If the purpose for "changing" aikido was to sell it, then they would make it more violent, because that's what most people like, most people are so narrow minded that if they don't see a guy getting pounded or submitted by a position that completely compromises nage's posture they assume it's unnefective or fake. I've witnessed people getting kicked out of my dojo for being disrespectful. So no it's not about "selling it". The art is harly known in america as it is anyways so I don't know why
Combat Aikido? What is that? I've studied Aikido for over 40 years it sounds like complete nonsense. Who teaches this? In truth there is no 'combat version' of Aikido. Things are just a bit different on an applied level. Someone who really is proficient in the art form is completely unpredictable and technically explosive. It would be very difficult to distinguish such a thing from 'combat karate' or 'combat jiu-jutsu'. Hikitsuchi Michio asserted Aikido practice as 'wielding a live blade.'
Dont lie to yourself. This is the modern "shame / lame" hombu style of aikido. There is no combat version for it, you always train same method and with that method it not hard to eat a punch in your face.
I am sorry for being offensive and believe me modern aikido lost his way... if you still want to practive aikido go and learn traditional aikido. They changed modern aikido to sell it easier.. money money and moreee money
@MrFkanik Are you stupid? This man, Moriteru Ueshiba, is the grandson of Morihei Ueshiba O Sensei and he IS a follower of Aikikai (traditional) Aikido.
If uke had continued that movement past 0:42 and closed his left fist tori would have got one almighty smack in the gob. I love how uke's posture is perfect until the final second or two at 1:21 there's a perfect opportunity for uke to clock tori with a punch.
@ketsan essentially that's what he's after. Uke, off balance, moving in a circle and about to throw a great big left. Then you apply the kote-gaeshi and the force of uke's movement and punch increases the effectiveness of the kote-gaeshi. One day hold uke's hand in the kote-gaeshi position and get him to throw a left hook at you. You barely have to apply it because uke puts it on for you. Same applies for tenkai-kote-hineri
@ketsan it's not about it being easier. It's also easier to grab the collar and headbutt them or knee them in the nuts. It's about attempting to perfect your feel of their movement, your timing. The huge tenkan is difficult and is learned as a difficult movement in order to make your 'easier' way a lot easier and more effective. Anyone can break balance with atemi
@sum1otosh1 And what do you mean "it's not about being easier"? What you deliberately don't do the technique correctly because that would just be too easy?
@ketsan you train in the parts you find the most difficult so that you learn from the intricacies and principles that make it more difficult so that you can apply those principles to your finished product and make your finished product better. That's the whole point of it being difficult.
I wonder if any of you understand this is a demonstration. In real life, the entry to this technique would be damashi/kuzushi, some form of deception and taking the opponent of balance to distract the opponent before applying this technique. You seem to forget the Japanese were killing themselves on battlefields. They would not use this technique if it were not effective. Besides this is the demonstration version, the combat version is very different.
@muyiwamc2 To that I want to add that in Aikido we're not that "stupid" to design one particular technique for one particular attack. In Aikido we train principles which we can apply in real life.
If you know the principles, you can save yourself improvising with these principles and it WILL work. Going trough your memory to memorize the technique for an attack is least effective when in such a situation.
To all critics, aikidoka arent practicing this day in day out just for that one possible streetfight, Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world,so why bother?.True budo spirit is the goal, it isn't all about acting or looking tough. The only important struggle to win is the one within ourselves.Like the story about the monk and the samurai goes."here open the gates of hell(anger, self righteousness)..and here open the gates of heaven(being at one with oneself and the world)."
@dojomania True, but Aikido was also initially trained as a viable martial art. O Sensei was no stranger to violence or temper tantrums, and neither were many of his prominent students.
To haters: what this video shows is just one of the many ways to do kote gaeshi. There are much more practical, direct ways, and a good dojo makes them a part of the cirriculum. Judging Aikido from these disconnected segments is stupid.
@shihonage Indeed. During the lessons I'm very critical. I tell my teacher: "But in real life the attacker could still to this or that or that, etc." To which he replies: "This is a mere form; it is a way to learn the form/principle. Mastering the form is the ultimate goal."
As you said, we shouldn't judge Aikido on loose techniques.
Judoka give their arms freely, as do wrestlers, BJJers and other Jujutsuka. Untrained people often give their arms to people in fights. Boxers do it when they clinch.

@sum1otosh1 I prefer breaking uke's posture on contact, it's just an easier way of doing things.

That's exactly the point; you don't "give" your arm to people in street fights, you idiot. This shit is a joke.

You dont need to give, there are many ways to grab your opponent that is used in different situations.
