"That Haunting Melody" was one of the very first songs to employ "scatting", in which the singer uses nonsense spoken syllables to vocalize like a musical instrument.
George M. Cohan wrote it, and Al Jolson had one of his first big hits with it, in 1912's "Vera Violetta." He recorded it shortly thereafter, at his first session with Victor that same year.
im 13 and when my father and i are in the car my favorite station on the [satelite] radio is the 40s station yet my favorite band is no doubt. i think more children/teens these days need to be more well rounded and not just be focusing on the simple minded peopl that only sing about money "bitches" and cars. just saying. also alice is dead 2 ftw...
My dad thinks I'm a weirdo and my friends think i'm 'lame' because I don't listen to lil' Wayne or some other idiot with 'lil in front of their names.
I'm in love with music from the 90's 70's (late 80's too) 60's (If the beatles were in the 50's too yes) and the 20's . A few songs from the 2000's are good though.
@robbyinchains: You've got my respect, little one. It takes some real backbone to openly stand up for oneself and not just go along with whatever the rest of the sheep herd's thinks. Remain adamant in your individuality and personal integrity, you hear that?
(Check out Tom Lehrer, singer-songwriter, satirist, pianist, and mathematician from the mid-60s. His songs aren't really anything special from a musical gourmet's perspective, but his lyrics are arch-ingenious from a Monty Pythonesqe pov.)
@SmrtyPntz92 this really is a mix of classic and folk music, and the bad quality itself actually enhances the feel. nobody gives a shit about classic or folk anymore, sadly
try holding down ALT while liking my comment ;)
