. I think Brenda sings it so much better. Soul, richness, feeling. Diana's version is a bit flat. Like going through the motions but Brenda amaaaaaazing!
Brenda Holloway and her sister, Patrice Holloway (of Jose and the Pussycats fame) actually brought the song to producer Frank Wilson. The 3 of them along with Berry Gordy must have finished it, so it has a songwriter credit that includes all four of them. Blood, Sweat, and Tears covered it after Brenda Holloway (my absolute favorite version and one of my favorite songs). BSandT had a big hit with it, and gets major credit for their version. I love Brenda's best of all.
This is quite bad. It is void of any real emotion or depth. Check out the Motown original by Brenda Holloway, who co-wrote this song. Brenda's version was the first and the best.
@AprilStevensSunny but this was done as a tribute to berry. it is not in some kind of competition. it is light and beautiful and has the sound of diana.
She was almost anorexic then... she was way too overworked and stressed... however the photo was done on purpose like that with a lense that made her upper body look very small and her feet bigger as they were a lot closer to the camera... incredible photography and this technique is used with many pro photography to get the same effect with different body parts... it really was incredible and gutsy... It made people look at her as something other than just a glamorous woman!
@hotcheetoluver2007 That's why it was so provocative, she goes from looking like a super DIVA glam queen to a starving child eating an apple, it shows how diverse she is... and launched her as a solo artist that no one can ever top. No one! Only Diane does it her own way and hence she is the most successful entertainer of the last 150 years... duh!
With a little tweaking and stronger bass, this could have been bigger than it was. I don't care for this mix, but the song has potential. I'm glad that Ross has returned to her Adult Contemporary groove, as the "I Love You" album was just stunning and lush. In my opinion, it was her magnum opus (great work) of the first millenium decade. If she wants to, she can give us another in 2010!
@JumpStreet1983 the mixes on her recent recordings are similar to this and the sound is not appealing.. the I love you album had to be one of the worst albums she ever released.. she has terrible producers.. the sound. the mix is not something that will sell. yet she continues to use it.
Just heard this song for the first time watching Bride Wars. I had to look it up. I wanted Ryan Shaw's version, but OMG/ Miss Ross was a very pleasant surprise.
Not bad, not bad. Diana can do it all once she puts herself into any song she sings. I have to give it to her, Diana is a wonderful and fantastic vocalist. She just glides across so smoothly while there are others who seem to put too much into a song and their guts, Diana has always come across taking a song and putting her mild stamp on it and making it work.
Diana made this song her own. This song has been remade on several occassions by different artists and Diana's stand at the top. Again, she made this her own. This rocks!
I'm a young man in my 20's and I know that Diana Ross still has an amazing market to make the music that she loves and others will too. She don't have to compete with singers trying to make a name for themselves.! Ross is Adult Contemporary
DetroitD60 I think the folks at Soulful Detroit know who you are.Stop! in the name of love. Give Diana the same respect you give Mary & Flo. This is a bad recording? First of all babyluvchild, I don't give a "care" about that first thing you brought up, ok? Next, yeah , this is a lame performance and I have thought so every since I bought this CD in June of 1995. When her song came on, I got that opinion right away. Now fuck off , ok? Thanks
it's on a tribute cd for berry gordy...there are some great covers on it...you are you is a good song recorded by shanice (berry wrote it as a dedication to doris day who he really liked). smokey has a great song on the cd as well. it may still be available on amazon if you are lucky.
Hi Yorkycub...Glad you liked it. The cd also has another song by Diana Ross & Supremes called 'Can't get along without you'...It's 'My world is empty without you' but with different lyrics
This song was not about Ross at all. It was written by Berry Gordy/Frank Wilson/Brenda Holloway/Patrice Holloway. The original version was recorded by Brenda Holloway who had a minor hit with it.
yes it was...have you read berry's memoirs? berry said he originally cowrote this song with diana on his mind. berry's book is called to be loved and he gives a lot of information in it. Have a good day.
didn't berry gordy co write this and it was alove song for diana that she never realised was written about her until years later?? i think i read that in berries memoirs.

@scottmanduzy
She is a bit of everywhere and no where.ec
She had a hit with a remake of "I WILL SURVIVE" and then she started to become a character of herself.
She now does a lot of talk shows and intimate concerts.
Kind of should be a lessons to the youngNs that you just cant disappear and the come back thinking the public will take you back without question.
Reminds me.... that Madonna,Britanny and some others better come out with something new before forget about them.
