This is part of Toei's Robot Romance trilogy(Combattler V, Voltes V, Tosho Daimos), a series of cartoons that weren't just designed to sell their toys, but actually used the cartoon as a storytelling medium. Which meant more kids bought the toys. Clever one, Toei.
