Magnum are one of the most underrated rock bands that ever rocked. Deserved far more commercial accolade than they received, still I'm sure they have made a good living from the business and are happy. Magnum, you are effin the best and your contribution to rock will go down as one of the best.. Keep doing what you are doing cos you are just amazing....
Of course theyre underated, teens dont like history. I bet not one of my 30 something friends know wht the maginot line actually was. (defensive line of bunkers and guns the french set up). Basically tho songs like this give u a feel for world war 1. A not to the americans who learn it was from 1917 - 1918, no that was when u joined in at the lat minute. The war was heavily fought 1914-1918. the Somme (worst battle in history) was 1916. Basically the americans shrugged off the fist world war.
@Kaldhore The Maginot Line was constructed After World War 1. This song is therefore about World War 2, in which, incidentally, the Germans simply outflanked The Maginot fortifications.
@kirstenthegoth Yes I know that, never said different. The French wanted the allied forces to let the germans advance to the maginot line, while the British wanted to move forward and meet them. Cant blame the french for wanting a secure defense but ultimately it made no difference.
@kirstenthegoth but actually the lack of immediate evidence of which war (apart from a mention of the maginot line) (we'll be home by christmas is a typical peotic line from many 1st world war writers) you could say the writers of the song were either just writing about war or not versed in the history. You decide.
@Kaldhore Glad to see you and old KIRSTENTHEGOTH are enjoying being inspired into a fantastic tangent (which, incidentally is totally relevant, I know). Just goes to show what masterpieces like this invoke in people. A great track in my humble opinion. By the way, I am now officially 'too old to die young'! But never to big to cry! All the best you guys wherever you are from Terry(N Ireland)
My favourite on Wings Of Heaven together with Pray For The Day and Days Of No Trust. Great anti-war song. And tell Tony Clarkin that he looked with beard and long hair much better than today with shaved skinhead.
Hi, I used to play bass for a band called Walk The Wire and we played support to Magnum on some dates in the UK when they were touring the Rock Art album. What a great band those guys are, very friendly, helpful and courteous to us. Great days indeed! If you like this song why not check out WTW`s song `Crossfire`.......enjoy!
I listened to this while watching old world war 1 footage of fighting in the trenches of the somme and flanders, you could not get a better song to fit the times. Magnum summed it up perfect.
@sarven10 They didn't get rid of them. Tony Clarkin had enough of Magnum in the mid-nineties, he was burned out so they split after a farewell tour in 1996. In 2001-2002, they got back together and released Breath Of Life. Wally quit music after the split and now runs a bed & breakfast in Spain, so he did not rejoin and Mickey couldn't join for a number of reasons, among them being in another band at the time. Hope this helped :)
Just found this collection of videos - thanks for posting - I was at this gig and the day before/after(?) - great time had by all. Very under-rated group, brilliant songwriter.
@z750andy Have to agree mate... saw them in Northern Ireland outdoors on the shores of Lough Neagh in Summer of 88 ( 2 more times in later years) FANTASTIC SONG FANTASTIC BAND.
these guys know how to pen a good tune, what i wanna know is why they never hit the big time, i hate seeing good bands not getting the props they desreve, whilst the public are force fed the shit the likes of x factor has to offer!
Yes they are. In fact they play in my Hometown (Karlsruhe,Germany) on the 08of October as part of their this year Germany Tour.. Naturally i already have the tickets for it. Take a look on their Homepage, there you find the Tourdates from them. Magnum, they are the best.
They are still going. From this line-up, keyboardist Mark Stanway, singer Bob Catley (duh) and guitarist/mastermind/genius songwriter Tony Clarkin remains.
I saw them in Stockholm last week, it was amazing! This song was the encore!!!!
I met Micky Barker the other week. He's a top bloke! He now runs a music studio in Birmingham UK. I recorded there. Didn't realise just how big Magnum were/are.
Watching Mick in action here is great. He's such a chilled out friendly dude! He must have been knackered doing this track though!
Isn't that on of the greatest songs ever? Must've heard this one a thousand times minimum. I love Bob's voice, i wish i could sing like him. Then again, i wish i could sing at all...
Magnum are simply awesome and bristle with talent. It's a tragedy that these guys don't get the recognition they truly deserve. This is such a bloody great song.
Wonderful. Saw Magnum at Glasgow Barrowlands on the Wings of Heaven tour (Bob Cately wore that same outfit). Brings back the memories. Kingdom of Madness!!
The atmosphere of this song is tremendous...

I'm very suprised they wernt chart toppers during these years. The same must be said for icehouse and other 80's bands.
Maybe because the music in the 80's was so good it was hard for every band to hit the big time.
