I'm no authority, sevenalive, but it's my understanding that they thought (after 9/11) that there were more worthy "Real American Heroes", and that's why they changed it. Natch, you may sing it however you choose, thanks to the real American heroes.

Well yeah, the joke becomes a bit soured when the media are referring to firemen as heroes and they're making ads about hotdog inventors. Might be a bit.... insensitive...
