@noobschoobs yeah mine are about 8 and 3 quarter inches long, idk about my grip strength ive never measured it but i do train it. my forearms are 11 and a quarter inches around around if that helps?
@noobschoobs well ya never know.. it could be more idk. cuz look at joe kinney. he doesnt even really have that big of forearms and he doesn't lift weights just grip trains. and he has around 600-650 pounds of grip strength in one hand. probably has the strongest grip in history. he can close the coc #4 gripper like its a sponge. theirs only been a few other people that can close it. and they have to try really hard to close it.
@noobschoobs yeah that dudes awesome. idk how he does it i want to get his dvd where he talks about how he trains but its a little expensive. i wish someone would just post it on youtube. he must also have some crazy genetics as well as just training his hand strength
@gripster1986 Goals are pretty much have huge forearms and i'm 15 right now with 11 inch forearms i would like them to be atleast 14 inches or more within the year. i would like to be able to close the coc #4 gripper someday and then be able to close it for reps with ease. And to have a strong grip all the way around. like not just to be able to close grippers but to lift anything thats heavy and have thumb strength. my grippers are the HG 200, 250, and 300. i cant afford coc's now.
@idc39 650 lbs is a bit of an exaggeration lol. The average un trained man has 45 kg of gripping power - displayed by use of a grip dynometer, like mark was using.
And he only just displayed 86 kg. And undoubtedly is in the top 12 of the most 'powerful' grips in the world.
So how this guy has nearly 3-3 1/2 times the grip (650 lbs = 295 kg)of a guy who has the strongest gripping power in strongman, is beyond me. No strength athlete, or athlete for that matter, has excelled such a highly
ranked human ability to that extent. Not being well over three times stronger than one of the strongest men on the planet in that field. That would be super human, undoubtedly.
I've got the same gripper and I think the same weight, captain of crush I'm about the same as you I can get it half shut, but your twice my size so I'm sure you will get it sooner or later.
Let me start by saying Im a huge fan Mark. There is no question on the level of grip strengtrh that you have, it is simply phenomenal. My only observation on this video is that the grip tester measured 87 kg and the number 3 COC is rated over 100. I have larger than normal hands to and I have had a lot of success with using the credit card set method. Magnus Samulson uses a three finger grip (leaving the pinky finger off) to compensate.
Large hands definetly helps in gripping. I've got about 8" from thumb to pinky and can deadlift 275lbs with one hand (OL bar), then my back can't manage more. Never trained grip strength, or much weightlifting at all. Truth be told, I don't lift more with two hands cause my back is to weak .
@paaaatrika from what ive have been told is that people with shorter fingers have stronger grips than most people cuz with the shorter fingers its harder to wrap ur hand around things, so naturally ur grips gets stronger because with big objects u have to pinch and sqeeze more. Other than a guy with long fingers that can wrap around an object. plz reply back cuz i want to hear your opinon
@BulletspongeM3 Generally it's the other way around. Think of the fingers as fulcrums. The longer the lever the less force you need to move something.
@paaaatrika ok that makes sense, cuz i have short fingers and i have big forearms and good grip strength. what i was saying in my first commentmade my forearms big and increase my strength
@paaaatrika Fingers are not levers. Muscles in the forearm contract which pull on Tendons which pull on bones to move fingers, so the longer the bone the more force is needed to move it (think of a drawbridge). People with big hands can have strong grips but long skinny fingers will be a hindrance. For the same reason people with long arms usually can't bench as much as dudes with short arms. Thick bones however do increase strength because they have more insertion points. :)
wow well here is the problem im about 15 and i can do say... 35 pound curls the thing is my tendons hurt when i do so i believe its my grip strength so if i practice curls or do this will i be able to bump up the weight?
@MarkFelixTV i think your problem lies in your hand placement, the gripper appears to far back in your hand. try moving it forward towards the fingers so your pinky just barely wraps around it. This will improve leverage. With that being said if you can close a CoC 1 then technically you have the ability to close any other CoC because all the handles are a standard width, so it might just be a strength issue. Good luck in strongman
@MarkFelixTV Hello Felix, I have no idea if you're still having this problem. But if you get a small pipe that can withstand the force of your squeeze. Just put that over the top part of the squeeze machine. Your fingers would start higher, so you could press them further with the size of your hand.
@mrkiky Closing a gripper is a dynamic movement because your hand is moving. Using a hand grip dynomometer is different because your not "closing" it. Gabriel Sum can officially close the #3.5 which is rated at 322.5 lbs. but you can see a recent vid. of him using a dynomometer and he only gets 106kg (233lbs)
This is pretty old but I'm going to give a suggestion anyway, maybe someone else already gave this idea but I'll go ahead anyway, try using duct tape to tape a piece of wood to the outside of each handle. That way you can get the extension you need ^_^
I'm probably too late being that this was made in 2008. but you need to place it further up your hand towards your knuckles and away from your thumb. then squeeze it against your the inside of your hand (padded knuckle area).
I am only closing the #2 so it is not to me to give advice to a world class grip master...you have one hell of a big hand felix ! hope your bicep is doing ok.
For the record, Mark and Magnus have elite levels of grip. Mark has greater ability static grip (holding a heavy weight for a period of time) Magnus has a greater ability in crushing grip (grippers) - just like David Horne has greater ability in pinch grip (lifting weight via the fingers and thumb only). it's like saying a Powerlifter is stronger than a Strongman or Olympic lifter - each are strong in their own right
Hi Mark, I'm a medical doctor and here's my take on it. The human power grip is when you grip something horizontally in your hand, ie on the heart line of the hand. You do this well when you are gripping the grip strength measuring machine. However, with the CoC, you are gripping it more diagonally in your hand, ie. more on the life line of the hand. This produces a weaker grip. Try putting the CoC more across the hand on the heart line. I hope this makes sense.
You need to improve grip strength on the end tips of your fingers, if you cannot then you need to see a specialist. If you cannot touch your fingers to the bottom of your hand you have much bigger problems. I have an 11 inch reach and it took me years to do the number 3. Stop making excuses, if you can make a fist you can grip it correctly, otherwise your just making excuses.

get that gripper set properly once your other arm heals and you're jamming, doing it the way you just did in the vid eliminates most of your leverage, meaning that no matter what the force you apply it gets pushed outwards and not into the thumb pad.
I recently tried a dynamometer and recorded about 90kg. I never seen or heard of one before but it was part of a demonstration on the strength of grips that different birds of prey have. I started looking into grip strength and seen the COC Grippers and their ratings. I think a #3 was around 300 pounds? Does this mean I'm no where near being able to close a #3 COC? Do the poundage ratings of those grippers directly equate to the dynamometer?
@BeelMauler Yepp, were about to write the same response, same with me, if i don't sett the gripper i usually just gett it paralell and not completely closed, so you're right! ;)
@Younowkoed WHY? IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE! IT SAYS CLEARLY ON THEIR WEBSITE!
''Dog leg
Defined by some as the straighter leg of the torsion spring (the one with the sharper bend), this points out a difference that makes no difference: whether the dog leg is against the thumb or away from the thumb makes no difference in your gripper strength training; the force is symmetric either way. ''
@sockouk It is against the machine they use to test it, but I tried it out on a force machine in my schools tech department, a difference of 5lbs when simulating how it would have been pressed in the left hand... xD
@sockouk Iron Mind used to offer grippers which were wound the other way because of the difference in left and right hand use. Jedd Johnson has also commented on this.
i have really large hand too and have been using the CoC for a while now.. i have just worked up to the number 3 and if i could suggest. its easier to show you but ill try to explain. what you do is just pivot the gripper in your hands so that the higher it is in your hand the better. it might stick up close to the tips of your fingers but just get it started with the other hand 'which is legitamate' and you should be able to close it. good luck
dont buy and dont use nothing,no machine no device, you are causing hand muscle imbalance due to grip and due not exercising finger extensor muscles
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IS NEXT:do body weight exercises on your fingers
" normal" exercises like puh ups are ok but there are much better ones
do animal walking,do gimnastics training, like you sit on the flour and raise your body one the fingers and just stand in that position,or you stand in the push up position
haha thanks man this video amped me up!...Reason being so is I did that grip test machine about a month ago at a health expo and I hit 91, so if a MONSTER like you is hitting 97 I aint doing too bad lol
You ever try the Ivanko Super gripper? I think you will like it, I prefer it over the COC
you struggle because your set is practically non existant! theres a few good gripsters that have posted vids on how to set a gripper. have a quick look and then try again, youl nail it
umm.. not to discredit this guy or anything but at 5'3 my hand is 9" and my 5'9 brother's hand is 10". I know my hand is small as hell but.. this guy only has 2 inches on me??
i had a similar problem when i started whith c0c training.. i rolled the fingers inside the 2 bars.. impossible to close them..verry frustrating. No i sett the gripper futher from the thumb, more in the middel of the palm. it is not ideal to do so, because you cant use your thumb as mutch butt necassary if you got a big hand. my hand is 24 centimetrs i think that is about 11 inches.. hope you get what im meaning, my english sucks but i try..
86.1 the dynamometer, thats incredible. i have one i use on my patients, my record is 64.4 and the all time record is 70.1 ... you did 97!!!! jeez dude, awesome positive power. Nice work Mark, CJ
Rolling thunder and most grip exercises involving a bar is just as much a competition of handsize as it is of gripstrength. The CoC don't really discriminate in that way, even though it can be akward with huge hands. Also the fact that he only put out 86kgs makes sense since it takes 130kgs to close the no. 3, so in that sense, not to take credit away from mark felix, but I'd say the size of his hands helpes him more in other grip excercises, then they take away from him in captains of crush.
@serveruler that sort of makes sense to me, because i have small hands and i can officially close the coc no.2, but i'm just rubbish at the rolling thunder!
Yeah it seems simple enough at first. Grap something like a piece of towel around the bars to make 'em thicker, but maybe he's had trouble doing that, hmmm... maybe bicycle tire tubing.
@HillardEarl Mark Felix is the rolling thunder world record holder by a long shot. He has the strongest grip in the world. Compare Magnus Samuelson's rolling thunder record to his, Magnus can close CoC 4 for reps but Felix can't even close it because his hands are too big. So he was looking not for a smart ass remark implying his grip isn't strong enough but rather for a stroke of ingenuity.
@MetaRoland -- not so fast. While deadlift and grip strength are definitely tied together, they are not mutually exclusive. One could have the strongest grip in the world yet not be strong enough to single hand dead lift 300lbs. due to other weaknesses and/or strength deficiencies in other parts of the body. Also note, Magnus did his lift 7 years ago, about the time he was having back/injury problems. So tap the brakes before you throw the retired Magnus under the bus.
@MetaRoland What biffula said and etc. Haha, his hands are too big? No, they arent, he just needed tips on how to position the gripper, he closed it in an update a week later. Strongest grip in the world is a hard thing to say too, lots of people out there with devilish grip strength, also differs in what way you measure it.....
@MetaRoland mark can close the 3 now easily. his hands are a similar size to magnus's. magnus closes the 4 not using all his fingers, which is amazing. anyway, i love both mark and magnus, they are for me the strongest men in the world.
@MetaRoland I don't think it's that one of them is definitively stronger in terms of grip they are just proficient in different forms of grip power, Magnus has massive hands (though perhaps slightly smaller than Felix') and is better at grippers, Felix is better at the rolling thunder, both are freaky strong. I think Magnus would be the man to ask for grippers and Felix to improve at Rolling Thunder, making arbitrary decisions on who is the strongest in any given way is ignorance or arrogance.
@MetaRoland Marx Felix has some of the strongest hands in the world. Only a fool would say he doesn't. His one handed deadlift is more than most people can do with two hands. However A bar is different to a COC gripper.
Magnus Samuelsson has MASSIVE hands. Bigger than Mark's, as he is unable to get all his fingers on the gripper, whereas Mark can. Magnus had to move his "little" finger in order for the referee's to certify him during the close. Mark's hands are not too big.
@MetaRoland I don't really buy that his hands are too big for the gripper. I would like to know the size of Magnus' hands aswell, because they are exeptionally big too and he can obviously close it.
all I have is the Trainer and #1 CoC's (these are the old ones and from what I've read, they're noticeably harder to close than newer CoC's) and I used to have trouble closing the #1. Took some time to finally close it but that was a few years ago.
I'm back into grip/wrist strength training and I've done my homework. I've learned how to properly "set" the gripper and it has, without a doubt, made a difference.
It looks to me that you're initially setting the gripper too close to your thumb pad
ok, nevermind, lol. I just saw your other vid of you closing the #3. well done, man. My immediate goal is to get 7-8 reps with the #1 then get the #2.
for all of those of you who are gona bash me bout my stats my palms are 5inches by 4 1/2 and my longers finger is 3 1/2. somy grip comes eaiser than most people.
i can close the number 3 and almost get number 4 half way. no lie. i can also smash potatoes. but im a competitive weightlifter and wrestler so handgrip is essential.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, over 3 years later & im still working on it.

If you cannot touch your fingers to the bottom of your hand you have much bigger problems. I have an 11 inch reach and it took me years to do the number 3. Stop making excuses, if you can make a fist you can grip it correctly, otherwise your just making excuses.
t25bimmmer 1 year ago 2
get that gripper set properly once your other arm heals and you're jamming, doing it the way you just did in the vid eliminates most of your leverage, meaning that no matter what the force you apply it gets pushed outwards and not into the thumb pad.

Do the poundage ratings of those grippers directly equate to the dynamometer?
bnatural2 1 year ago
Sorry Man, but that what you did is actually wrong.
I have also 10.5" hand and can close the COC grippers without any problem.
The Key is that you have to set the gripper correctly in your hand.
You are not setting the Gripper, so the handle wich is in your palm pushes against your thumb muscle, and like this you will never close the gripper.
You must put the Gripperhandle higher in your Palm and then close that fucker!!
Sorry for my english
BeelMauler 1 year ago
@BeelMauler Yepp, were about to write the same response, same with me, if i don't sett the gripper i usually just gett it paralell and not completely closed, so you're right! ;)
Ringnesbest 1 year ago
@BeelMauler
And he's also doing left handed, the grippers are easier in the right hand.
Younowkoed 1 year ago
@Younowkoed The grippers would be easier in your preferred hand...
sockouk 1 year ago 10
@sockouk
No... The grippers are harder to hold in your left hand because of the spring...
Younowkoed 1 year ago
@Younowkoed No they are not, it's because it is most people's less dominant hand
sockouk 1 year ago
@sockouk Take a look at the grippers, put them in your left hand, and your right hand, notice which way the spring turns.
Younowkoed 1 year ago
@Younowkoed And...it makes no difference. Captains of Crush says it makes no difference themselves!
sockouk 1 year ago
@sockouk -.-' Just observe the grippers
Younowkoed 1 year ago
@Younowkoed WHY? IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE! IT SAYS CLEARLY ON THEIR WEBSITE!
''Dog leg
Defined by some as the straighter leg of the torsion spring (the one with the sharper bend), this points out a difference that makes no difference: whether the dog leg is against the thumb or away from the thumb makes no difference in your gripper strength training; the force is symmetric either way. ''
sockouk 1 year ago
@sockouk It is against the machine they use to test it, but I tried it out on a force machine in my schools tech department, a difference of 5lbs when simulating how it would have been pressed in the left hand... xD
Younowkoed 1 year ago
@sockouk Iron Mind used to offer grippers which were wound the other way because of the difference in left and right hand use. Jedd Johnson has also commented on this.

i have really large hand too and have been using the CoC for a while now.. i have just worked up to the number 3 and if i could suggest. its easier to show you but ill try to explain. what you do is just pivot the gripper in your hands so that the higher it is in your hand the better. it might stick up close to the tips of your fingers but just get it started with the other hand 'which is legitamate' and you should be able to close it. good luck
pimpinainteazy100 1 year ago
what does that number represent? 86.1?
nickallah 1 year ago
just wrap a towel around it a few times and then give it a squeeze - should help it fill up your hand better.

COC is a great training aid, but not for huge hands!
powerviking 1 year ago
dont buy and dont use nothing,no machine no device, you are causing hand muscle imbalance due to grip and due not exercising finger extensor muscles
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IS NEXT:do body weight exercises on your fingers
" normal" exercises like puh ups are ok but there are much better ones
do animal walking,do gimnastics training, like you sit on the flour and raise your body one the fingers and just stand in that position,or you stand in the push up position
but animal walking would be the best

i had a similar problem when i started whith c0c training.. i rolled the fingers inside the 2 bars.. impossible to close them..verry frustrating. No i sett the gripper futher from the thumb, more in the middel of the palm. it is not ideal to do so, because you cant use your thumb as mutch butt necassary if you got a big hand. my hand is 24 centimetrs i think that is about 11 inches.. hope you get what im meaning, my english sucks but i try..
baelrogg 1 year ago
86.1 the dynamometer, thats incredible. i have one i use on my patients, my record is 64.4 and the all time record is 70.1 ... you did 97!!!! jeez dude, awesome positive power. Nice work Mark, CJ
cjbaxxter 1 year ago
Rolling thunder and most grip exercises involving a bar is just as much a competition of handsize as it is of gripstrength. The CoC don't really discriminate in that way, even though it can be akward with huge hands. Also the fact that he only put out 86kgs makes sense since it takes 130kgs to close the no. 3, so in that sense, not to take credit away from mark felix, but I'd say the size of his hands helpes him more in other grip excercises, then they take away from him in captains of crush.
serveruler 1 year ago
@serveruler that sort of makes sense to me, because i have small hands and i can officially close the coc no.2, but i'm just rubbish at the rolling thunder!
IceStoneCold 1 year ago
that guy could actually break my hands! I know girls who can beat me at mercy lol
nogoingback50 2 years ago
Yeah it seems simple enough at first. Grap something like a piece of towel around the bars to make 'em thicker, but maybe he's had trouble doing that, hmmm... maybe bicycle tire tubing.

U can use something like towel to rap the hold bars for the gripper to make it thicker, maybe that can help :P

HillardEarl 2 years ago
@HillardEarl Mark Felix is the rolling thunder world record holder by a long shot. He has the strongest grip in the world. Compare Magnus Samuelson's rolling thunder record to his, Magnus can close CoC 4 for reps but Felix can't even close it because his hands are too big. So he was looking not for a smart ass remark implying his grip isn't strong enough but rather for a stroke of ingenuity.
MetaRoland 2 years ago 21
@MetaRoland -- not so fast. While deadlift and grip strength are definitely tied together, they are not mutually exclusive. One could have the strongest grip in the world yet not be strong enough to single hand dead lift 300lbs. due to other weaknesses and/or strength deficiencies in other parts of the body. Also note, Magnus did his lift 7 years ago, about the time he was having back/injury problems. So tap the brakes before you throw the retired Magnus under the bus.
biffula 1 year ago
@MetaRoland What biffula said and etc. Haha, his hands are too big? No, they arent, he just needed tips on how to position the gripper, he closed it in an update a week later. Strongest grip in the world is a hard thing to say too, lots of people out there with devilish grip strength, also differs in what way you measure it.....
Skierfe 1 year ago
@MetaRoland mark can close the 3 now easily. his hands are a similar size to magnus's. magnus closes the 4 not using all his fingers, which is amazing. anyway, i love both mark and magnus, they are for me the strongest men in the world.
raikkonen85 1 year ago
@MetaRoland Magnus also have enourmous hands...
Feon2 1 year ago
@MetaRoland Magnus's coc #4 closes were gay and I wouldn't call those reps that he did.
filcox 1 year ago
@MetaRoland I don't think it's that one of them is definitively stronger in terms of grip they are just proficient in different forms of grip power, Magnus has massive hands (though perhaps slightly smaller than Felix') and is better at grippers, Felix is better at the rolling thunder, both are freaky strong. I think Magnus would be the man to ask for grippers and Felix to improve at Rolling Thunder, making arbitrary decisions on who is the strongest in any given way is ignorance or arrogance.
DeadliftequalsLife 1 year ago
@MetaRoland Marx Felix has some of the strongest hands in the world. Only a fool would say he doesn't. His one handed deadlift is more than most people can do with two hands. However A bar is different to a COC gripper.
Magnus Samuelsson has MASSIVE hands. Bigger than Mark's, as he is unable to get all his fingers on the gripper, whereas Mark can. Magnus had to move his "little" finger in order for the referee's to certify him during the close. Mark's hands are not too big.
yohowruman 1 year ago
@MetaRoland I don't really buy that his hands are too big for the gripper. I would like to know the size of Magnus' hands aswell, because they are exeptionally big too and he can obviously close it.

all I have is the Trainer and #1 CoC's (these are the old ones and from what I've read, they're noticeably harder to close than newer CoC's) and I used to have trouble closing the #1. Took some time to finally close it but that was a few years ago.
I'm back into grip/wrist strength training and I've done my homework. I've learned how to properly "set" the gripper and it has, without a doubt, made a difference.
It looks to me that you're initially setting the gripper too close to your thumb pad
makemehavefun 2 years ago
you have a couple of creases/lines in the upper 3rd of your palm. try to set the gripper right there and you'll find out whether or not it helps.
It works for me.

ok, nevermind, lol. I just saw your other vid of you closing the #3. well done, man. My immediate goal is to get 7-8 reps with the #1 then get the #2.
