WE is the USA not London. I have lived in a non-grid city for 10 years, and the presence of automobiles and mass transit in a non-grid city is a major issue.
@travellinman321 Not Travellinman I don't find it threatening, I just think it's a waste of time and money. Put the effort in painting someone less fortunates house instead of some stupid intersection!
This is SO cool. I love it! I REALLY want to start doing this in our neighbourhood....not sure how to get the ball rolling. I think some folks would have a hard time understanding this new concept and I worry how to deal with that too. Anyways, THANKS for posting this!
I can't believe the ignorant comments on this video. Do you really know what you are speaking out against. You are speaking out against a bunch of people that decided within THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES to do something proactive to bring the community together and share their lives with each other. Why is that so intimidating to you? How does that destroy your "formerly great nation"? Is this great nation so fragile that it can't withstand a community that just wants a place to gather and be together?
@GOODOLREBEL Does it hurt your brain to be that close-minded? I bet yer one of them big boys huh.... a big, tough, truck drivin', hippie hatin' tough guy.... you good ol' rebel, you. But really, I think you're nothing but a little, insecure bitch. I can smell your primitive way of thinking from miles away. And damn, does it stink. Time to progress, everyone. No use waiting on people who are too fearful of pushing forward.
@tourdefrance Hey dick head I'm not a big truck driving readneck. I'm not an insecure bitch. I do hate hippies I think they stink and should take a bath. I'm a hardcore Punk Rock listening MF. and I think instead of painting some stupid intersection why don't you paint some old person or low income persons house instead some stupid intersection. So take that you name call SOB!
@GOODOLREBEL You hate hippies because they stink? Nice reason to hate someone. Those poor people with houses that need painting (the ones you mention) probably stink too... do you hate them as well? It's beyond me how you can be against a community coming together to do some sort of activity - painting, or whatever it may be. You consider this a bad thing?? Your soul is pathetic. I would hate to have that much negativity inside of me. Also I don't care what kind of music you listen to. Grow up.
Design is not the problem. It would take care of itself if there was no way to profit from mere ownership of land which is the entire incentive for land speculation, all urban sprawl and all city design to accommodate the land owner's right to collect community created land values all of which is an unearned income to them. Taxing community created land values heavily as first suggested over a century ago would have ended sprawl and would have resulted in better designed and very compact cities.
We watched this video at the first meeting of San Diego City Repair -- sdcityrepair dot blogspot dot com. We intend to help more people make these things happen in their own neighborhoods--and we also seek help in transforming our own neighborhoods!
OK , I think I see where Robodoon is going. It will only be a matter of time before corporations start getting involved with creating "public" space...
Seems positive. With people seemingly turning more to the internet these days for communion (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, hell I certainly get a lot out of it) the promotion of real life neighbourhood communities are a great thing to see.
probably because you listed as one of my contacts/friends. I can remove you from my contacts list if you don't want to know about our videos. Just let me know.
This is a very important discussion. I feel that it doesnt go far enough... but then again, I am an extremist! I believe in our collective power to do more. But this is a great start. It really addresses some things that are new to most folks.
Must favorite this and keep coming back to it for referrence!
the cars won't drive over it, that's the point, it's for people not cars. Some people just need to look for faults in everything positive, it's like a disease. I think you've caught it.
glad you enjoyed it - I really believe if we stopped watching negative stuff and realize all the good in the world, we would see that our true nature is to cooperate with one another.
This is UN Agenda 21 at work. This isn't grass roots, its forwarded via "grass roots" group to fool the people, but this is UN agenda 21 policy, and this people are useful idiots for the Rich.
Because I know what it looks like, look at the trigger words, like EARTH DAY, which is UN, Look at the Art work, the term village, and the push for Humanism. This is a front for a global movement, not a grass roots. based on the ideas of UN Agenda 21. They say "In the future man will live in cages and the animals will run free"... This is a view of the cage being built under "Sustainable Communities" see www f21sc net . This is AGENDA 21 in "ACTION"
I'm afraid you're a little crazy. This is not a cage it's an open, optional, community space - there's nothing more free and democratic then an OPTIONAL local community space. And it is both a global movement and grassroots. The fact that you think earth day is some negative UN plot says alot about you.
oh and I should tell you - I've help start similar projects in the past. And I help start them on my own accord after being inspired from the Internation Youth Camp in Brazil. And I can tell you, I was not pushed or urged to do it by the UN. Crazy people like you cast doubt on local democracy, so sad.
yes why don't you explain how this specifically relates to the UN, and how it is negative. Don't send us to some conspiracy website, just explain yourself.
Mutually beneficial exchange is how speech developed communication skills. It happened in the public market, not the "public space." All hail private property, which gave birth to... THANKSGIVING!
It's kinda cool when folks gather round and do stuff like this, once in my neighburhood we painted all the streetlights in rasta colors. Then the police came and chased ous away, one month later they sent a team to dispatch all of the color.
Awesome, things I think about all the time. There are place for people to meet, in malls and greenways but meeting people on a human level is getting more difficult. The grid does a good job of keeping us slaves with people having an opportunity to meet eachother as slaves.
great! an issue which is priority!! Are gangs going to be the only extracurricular activities available to our youth?? or will me make more effort to share some love unity and positive culture!
yes that is what bothers me a people talking about crime, they just don't realize that part of the problem is a lack of real community - that is what gangs are all about.

Thanks so much for posting this video. Now I know the next stupid hippie bs to be forced on my city.
I live in Nashville TN and our mayors for the last three terms have been saying we need to be more like Portland.
Forget it! I wouldn't live in Portland if I were forced to relocate their under threat of death.
You people are the ignorant hippies that are responsibile for the destruction of what was a formerly great nation.
I'll come to your "place" and tell you this. Idiots.
